Tips for Reading
- You can read to your child, they can read to you, or you can take turns reading a page or paragraph each
- Remember, even if your child can read a book for themselves, they might still enjoy being read to
- Before your open the book, look at the front and back covers together. Ask your child about what they see and what they think the story might be about
- Open the book and look through the pictures first, before you even read. Talk about what you think could be happening in the story
- When you are reading the book, make sure you read all of the words on the page, including the words in the pictures, speech bubbles, words, boxes or on signs. Point these out as you read.
- Ask questions while you are reading; ask your child why they think something is happening in the story or how they feel about the story
- Can you each try to retell the story as quickly as possible? How about in 20 words or less? It’s okay to miss out bits of the story that you don’t think are very important, but make sure you include the main parts (Use question words to help you. Who? What? Where? When? Why? How?)
- Design a new front cover for the book. What picture would you pick?
- Did anything in the book remind you of another book, film, TV show, or something about your own life? Talk about how they are similar or different
- Rewrite the ending to the story. Change the setting (where the story takes places) or change one of the characters. Retell the story in a different way! E.g. could you tell it as if it happened on the moon or in the jungle? What about if the story was from the point of view of one or the other characters?
