Bookweek @ St Rochs

Book Week Scotland 2024

Book Week is an annual celebration of books and reading that takes place every November across Scotland. Book Week Scotland 2024 took place on 18–24 November- here’s how we celebrated in St Roch’s School Library.

Book Hunting

Our first years took part in a book scavenger hunt! First everyone played a quick Blooket quiz to refresh our learning about how the library is organised. Then we split into teams and got mission cards. The challenge was to find the books on your mission card and be the quickest to complete all 14. All the teams were fantastic, they all finished the challenge and we were very impressed by how speedy some were!

How to choose a book

We held a session on book choosing for second and third year classes. Sometimes pupils struggle to find the ‘right’ book for them when they visit the library and it can be a bit stressful. We want to make sure that everyone can leave the library with something they’ll enjoy for their class personal reading time.

For this session, pupils learned some simple strategies to help with choosing a book. Then we split into groups to complete a’ reading personality’ quiz which helped pupils to narrow down a couple of genres/library sections that might suit them.  It was a good bit of fun which gave pupils some helpful pointers (some people were definitely surprised by their ‘personality’ result!). Want to find your reading personality? The quiz is available here as part of Scottish Book Trust’s Reading Schools resources .

Guiding Lights

Lastly, library volunteers lead by chief display planner Iman, did a great job on a lovely Book Week Display.

This year’s theme is hope and the volunteers chose to focus their display on  Guiding Lights – a celebration of characters who give us strength, guidance and inspire us to keep us going. Volunteers made some great choices of books, including The sad ghost club by Lize Meddings, Punching the air by Ibi Zoboi & Yusef Salaam, and When stars are scattered by Victoria Jamieson & Omar Mohamed.

Well done volunteers! And a big thank you for all your help with the activities this week.

Lastly every year, people accross the country share stories as part of the ‘Scotland’s Stories’ campaign. Scottish Book trust include a handful of favourites in a free book for Book Week Scotland. You can order a free copy of this year’s collection ‘Hope’ now from the SBT website.

St Mungo’s library (finally) re-opened!

Good news! The school library has now reopened and is once again accessible to our pupils after a major refurbishment.

At lunchtime, pupils have the chance to engage in various activities like reading/ borrowing books, playing board games, doing origami, doodling or become a library helpers. These activities not only promote creativity but also contribute to the development of memory, logic, reasoning skills, and expand knowledge.

In our school library, friendships are formed, ideas are shared, and the overall school community thrives.

Additionally, your children have the opportunity to participate in a variety of library clubs, allowing them to explore different interests and engage in enriching activities.

On Tuesdays, the lunchtime activities at school are devoted to an interesting and beneficial session called “Storytelling for Wellbeing”. During this time, pupils engage in the creative process of crafting stories using various mediums like story cubes, music, and images. These stimulating tools help inspire their imaginations and enhance their storytelling skills while promoting overall well-being.

Wednesday after school is the perfect time for young manga/anime enthusiasts to gather and indulge in their shared passion. These clubs are highly sought-after and offer exciting activities like manga quizzes that challenge students’ knowledge. Apart from the quizzes, these clubs also provide an opportunity to explore and immerse themselves in Japanese culture, allowing them to deepen their understanding and appreciation of this unique art form.

Every Thursday, the “Worldwide Diversity Club” organises a lunch exclusively for its members. During this time, members have the opportunity to share and celebrate cultural diversity through presentations, crafts, and engaging exchanges. It is an inclusive and enriching experience that allows individuals from different backgrounds to come together and appreciate various cultures.

Finally, after school on Fridays, many students engage in the exciting world of role- playing games. These games allow them to step into the shoes of adventurers, encountering fictional situations where they must make decisions and face the consequences. It’s a fun and creative way for pupils to immerse themselves in storytelling and problem-solving.

The library is absolutely bursting with life once again!

World book day(s)! at St Mungo’s library

Why celebrating “world book” for a day when we can do it for an entire WEEK!

From the 28th of February till the 4th of March, the St Mungo’s library had a full program of book festivities to give the chance to every pupils in the school to celebrate.

The daily S1 library visits enjoyed a very special scavenger hunt made for the occasion. Every participants received a book token to get a free book from their favourite bookshop in town.

At lunch, the library helpers worked hard to display all the free books we received for the occasion and made sure to spread the love of reading among the school.

What will be book festivities without any competitions?!

We had two exciting competitions running that week:

The book cover competition designed by some of our Higher and S3 Elective young people in partnership with the Art department.

Here are the three winners:

The bookface competition with very creative S3 pupils.

Here are some fantastic entries:

And finally at lunch, the library “display committee” had the responsibility to count the votes for the Scottish Teen Book prize.

They really embraced the task!

World book day(s!) was a huge success at St Mungo’s with more than 500 tokens given away to actual and potential readers!
