Literary and Cultural Celebrations for December<\/strong><\/p>\n

UK Disability History Month<\/a> (14th<\/sup> Nov \u2013 20th<\/sup> Dec): UK Disability History Month (UKDHM) is an annual event creating a platform to focus on the history of disables people\u2019s struggle for equality and human rights.\u00a0It is a chance to discuss the history of disabled people, the positive contributions disabled people have made, and a chance to find out how we as a society can be more inclusive.<\/p>\n

Bhodi Day<\/a> (8th<\/sup> December): Bodhi Day\u00a0is the\u00a0Buddhist holiday\u00a0that commemorates the day that\u00a0Gautama Buddha\u00a0(Shakyamuni) is said to have attained\u00a0enlightenment.<\/p>\n

World Soil Day<\/a> (5th<\/sup> December): World Soil Day (WSD) is held annually as a means to focus attention on the importance of healthy soil and to advocate for the sustainable management of soil resources.<\/p>\n

Human Rights Day<\/a> (10th<\/sup> December): Human Rights Day commemorates the anniversary of one of the world’s most groundbreaking global pledges: the\u00a0Universal Declaration of Human Rights\u00a0(UDHR). This\u00a0landmark document enshrines the inalienable rights that everyone is entitled to as a human being – regardless of race, colour, religion, sex, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status.<\/p>\n

International Animal Rights Day<\/a> (10th<\/sup> December): International Animal Rights Day is an annual event honouring animals as sentient beings who deserve the same protections as people. This global observance is marked by demonstrations that expose animal exploitation, mourn the animal victims of human tyranny and rally support for universal animal welfare.<\/p>\n

International Migrants Day<\/a> (18th<\/sup> December): International Migrants Day gives us a special opportunity to shine a spotlight on the invaluable contributions of millions of migrants around the world. It’s also a day for us to highlight the increasingly complex environment in which migration occurs.<\/p>\n

Yule<\/a> (December 21st<\/sup>): Yule\u00a0is a winter festival historically observed by the\u00a0Germanic peoples. In present times adherents of some\u00a0new religious movements\u00a0(such as\u00a0Modern Germanic paganism) celebrate Yule independently of the Christian festival.<\/p>\n

Christmas<\/a> (25th<\/sup> December): Christmas\u00a0is an annual festival commemorating\u00a0the birth\u00a0of\u00a0Jesus Christ, as a\u00a0religious\u00a0and\u00a0cultural\u00a0celebration among billions of people\u00a0around the world.<\/p>\n

Hanukkah<\/a> (25th<\/sup> December \u2013 2nd<\/sup> January): Hanukkah is a\u00a0Jewish festival\u00a0commemorating the recovery of\u00a0Jerusalem\u00a0and subsequent rededication of the\u00a0Second Temple\u00a0at the beginning of the\u00a0Maccabean Revolt\u00a0against the\u00a0Seleucid Empire\u00a0in the 2nd century BCE.<\/p>\n

Kwanzaa<\/a> (December 26th<\/sup> \u2013 January 1st<\/sup>): Kwanzaa\u00a0is an annual celebration of\u00a0African-American culture\u00a0from December 26 to January 1, culminating in a communal feast called\u00a0Karamu<\/em>, usually on the sixth day.<\/p>\n

New Years Eve<\/a>\/Hogmanay<\/a> (31st<\/sup> December): In the\u00a0Gregorian calendar,\u00a0New Year’s Eve\u00a0refers to the evening, or commonly the entire day, of the last day of the year also known as\u00a0Old Year’s Day.\u00a0Hogmanay\u00a0is the\u00a0Scots\u00a0word for the last day of the old year and is synonymous with the celebration of the\u00a0New Year\u00a0in the Scottish manner.<\/p>\n
