  1. The Scottish text is part of Paper 2 in the exam and is basically a textual analysis of a text you have studied in class and is worth 20% of the overall course.

You need to remember that while studying this there are clear links between the development of skills for close reading (understanding, anlalysis and evaluation) and also for your creative writing. As I keep telling you, all the skills you are learning in English are interlinked.

  2. If you were in class before the holidays then you should’ve read the novel by now, if not, don’t worry as you will have time when you get back to class.

In the exam an extract from the novel will be used for you to analyse, the only problem is that we don’t know where in the novel the extract will come from so you need to ensure that you know the text really well. Pay particular notice of the key scenes such as the thunder storm, the deer hunt and, of course, Callum’s death at the end.

The format for both Nat.5 and Higher are very similar, both papers are worth 20 marks. You will be asked some questions on the extract and then the final question asks you to compare the extract in some way to the whole novel. For Nat. 5 this question is worth 8 marks and for Higher it is worth 10 marks. We will look in detail as to go about answering these once we have discussed the text in detail.

  3. I have attached all of your work on TCG at the top of the page. Well done to all of those who presented your work today – you have all passed the Talk outcome for Higher – yippee!
