Dear Parents and Carers<\/span><\/p>\n

Welcome to the new academic year! As the Bellahouston Parent Council, we wanted <\/span>to introduce ourselves to new parents and carers, and provide some information on <\/span>the work of the Parent Council, and to let us know how we can work together.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Parent Council \u2013 what we do<\/b><\/p>\n

Our priorities are to:<\/span><\/p>\n

– share views on behalf of parents and carers about the School\u2019s policies and <\/span>plans<\/span><\/p>\n

– raise particular issues and concerns on behalf of parents and carers<\/span><\/p>\n

– fundraise for school priorities<\/span><\/p>\n

– consider how we and other parents can use our skills to support the school<\/span><\/p>\n

– advocate or lobby on behalf of the school where appropriate<\/span><\/p>\n

We meet approximately once a term. All are welcome to attend the meetings. Please notify us on Bellahoustonparentcouncil@gmail.com if you plan to join a meeting, and if you <\/span>require an interpreter. We meet in person at the school, but you can also join via zoom – please contact me if you\u2019d like the zoom link.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At the meetings, we hear updates from the School on thematic policies and plans; <\/span>we hear an update from the Headteacher and there is a short opportunity to ask <\/span>questions about those updates; and we use the remaining time to take forward<\/span><\/p>\n

Parent Council planning (e.g. for events, for fundraising).<\/span><\/p>\n

Next meeting \u2013 Parent Council AGM,\u00a0 Monday 21st September 18 – 20<\/b><\/p>\n

This meeting will begin with an update from Mr Mochan, the Head Teacher, followed by questions, then the Parent Council Annual General Meeting. At this meeting, we will be looking to appoint a new Chair and a new Secretary, to enable the Parent Council to continue to meet. At the bottom of this letter you can find more information about what those roles involve, or please do just get in touch with me.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Parent Council meetings are not the same as a Parents Evening, and they are <\/span>not an opportunity to discuss issues about individual children. If <\/span>you have any questions about your child, please contact Mr Mochan, the <\/span>headteacher, directly on headteacher@bellahoustonacademy.glasgow.sch.uk.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Chairperson<\/b><\/p>\n

The Parent Council should always be chaired by a member of the Parent Forum. The success of a meeting can depend upon how it is chaired but remember, the Chairperson is the person who makes sure things get done; not the person who does everything.<\/span><\/p>\n

There are two basic jobs the Chairperson should do:<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. a) Guide the Parent Council to achieve its aims<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. b) Chair the meetings of the Parent Council<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Some of the duties of the Chairperson are as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n

    Liaise with the Secretary on the agenda and meeting arrangements.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Welcome members and introduce guests.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Ensure fair discussion and that everyone gets a chance to have their say.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Stop anyone taking over or dominating discussions.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Get through the agenda on time.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Sum up issues, points and decisions.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Ensure decisions are carried out.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Work with the Treasurer to ensure that proper financial accounts are prepared for meetings, including the Annual General Meeting.<\/span><\/p>\n

    The Secretary<\/b><\/p>\n

    The Secretary plays an important role in supporting communication between Parent Council members themselves and between the Parent Forum and the Parent Council. It is important that the Parent Council agrees how members of the Parent Forum can get in touch with the Secretary and that these arrangements are well publicised so that all parents know how to make contact.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Some of the duties of the Secretary are to:<\/span><\/p>\n

    Make arrangements for meetings and prepare an agenda in consultation with the Chairperson.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Send a notice of the meeting, venue and agenda to all Parent Council members so that they will receive them in good time for the meeting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Keep a record of everyone attending the meeting and any apologies for absence.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Take a minute of meetings, recording decisions and actions to be taken and by whom. This can be a task that is shared amongst members of the Parent Council to allow the Secretary to participate in discussions.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Provide minutes for all Parent Council members prior to or at meetings.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Archive<\/span><\/h1>\n

    Apologies for the short notice, but the Parent Council meeting that had been booked in for Monday 11th May has been postponed<\/strong>. <\/strong><\/h1>\n

    We had hoped that we would be able to discuss the school’s inspection report, but the school has not yet received it, so we shall delay until June when it should be available. <\/strong><\/h1>\n

    We shall confirm date soon once the school know when they will get the report.<\/strong><\/h1>\n

    Like last time, we will meet in person at school but we will also make a zoom link available closer to the time for people to join online.<\/h1>\n

    The agenda is likely to focus on the outcomes of the school inspection, which took place this time, but if there are particular things you’d like to discuss, please just let me know.<\/h1>\n

    This will be the last Parent Council session of this school year. Also, reminder that I will be stepping down as parent council chair at the end of this session – it would be fantastic to identify someone to hand over to, as I know the school have really benefited from having a Parent Council to consult with, and I hope it has been valuable to parents and carers too.\u00a0 Formally, the new Chair would take over at the AGM which would be at the start of the new session, in September,\u00a0 If anybody would be keen to hear more about what the role involves, I’d be very happy to chat, just drop me an email.<\/h1>\n
