The revamp of George Square has been branded as ‘madness’.
George Square is due to have a £500,000 redesign for the Commonwealth Games but it is to be ripped up right after the Games.
John McAslan who won the ‘winning’ idea has asked councillors to think about if it is worse spending £500,000 on something that will last for two weeks. He also said, “The idea that they would replace pink Tarmac with grey Tarmac for the two weeks of the games then rip it up seems to me to be absolute madness. They might as well kiss goodbye to £500,000.”
The idea of redesigning George Square has been a mess since it was first thought of. The architects of the designs that were chosen have been confused since the start as city officials have changed their minds about whether the plan is to go ahead or not.
A council spokesman said, “I’m sure Mr McAslan is as disappointed as we are that we weren’t able to progress with his design. However, the people of Glasgow made it abundantly clear they were not interested in a radical redesign of the square. In fact, we have listened to the people of Glasgow and are replacing the red Tarmac, retaining all the statues and introducing more greenery.”
The plan to upgrade the square will happen in two phases. The first phase involves replacing the Tarmac, introducing more greenery and fitted lighting for the statues which will be cleaned. The second phase will see the grey Tarmac being replaced with granite which will cost £15million.
The revamp in total will cost Glasgow about £15,500,000.
