Pupil C S1
Pupil C’s reading age is well below his chronological age and he struggles to access texts across all subjects. Pupil C has a GCC ipad which he received at the start of P7 and he is now confident using the Speech Controller to turn on and use text-to- speech https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n08DSisz1_M&list=PL2VyEh1iMeYLi7kYqb7Q5s -lvjGnta3ug&index=2
In some subjects he is given text books and he is finding it difficult to read them. When he is working on writing tasks, he struggles to organise his ideas and get them down on paper. His teachers give him extra time but Pupil C frequently misses out information or key points and sometimes leaves tasks unfinished. Pupil C frequently fails to hand in homework. His teachers use Showbie, Satchel 1 or Microsoft Teams to post task but Pupil C sometimes misses homework tasks because he doesn’t know where to look.
How Kent’s ipad could be used to support:
- Reading – Pupil C ‘s teachers regularly email or airdrop their presentations to him so that he can use text to speech to access them. However, textbooks remain a challenge for Pupil C to read independently. Pupil C can use Office Lens to photograph his textbook, and then use Immersive reader to read the text out loud to him https://youtu.be/wzINYEqVvJk Some textbooks are already available in digital format from CALL Scotland Books for All https://www.booksforall.org.uk/home/
- Use of Notes Pupil C can use the Notebook app to record and remember his homework tasks. Check in sessions twice a week with an SFL worker will help build his independence with this.
- Copying – Pupil C uses the iPad camera to take photos of diagrams and text on the board, instead of writing or typing. This ensures he has the information saved correctly and allows him to engage with the content of the information presented to him.
- Organisation – Pupil C is going to use the built-in Reminders app instead of a paper homework diary – he can use Siri to create and dictate his reminders so he doesn’t need to type. This will support completing homework on time as well as organisation of gym kit, forms to be completed and personal events.
