The Knight Who Said “No!”– Maths and Numeracy ideas

Shape Hunt

Look at the first two pages in the book. How many windows are there in Ned’s castle? Are they all the same shape? How many shapes can you find? Design and draw your own window. Will it be one shape or will it be made up of lots of other shapes?

Even and Odd Number Dice

Take out your yellow dice and green dice. Your yellow number dice has even numbers and your green number dice has odd numbers.

  • Ask a family member or friend to roll one of the dice and read out the number (no peeking!) Can you identify if it is odd or even?

  • Choose one of the dice to roll. If you roll the odd dice and roll a 7, go to page 7 in the book. (Remember to count the pages as there are no numbers on the pages!) When you arrive at the correct page, look for as many things to count (e.g. windows, dragons etc). How many of each can you count? Can you find any shapes or patterns on that page?

Outdoor Shape Hunt

Ned’s home is a castle. With an adult, go for a walk around your neighbourhood and look at all of the different houses and buildings. What shapes can you see in each of these? Are they different sizes? Are they different colours? What is your favourite and why? Have you seen these shapes before?
