{"id":375,"date":"2022-11-28T09:02:05","date_gmt":"2022-11-28T09:02:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/gc\/ealinsw\/?page_id=375"},"modified":"2022-12-01T15:45:36","modified_gmt":"2022-12-01T15:45:36","slug":"mental-health","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/gc\/ealinsw\/useful-websites\/mental-health\/","title":{"rendered":"Mental Health"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"s71\"><span class=\"s73\">Asylum seekers and refugees face unique and complex challenges related to their mental health and they are often at <\/span><span class=\"s74\">greater risk of developing a mental health problem.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s73\">The increased vulnerability to mental health problems that refugees and asylum seekers face is linked to <\/span><span class=\"s74\">pre-migration experiences<\/span><span class=\"s73\"> (such as war trauma) and <\/span><span class=\"s74\">post-migration experiences<\/span><span class=\"s73\"> (such as separation from family, difficulties with asylum procedures, and poor housing) .\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s73\">Asylum seekers are 5 times more likely to have mental health needs than the general population. However, data shows that they are <\/span><span class=\"s74\">less likely to receive support <\/span><span class=\"s73\">than the general population. (<\/span><span class=\"s73\">Source: Mental Health Foundation)<strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalhealth.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mental Health<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"s1\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"s1\">\n<p class=\"s2\"><span class=\"s10\"><strong>Mental Health Foundation<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s14\" style=\"font-size: 1rem\">work towards\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s15\" style=\"font-size: 1rem\">good mental health for all<\/span><span class=\"s14\" style=\"font-size: 1rem\">, focusing on\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s15\" style=\"font-size: 1rem\">prevention.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s14\" style=\"font-size: 1rem\">Some communities are at\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s15\" style=\"font-size: 1rem\">higher risk of mental health\u00a0problems<\/span><span class=\"s14\" style=\"font-size: 1rem\">\u00a0due to the social, economic, and environmental\u00a0circumstances they find themselves in, such as refugees\u00a0and asylum seekers<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"s1\">\n<p class=\"s16\"><span class=\"s14\"><strong>&#8220;Voices and Visibility&#8221;<\/strong> is a new <b>MHF<\/b> project which\u00a0aims to\u00a0gain insight into the\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s15\">barriers to civic participation by\u00a0refugees and asylum seekers.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s14\">The World Health Organisation has identified\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s15\">community\u00a0empowerment<\/span><span class=\"s14\">\u00a0as the first track to promote health and\u00a0wellbeing, being \u2018the process of enabling communities to\u00a0increase control over their lives\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s18\"><span class=\"s14\">Since 2017, <b>MHF<\/b> has been working with refugees and asylum seekers to support their mental health using\u00a0a range of approaches.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s14\">At the heart of these projects has been the <\/span><span class=\"s15\">\u2018voices\u2019 of refugee and asylum-seeking communities.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s14\">The Voices and Visibility report came out in March 2022 and gives<\/span><span class=\"s15\"> recommendations on how refugee communities can actively participate on civic forums<\/span><span class=\"s14\"> and other decision-making structures, such as Parent Councils.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s14\">This research study took a <\/span><span class=\"s15\">participatory research approach<\/span><span class=\"s14\">, so it is shaped by the voices of refugees and asylum seekers.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"s1\">\n<p class=\"s12\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-376 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/gc\/public\/ealinsw\/uploads\/sites\/11318\/2022\/11\/22131424\/6E0A3574-0B8E-4F98-B0E0-EB4726BAB45F-300x161.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"161\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/gc\/public\/ealinsw\/uploads\/sites\/11318\/2022\/11\/22131424\/6E0A3574-0B8E-4F98-B0E0-EB4726BAB45F-300x161.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/gc\/public\/ealinsw\/uploads\/sites\/11318\/2022\/11\/22131424\/6E0A3574-0B8E-4F98-B0E0-EB4726BAB45F-1024x549.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/gc\/public\/ealinsw\/uploads\/sites\/11318\/2022\/11\/22131424\/6E0A3574-0B8E-4F98-B0E0-EB4726BAB45F-768x411.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/gc\/public\/ealinsw\/uploads\/sites\/11318\/2022\/11\/22131424\/6E0A3574-0B8E-4F98-B0E0-EB4726BAB45F-624x334.jpeg 624w, https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/gc\/public\/ealinsw\/uploads\/sites\/11318\/2022\/11\/22131424\/6E0A3574-0B8E-4F98-B0E0-EB4726BAB45F.jpeg 1260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Mental Health signposts and success stories<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p>Scotland Our New Home features a series of inspirational stories by young refugees from the New Young Peers Scotland group (hosted by YPeople Charity) who wanted to make a film to support other new young arrivals in the process of making home in Scotland.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@scotlandournewhome7087\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Scotland Our New Home<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unhcr.org\/uk\/59d346de4.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Teaching Refugee Children UNHRC<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.good-thinking.uk\/coping-trauma-better-mental-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Coping with TRAUMA &#8211;
