After School Clubs January to April 2016

One of the main aims of the Active Schools programme is to provide after school clubs in schools.

In the Rosshall Learning Community I work with the five Primary Schools and three ASL schools plus Rosshall Academy to provide a variety of clubs for all ages.

This term January to April 2016 we have a good mixture of clubs for all ages.

To see as full list of clubs click on the tab at the top of this blog – After School Clubs

Some of the clubs stand on their own and encourage children to be more active and healthy. Utd Sports provide coaches for a number of these clubs in the Rosshall LC. Here is a photo taken on Wednesday 20th January 2016 at Craigton PS. This is a Fun & Fitness Club for P3.

Other clubs we organise lead to an event and the clubs help prepare the children for that event.

This term we have three clubs that are leading to events.

Dance for P4-5

GHA (Glasgow Housing Association) very kindly sponsor this programme. We have nine schools involved and Ultimate Arts provide dance coaches who take a 6 week after school club. The coach works with the boys and girls on a routine which they will then showcase to their parents at our Dance Mania Event on Tuesday 8th March 2016 at Govan High School. All the children are given a special t-shirt for the event.

Here is a photo from a previous Dance Mania event …

Athletics for P7

We work very closely with Clyde College (Cardonald Campus) in the South West of Glasgow. We have a programme on a Thursday afternoon where the students take a curriculum session from 2-3pm and then an after school club from 3-4pm. This block from January to February 2016 the students will be taking an Athletics Club to help select and prepare a team of 6 boys and 6 girls to represent their school at our indoor Athletics event at the Emirates Arena on Wednesday 16th March 2016.

We have run this event over the last 4 years as an outdoor event in the summer but this year we are doing it as an indoor event. The event has been expanded to include all the areas of Glasgow so we will have 6 heats (North West x 2, North East x 2 and South x 2). The top 3 schools will then go through to a grand final on Wednesday 30th March 2016.

Here is a photo of the schools at our outdoor event in May 2015

Netball P6-7

The final event for this term is a Netball Tournament which will be held at Rosshall Academy on Thursday 17th March 2016. There will be clubs run by coaches from Utd Sports who will help prepare the children for the event.

Mile-a-thon Finale Run Thurs 3rd Dec 2015

On Thursday 3rd December over 350 children from Cardonald PS, Craigton PS, Crookston Castle PS, Hillington PS and Sandwood PS came together at Bellahouston Park to complete their Mile-a-thon challenge.

Over the last 13 weeks the pupils from P4-7 have been running one mile a week one lunch time and running another mile at home.

All those pupils who have stuck with the programme were invited to come to Bellahouston Park for the Mile-a-thon Finale. The weather was very kind to us with blue sky and no wind or rain!

Glasgow Housing Association (GHA) sponsored the event paying for the buses and medals. Active Schools would like to thank them for their continued support. This is now the 6th year GHA have been involved.

The pupils arrived on their buses for a 10am start.  John Kynaston led the pupils on a warm up to get them ready for the run.

The pupils were set off in groups starting with P7, then P6, P5 and finally P4.

The pupils needed to run at least 3 laps (0.5 mile per loop) to complete their Mile-a-thon but they could run as many laps as they could in the 25 minutes available.

I took some video clips and put together a short video of the event that hopefully the schools have been able to show to the children who took part.

Here are some photos taken from the video showing the children enjoying their run ….

Working in partnership with Clyde College (Cardonald Campus)

Over the past 6 years Active Schools has worked in partnership with Clyde College (Cardonald Campus).  We have a number of programmes with various students but the main one is our Thursday afternoon programme. Basically we have 65 students from three courses (NQ Sport, NQ Fitness and HNC Coaching) involved with 24 schools in the South West of Glasgow.

The students are in groups of 2-3 and they take a curriculum session from 2-3pm and then an after school club. It is a win-win situation for the students who get the experience of putting into practise what they are learning and for the schools who have some keen young people in their school as good role models.

The year is split into four blocks of 4-5 weeks. The first block started on Thursday 22nd October 2015 and the students are teaching Badminton.

In the Rosshall Learning Community we have students in all five Primary Schools (Cardonald, Craigton, Crookston Castle, Hillington and Sandwood).

From the pupils who attend the Badminton After School club the students will pick 8 pupils (4 girls and 4 boys) to represent their school in a Badminton Tournament to be held at Rosshall Academy on Thursday 26th November 2015.

Great Scottish Run Schools Run – Friday 3rd October 2015

On Friday 3rd October 2015 I was part of the Glasgow Active Schools team who organised over 3,000 P5 pupils to take part in the Great Scottish Run at Glasgow Green.

Over the previous few weeks many schools in Glasgow had been preparing their classes to take part in the run by organising training sessions. The children were looking forward to putting their training into practice by running the 2k loop at Glasgow Greeen finishing under the arch that a couple of days later world class athletes would also pass under at the end of their 10k or half marathon.

For our Active Schools team it is a lot of work to coordinate, manage, transport and look after 3,000 children! We divide the schools into 3 waves as follows …

WAVE 1

  • 09:45                            First wave of schools start to arrive
  • 10:00                            Warm-up for Wave 1
  • 10:10                            Start of Wave 1
  • 10:30                            Last child finishes
  • 10:30 – 11.20                Sports & Physical Activities
  • 11:30                            Wave 1 coaches depart

WAVE 2

  • 10:45                            Wave 2 coaches start to arrive
  • 11:00                            Warm-up for Wave 2
  • 11:15                            Start of Wave 2
  • 11:35                            Last child finishes
  • 11:35- 12:30                Sports & Physical Activities
  • 12:30                            Wave 2 coaches depart

WAVE 3

  • 12:15                            Wave 3 coaches start to arrive

Playground Buddies Training

Training P6 and P7 children to be Playground Buddies has been a successful Active School programme in Glasgow for the last 10 years. Basically the idea is that we train P6-7 to play games at lunch time with P1-3. It is a win-win situation as the older children love the responsibility of leading the games and the younger children love playing the games.

This term (August to September 2015) I have been working with three of my schools, Craigton, Hillington and Sandwood taking a P6 or P7 class for four weeks. Each week they learn how to lead games following a 5 step checklist …..

  • Name the game
  • Explain the game
  • Demonstrate the game
  • Question the children to make sure they know how to play
  • Play the game

Plus here is a summary of what I have been doing with them each week ….

  • week 1 – characteristics of a good and bad buddy
  • week 2 – how to deal with problems in the playground
  • week 3 – working together as a team
  • week 4 – a chance to put into practise what they learnt by leading games with a younger class

The training has gone really well and the classes have taken part enthusiastically.

Here are some photos from Hillington PS, Sandwood PS and Craigton PS from week 4 when they played games with a younger class ….
