Work Experience Programme for Police Scotlands Greater Glasgow Division

3rd – 7th October 2016

The programme is for pupils who are interested in a career in Police Scotland and are 16 years of age and older. There will only be one place allocated per school. You will need to make a formal application for the work experience programme. The closing date for applications is Friday 29 May 2015.

Glasgow Recycling and Renewable Energy – Work Experience

13th – 17th June 2016

School pupils considering a ‘Career in Engineering’ can gain an in-depth understanding and hands on experience of the industry through a jointly supported work experience programme run in partnership with Viridor, Interserve Construction and Jacobs.

The work experience, is jam-packed full of interesting and engaging talks, site tour, presentations and exercises, including:

  • Calculating the carbon footprint of Jacobs business travel data (flights, car journeys, etc.) and energy office consumption (gas, electricity).
  • Hands-on experience of transport modelling with the Transportation team and structural modelling with the Ports and Marine team.
  • Computer modelling with the Rail team – using Clear Route software to check clearances from structures and trains passing.
  • Guided site tour of the Glasgow Recycling and Renewable Energy Centre (GRREC)
  • GRREC Engineering sessions with interactive and hands-on activities including an overview of various different engineering roles.
  • Looking at Process and Instrumentation Diagrams and identifying various systems.
  • Teambuilding exercises incorporating communication and presentation skills.

You will learn the many types of Engineering roles that are available as well as how rewarding a Career in Engineering can be.

The Hospitality team are hosting an information evening on all Full Time Hospitality courses that are delivered at City of Glasgow College.
When:   Tuesday 24th May, 4.00-7.00
Where:  Scholars Restaurant, Townhead Campus, 230 Cathedral Street.

Apprenticeships – Learn as you Earn!

The BBC is launching a new pilot local apprenticeship across BBC English Regions that offer a career pathway into Broadcast & Communication Operations. On May 8th the applications for the 2016 Broadcast Operator (BOA) Apprenticeship close. We are looking for those aged 17+ and interested in Camera/Sound Operation to work at one of our local Radio/TV stations whilst gaining a qualification to support the newsgathering, radio and current affairs content creation our local editorial teams produce each and every day.

We also have a new 4 year degree based Software Developer apprenticeship based up in Salford, North West England.

Hairdressing Apprenticeship

Pele Hair & Beauty are offering a Modern Apprenticeship in their stunning city centre salon. The training to go with this position is provided by UConcept Training Academy who are based right beside Pele in Hope Street Glasgow. It will be Level 2 with the possibility of progression to Level 3. The candidate MUST attend training one day a week. The rate of pay is £4 per hour, and the apprentice will be offered upwards of 30 hours.

Smallpeice Trust and GCHQ offer free courses to 16-17 yr olds

Summer 2016 CyberFirst Futures

The Smallpeice Trust has partnered with the GCHQ security agency to inspire, engage and enlist a generation of teenage tech wizards by creating a series of unique FREE courses across the UK.   

Taking place in the summer at six leading Universities, the four day CyberFirst Futures residential courses will offer 300 16-17 year old’s (Year 12 / S6) students the opportunity to work closely with experts from the GCHQ, The Smallpeice Trust and academia – gaining an insight into the importance of cyber security and to learn first-hand experience in defending against a cyber-attack. Students must be British nationals and have 5 GCSE’s grade C or above (must include Maths and Science)

The cyber sector has seen great investment in recent years and the UK now earns £2bn in cyber security exports.  This emerging sector is driving the need for new recruits with good Maths and STEM skills, as cyber security will become a key component for many businesses home and individuals.

Places are FREE (50 places per location) and will be allocated on a first come basis provided the criteria is met.
