The Gingerbread Man

Through our our work on Fairytales the boys and girls have been developing their work on character, setting and their ability to retell a story in the correct sequence.

they enjoyed designing their own ginger red character and sequencing the story.

Baking

Alana, Charlotte, David and Jack worked with Mrs McVey to follow a recipe and make gingerbread men biscuits for all the boys and girls.

Look at their yummy biscuits!

Science

in this experiment the boys and girls were observing to see which liquid would dissolve the gingerbread man the quickest. They put gingerbread men in: milk, water, oil and vinegar.  They started the stopwatch and kept coming back to see the change in state. Mason was mesmerised by how quickly the one in the milk started to crumble and that the one in the oil wasn’t really changing.

News

The boys and girls couldn’t wait to share their news this week…look at their wonderful pictures and some children even had a go at copying and finishing the sentence.

Maths

We are learning all about time in school just now.  The children can already successfully say and order the days of the week and identify specific tasks that they do on different days of the week.  Yesterday the children were learning about the importance of telling the time and where they would see time in the world around them.  They worked together in groups to create collages of objects that would show time in both analogue and digital format.

Shape

The children are revisiting their work on shape – 2d and 3d shape.

Adding

In Primary 1 we are using cube and numerlines to add.  We even apply our knowledge of adding to games on the computer.

Science

This term we are learning about the sun, moon, stars and planets.  Yesterday we learning all about the sun.

‘The sun is our neatest star’ – Macy

‘The sun is a ball of gas’ – Emma

‘We need sun to make the plants grow and stay alive’ – Shawn

Table lamp designs by Primary 3

Primary 3 have been learning about electricity in science/STEM. They have been learning to connect up a circuit using the correct components and then used these skills to design a table lamp that lights up! Throughout this task the children developed problem solving and teamwork skills in order to assemble a lamp that works. Have a look at Primary 3 in action designing, creating and making their own lamps.

P7’s day out at Hillpark

Last week P7 went to Hillpark for a STEM day.

First of all we made rockets to launch later that day. We made them out of card and sticky tape. Next we had our break and it was delicious.

Then we went to maths and learned how to find the average speed of our rocket. After that we went to science to launch our rockets outside to see how far they went.

After we launched our rockets we went for lunch. It was very tasty.

After lunch we tried to recreate our rockets in ICT. They were amazing. Here are some pictures from the day.

Awesome Earthquakes

At the end of last term as part of our learning in STEM, P7 designed and built earthquake proof buildings and tested them! First we had to build them. we used cocktail sticks and marshmallows.

Here are some of our buildings.

Next we had to test them. We used a tray of jelly because it wobbled like an earthquake! We timed each of our buildings to see how long it stood for.

Almost all of our buildings survived the earthquake!! Although a few did collapse!

We really enjoyed learning all about earthquakes and how buildings are built to survive them. It was great fun making our own buildings and testing them!!

P3 STEM in Action

Primary 3 welcome you to their blog page.  We hope you enjoy our first post.  Please leave us a comment!

This term Primary 3 have been developing their science and STEM skills through a range of activities linked to our topic ‘The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch.

The children weaved their own baskets and designed a pulley system just like in the story. have a look at our creations!

Mrs Ali posted a video of how we were able to design a pulley system to get the basket with yummy food across to Mr Grinling!
