{"id":1028,"date":"2022-11-16T13:20:59","date_gmt":"2022-11-16T13:20:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/gc\/dhstest\/?page_id=1028"},"modified":"2024-05-28T12:32:48","modified_gmt":"2024-05-28T11:32:48","slug":"home-economics","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/gc\/drumchapel\/home-economics\/","title":{"rendered":"Home Economics"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong><u>Courses<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Home Economics department offers a variety of learning experiences to S1-6 pupils.\u00a0 The department prides itself on having high aspirations and positive relationships with our young people, which helps lead to positive levels of attainment for our pupils.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>BGE \u2013 S1-3<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>S1<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In S1, our pupils will enjoy the opportunity to learn about the below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Basic hygiene, safety and kitchen routines<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How to safely use kitchen equipment, such as a cooker<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How to accurately weigh and measure ingredients<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How to understand information on food labels<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Basic knife skills and vegetable preparation techniques<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How to achieve a balanced diet using the Eat-well guide<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Specialised diets and foods from other cultures<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How to accurately cost a recipe<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>S2<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In S2, our pupils will enjoy the opportunity to learn about the below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Cooking with healthy ingredients<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Malnutrition and balanced diets<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The relationship between current dietary advice and common diseases<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How to reduce levels of fat, sugar and salt in their diet<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Safe and proper use of gas and electrical kitchen equipment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Specialised diets and foods from other cultures<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>S3<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In S3, our pupils will enjoy the opportunity to learn about the below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Cooking with high risk ingredients<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Advancing skills and techniques in the kitchen<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Food spoilage, food poisoning and its prevention<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Contamination hazards and hazard analysis<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Storage and preparation of high-risk ingredients<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Food pests and control<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Food safety legislation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>S4-6<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We currently offer Practical Cookery at National 3, 4 and 5 level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Possible Career Routes<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Baker<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Chef<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Home Economics Teacher<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Food Product Development<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Food Journalist<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hotel Management&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Events planner<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Executive chef<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Marketing\/Sales\/Media<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Catering Manager&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hotel Operational Manager<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Human Resource Management<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Waiter\/Waitress<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Housekeeping\/Concierge<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Clubs<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sewing Club also takes place on a Tuesday during lunch.&nbsp; The Faculty also makes itself available as a safe space for our young people to enjoy their interval and lunch every day of the week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our department understands that pupil attendance at supported study is a key part in raising attainment for our young people.&nbsp; Supported study will be on offer throughout the year and these sessions will be communicated with pupils and shared via the school X page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can keep up to date with our department on our X feed @DHSBizEdandHE.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Visits to local businesses as well as in-school visits from businesses take place in order to enhance pupils\u2019 learning experiences.&nbsp;
