She and her Mum are taking part in the GDSS Playing with Sounds activities and phonological awareness games and activities are a regular feature of her literacy work in class. Pupil E is still struggling to identify and isolate individual phonemes in words, but activities including work with elkonin boxes, phoneme bingo and phoneme snakes and ladders, are having some impact. Pupil E is still at a very early stage of reading and, despite enjoying the phonically decodable Dandelion Readers, she usually sees reading as a chore and will not read independently.

Language development:

The focus should be on developing Pupil E’s vocabulary and understanding of language. Lots of talking and listening activities will benefit her most. She needs to develop a greater love of books and reading for enjoyment and to see a purpose to learning to read. Her mum is very supportive, but has said she lacks confidence in her own reading skills, so she tends not to read to Pupil E, although they enjoy playing games together.
Mum and other family members and friends could enjoy storytelling, free from books, perhaps using old photos or shared tales from the past. Pupil E should also be helped to recognise words in the print she sees as she goes about daily life – on shop fronts, buses, public buildings and so on.

Talking Books: Pupil E and her mum can enjoy listening to talking books from a range of sources and discussing the stories together. This will give reading a greater purpose. Her mum can be helping her to develop her comprehension strategies through discussion. Talking books can be accessed from Glasgow libraries in a range of formats. Pupil E’s mum can download the library app onto her mobile phone.
