The Gingerbread Man

Through our our work on Fairytales the boys and girls have been developing their work on character, setting and their ability to retell a story in the correct sequence.

they enjoyed designing their own ginger red character and sequencing the story.

Baking

Alana, Charlotte, David and Jack worked with Mrs McVey to follow a recipe and make gingerbread men biscuits for all the boys and girls.

Look at their yummy biscuits!

Science

in this experiment the boys and girls were observing to see which liquid would dissolve the gingerbread man the quickest. They put gingerbread men in: milk, water, oil and vinegar.  They started the stopwatch and kept coming back to see the change in state. Mason was mesmerised by how quickly the one in the milk started to crumble and that the one in the oil wasn’t really changing.

Primary 1

Jack and the Beanstalk

This term Primary 1 have been developing their literacy, numeracy, technology and play skills through Fairytales.

Last week we were reading Jack and the Beanstalk and engaged in lots of different activities – including one that involved eating.

The boys and girls were bean tasting – banked beans, green beans, kidney beans, broad beans and lastly YUMMY jelly beans 😀. The children were tasked with trying different types of beans and explaining what they tasted like and if they liked them or not. They were then rewarded with some jelly beans!!

A lot of children enjoyed the beans and even came back for a second visit – Amy, Thomas and Alana really enjoyed tasting the different beans.  Some children weren’t keen on the taste and texture of the beans.

After lunch we came back to find lots of giants feet had been left for us.  We used the Giants feet to measure the distances to different objects in our classroom.  The children worked in groups to lay out the Giants feet and counting them.

Time

This term we are investigating time so we set up a time area in our classroom.

Ict

we are working very hard at developing our ICT skills. The boys and girls can successfully log on to a computer, open Microsoft word, type their name and manipulate the size, colour and font of the text.

Sometimes we have worries and fears and together we help each other out. We played at dentists to help one wee girl overcome her fear of the dentist. we spoke about what happens when we go to the dentist and the role of the dentist then we had a go at being the dentist or patient.

Burnbrae and Cleeves celebrate Burns Day

The children from Burnbrae Nursery and the boys and girls from Primary 1 joined up to showcase their learning about Robert Burns.

The boys and girls in Primary 1 worked with Mrs McVey to make shortbread – they measured the ingredients and talked about the process.  With help from Mrs McVey they followed a recipe.

They made their own Scotland flag bunting and their own tartan kilts and used them as decorations for the hall.

We sang scottish songs and performed a Scottish dance.  Everyone had a lovely afternoon.

Primary 1

Blending Mats

We enjoy using the blending mats to make new words and words we already know!

‘i used the mat to make my name’ – Max

‘j-e-t’, it’s like a small fast plane – Daniel

3D shapes

we take our learning outdoors as often as we can. The boys and girls applied their knowledge of 3D shapes to finding examples of them in our playground! Ava found lots of cylinders.

Addition

we use lots of objects to investigate addition – cubes, bears, counters.  Max really impressed with using a number line to work out the answers to his sums.

J

The boys and girls enjoyed exploring the jelly during literacy time. They were challenged to find the letters in the jelly to make ‘j’ words.

Making Playdoh

The boys and girls in Primary 1 have been learning to make their own Playdoh – they were measuring the ingredients, taking turns to mix the ingredients and then were timing the mixture in the microwave!

‘We put it on scal s to see how much we needed’ – Amy

‘it cooked in the microwave’ – Daniel

‘i poured the water and colouring into the bowl and mixed it’ – Ava

3d shape

Last week we were learning about 3D shape. The children were sorting the 3D shapes – all different colours and sizes.

in the construction area children were using the big blocks to create their own constructions.

Layla noticed that the unifix cubes were a cube shape and investigated what she could build with them.

STEM

Happy New Year 🙂

Welcome back to Primary 1’s Blog – the first blog of 2018.

We may only have been back for 2 days but we are excited to share our STEM work.

Before Christmas the boys and girls made origami boats with Mrs McVey – today they were conducting an experiment to see if they would float.  They used their knowledge of forces to find out how to make the boat move without using their hands.  Once they had done that they investigated which objects would float like their boat and which would sink.

Charlotte found that the bag floated and thought that maybe there was helium in the bag – like they put in balloons to help them float in the sky!
