Discothon 2017

After last year’s hugely successful Discothon, we and musicALL team thought we’d do it all over again!

This years even will take place throughout the day on Wednesday 29th March. Pupils who been attending Glasgow Music Studio will be performing their DJ sets throughout the day.

Pupils and staff should get into the disco spirit by dressing up for the day. In 2016, we saw everything from ravers to John Travolta wannabes.

Just like last year the event will be sponsored, sheets have been sent home with pupils so they can help us raise some money for the school.

A Celebration of the Senses

‘A Celebration of the Senses’ was aimed to give our guests the opportunity to experience some of the difficulties faced by those with a sensory impairment, while participating in some of the activities that our pupils experience every day such as massage therapy, rebound therapy, music therapy and mobility training.

It was a great success. Lots of fun had by all with amazing feedback and a heightened awareness of the challenges our young people amaze us daily by overcoming. Well done to our head girl Martha and head boy Paul and of course our VIP Aaron. Thanks to all who helped with this fabulous night.

Don’t forget to look out for the Evening Times who will be printing a story about us on Monday or Tuesday and the BBC  filming of their current affairs programme Timeline, due to be screened Thursday (16th) on BBC 2 at 7:30pm.

Hazelwood in the press

It’s been a busy week in the school with our Celebration of the Senses event getting mentioned, shared and retweeted every day! The BBC were in filming for their current affairs programme Timeline, due to be screened  Thursday (16th) on BBC 2 at 7:30pm, and the Evening Times will be printing a story about us on Monday or Tuesday.
Well done to all of the pupils who helped out and who kept their diva moments to a minimum in front of all the cameras.

Fundraising

We host several fundraising events throughout the year including school fairs and quiz nights.

If you would like to assist us in our fundraising then please do not hesitate in contacting the school.

Our recent quiz night on 17th May 2019 raised just under £200! A huge thank you to the staff, parents and friends of the school who came along. Quizmas will be returning in December 2019!

Our next big event is on Saturday 22nd June between 11-1. Our Summer Fair will have fun for all the family including bouncy castles, games, tombolas and our Big Raffle. All are welcome to this event.

Objects of Reference and Signifiers

Objects of Reference and Signifiers

An object of reference (OOR) is a tactile, three dimensional item which through consistent use becomes a relevant point of reference for a specific activity, place or person. For example, showing a spoon to a child with CLN and a VI, and then following that up with the introduction of a meal can, if delivered consistently, allow that child to anticipate that they are about to be fed. That reassurance, that knowledge of what is happening around about you and even to you, is invaluable to a child with significant difficulties. OOR can become extremely useful in order to provide pupils with a predictable, safe structure to their day as well as promoting a level of independence.

As with OOR, signifiers can be a useful tool in terms of communicating with a child who has a VI and CLN. Our current practice provides the children and young people with daily signifiers – there is a sound, a smell, a touch and a colour to signify each day of the week. For example, pupils are presented with some pop music during Monday morning group times, as well as a piece of yellow felt which has had lemon essence sprinkled on it. Jazz music, and green scourer pads with mint essence are presented to the pupils on Tuesdays.

Consistent delivery of these signifiers will help our pupils to develop an awareness of routines and therefore security about an aspect of their lives.
