In November, Primary 1 have been focusing on learning sounds through Jolly Phonics. So far we have explored the sounds; s, a, t, p, i, n, c, k, e, h, r and m.
In writing we have been describing characters from fairy tales using our description bubble, with focus on colour, size and number to enhance our descriptions.
In reading we have been creating story maps for well-known fairy tales such as Jack and the Beanstalk and Goldilocks and the three bears. These have helped us to think about what happens next in each story and the order of events.
In Numeracy, Primary 1 have been focusing on addition and subtraction using a range of concrete materials to support the children in their learning. We have been working with tens frames and part-part-whole models and are beginning to explore how to use a number line to solves sums.
In Mathematics we have been learning about measure and using non-standard units to explore length and weight. Through fairy tales we have investigated the length of familiar objects and practised ordering them.
Primary 1 have been learning about the World of Work through visits from people on our community. The children met an engineer and had the opportunity to ask and answer questions about his job. We also welcomed a parent who works in nutrition and pharmacy. The children explored different foods, learned about her role and asked thoughtful questions about her job.
These visits helped children think about the future and they enjoyed discussing what jobs they might like to have when they are older.
