The Gingerbread Man

Through our our work on Fairytales the boys and girls have been developing their work on character, setting and their ability to retell a story in the correct sequence.

they enjoyed designing their own ginger red character and sequencing the story.

Baking

Alana, Charlotte, David and Jack worked with Mrs McVey to follow a recipe and make gingerbread men biscuits for all the boys and girls.

Look at their yummy biscuits!

Science

in this experiment the boys and girls were observing to see which liquid would dissolve the gingerbread man the quickest. They put gingerbread men in: milk, water, oil and vinegar.  They started the stopwatch and kept coming back to see the change in state. Mason was mesmerised by how quickly the one in the milk started to crumble and that the one in the oil wasn’t really changing.

Primary 1

Blending Mats

We enjoy using the blending mats to make new words and words we already know!

‘i used the mat to make my name’ – Max

‘j-e-t’, it’s like a small fast plane – Daniel

3D shapes

we take our learning outdoors as often as we can. The boys and girls applied their knowledge of 3D shapes to finding examples of them in our playground! Ava found lots of cylinders.

Addition

we use lots of objects to investigate addition – cubes, bears, counters.  Max really impressed with using a number line to work out the answers to his sums.

J

The boys and girls enjoyed exploring the jelly during literacy time. They were challenged to find the letters in the jelly to make ‘j’ words.

3d shape

Last week we were learning about 3D shape. The children were sorting the 3D shapes – all different colours and sizes.

in the construction area children were using the big blocks to create their own constructions.

Layla noticed that the unifix cubes were a cube shape and investigated what she could build with them.

Time for an update…P1

Sorry we have been so quiet recently – a lot has been happening over the last few weeks: we had visitors from Hillpark Secondary – asking us about our favourite toys and using that information to make toys for us.

2d shape

The boys and girls have been learning to name and identify 2d shapes.  They enjoyed copying shape pictures and using marshmallows and cocktail sticks to mKe their own 2d shapes – helping to understand the terms ‘corners’ and ‘sides’.

Road Safety Week

During road safety week the boys and girls learned where and how to cross the road safely.

Class Dojo

Lots of points being earned through our ‘Class Dojo’. Look at some of the children who have reached 50 points so far and received a certificate Home! Well done 😀

Maths & Literacy

STEM

During our science activities we have been learning about forces. This week we were making our own boats and will be using them to investigate floating and sinking but also finding different ways to make the boat move across the water.

Primary 1 – Children In Need and Outdoor Learning

Today was an extra special day – we were raising money for children in need. The boys and girls came dressed in spots and took part in lots of lovely spot-tacular activities during the day.  We finished our day by sharing what we had learned about Children In Need and what happens to the money we donated.  The children enjoyed a teddy bears picnic.

Outdoor Learning

We have been engaging in a lot of outdoor learning opportunities and today the children were learning about where different animals live.  They were learning that some animals sleep during the day and others sleep at night and were introduced to the words – nocturnal and habitat.  The children enjoyed going outside to collect sticks, stones and leaves so that they can have a go at creating some habitats next week.

Primary 1

Welcome to our Blog update this week, we hope you enjoy it 🙂

ICT

In ICT this week the children were much more confident at using their mouse to point and click.  With a partner they successfully opened up the internet page and selected a programme from the ‘favourites’ section.

STEM

In STEM this week we were learning all about different forces.  The children were becoming familiar with and confident with the words – push and pull and how to use them in the correct context.  They had great fun exploring how toys moved and how we use the forces of ‘push’ and ‘pull’ when playing games – tug of war, climbing the wall, basket ball and playing with a ball.

Maths

We started the week off by having a number hunt outside and the boys and girls were great number detectives and managed to hunt out the numbers 1-10 and they used their clipboard to record the numbers they found.

This week we were learning to add.  We explored the language of addition, familiarised ourselves with the symbols and came to the understanding that when we add we are creating a bigger number.  The children did this by counting to see how many objects there were ‘altogether’.

Language

This week the children were introduced to some words – some words we can sound out and some are tricky and we just need to try and learn them.

The Enchanted Forest

The boys and girls used the talking tub to decide what they wanted to learn about for their new topic – ‘The Enchanted Forest’.

The picked an item out of the box that interested them and told us what they knew already and what they wanted to learn about next.

Another busy week…

Literacy

This week the children were developing their ability to draw a detailed picture to match a short story.  If they wanted to they could ‘have a go’ at copying the sentence too. Lots of detailed pictures and some wonderful letter formation!

Nathim and Poppy were letter detectives and used the magnifying glasses to search for some of their initial sounds in the books.

It’s been another busy week in Primary 1.  We went to the ICT suite for the first time this week.  We were learning to name the different parts of the computer and why it is important to have a password.

The children had to use the mouse to point and click in order to navigate their way around the Cbeebies site.

Outdoor Learning – We’re going on a Bear Hunt

Mrs McVey and the boys and girls enjoyed getting outdoors and re-enacting the famous story ‘We’re going on a Bear Hunt’.  They used different parts of the playground and their imagination to bring the story to life – the sand pit was the mud, the playground was the river, the bamboo was the forest and the bubbles were the snow. Mason was our bear – I’m so glad we found him 🙂 what a wonderful afternoon we had!

Welcome to Primary 1

Welcome to Primary 1

This is the first blog post from Primary 1 this session.  We have been very busy settling into the rules and routines of school that we haven’t uploaded any pictures or posts on to our blog page.

We have selected a few pictures to upload to show our journey through Term 1.

Learning Through Play

The children enjoyed learning to write their names and using mirrors to draw themselves.

Synthetic Phonics

This year we are discussing with the children where the sound is made in our mouth when we learn a new letter and its sound.  We have used jam torches and mirrors to help see where the sound is made in our mouth.

We will post updates of our journey through Primary 1 on our Blog page so keep your eyes peeled 🙂

Please leave some comments for us to read.
