Outdoor Learning Fortnight

Hi everyone,

Please remember it is Outdoor Learning Fortnight. 💚♻️🌲

It is very important your children come to school with warm clothes and proper shoes, wellies or walking boots are ideal.🧤🧣🥾  All should be bringing waterproofs to school too but a warm jumper and cosy layers (gloves, hat, snoods) are also a good idea as the weather is getting much colder.❄️☔️🌦

Here are some pictures of our learning so far:

Can’t wait for s’more adventures! Here’s what Class 2 want to learn during the 2 weeks;

Miss Cohen ♻️💚💜

Another Awesome Active week in Class 2! (Can you tell we’ve been learning about alliteration?!)

Literacy

This week, our Grammar focus was to add alliteration to our Recount Writing (Weekend News). What an amazing job Class 2 did of this task…check out the superstar work below;

Some of us were learning about the letters t and p this week. We completed scavenger hunts for these sounds, we used play dough to form the sounds correctly and we sorted picture cards, identifying their initial sounds.

Here Ivo worked really hard to identify the middle letter in common CVC words.

We also sorted out real CVC words and nonsense Ninja CVC words in two different categories.

In our Reading comprehension activities, we were tasked with using Mark-up on our iPads to add relevant speech bubbles to scenes from our reading books.

We also had to use an online thesaurus to identify different adjectives than the originals we found in our reading books.

Numeracy

In Numeracy this week, we have been focusing on revising our number bonds. Some of us were revising our bonds to 10, 20 and 100 (using both multiples of 10 and then adding two-digit numbers).

We used our knowledge of number bonds and rounding to the nearest 10 to count on to a particular amount of money.

This is tricky – but it is really useful to partition your numbers beforehand to work out which coins to use. For example, 57p = 50 and 7.

IDL/Topic

Our topic for this Term is all about enjoying and being in Nature safely and responsibly. This week, we focused on learning more about Orienteering.

We completed a Mentimeter word cloud based on what we thought we knew about Orienteering already before we started.

We then went out into the playground, where we had to work in pairs or small teams to follow a map and it’s directions using coloured cones.

We evaluated the task, reflecting on how well we coped working with another person, and how difficult it was to work out particular challenges. For those that wanted to, Miss Cohen added on some criteria like counting our map as we travelled through the cones, I.e. blues are worth 1 point, greens are worth 2 points, yellow = 3 points and reds = 4 points. The pair who followed the correct route and found their total points performed fantastically!📍💚

We then completed a relay race in the Gym Hall. We were given an individual key with symbols matched to objects/landmarks; fence, building, pond, bush etc. We had to run to match the symbol to its correct label/title – and then tag the next player in the team.  All of these fun games can be found on;

Learning about Prepositions ➡️⬅️⬆️⬇️↔️

Another of our Grammar focus’ this week was to learn about Prepositions.

We followed dictatorial instructions from Miss Cohen about where to place our animals on the bus.
Subhan ON TOP of the bench.
Kareem and Kit ON TOP of the logs.
Ross ON TOP of the picnic table.
Ivo ON TOP of the concrete slabs.
Kit BEHIND the tree.
Subhan BEHIND the tree.
Subhan BETWEEN two logs.
Kit’s legs were BETWEEN a log!
Khadija BETWEEN the picnic bench and a log!
Kareem BETWEEN two logs.
Ross BETWEEN two bushes.
Subhan UNDER a bench.
Kit UNDER the picnic bench.
Khadija BEHIND the tree.
Khadija BESIDE the tree.

“Forest-bathing” 🌲🌳🌿🌱

It was such a beautiful sunny day on Friday and we decided to take our usual Meditation/Yoga activity outside and include some Forest Bathing time.

Kit made his KNex masterpiece on Friday afternoon – Mr McCormack reckoned it looked like a lifesize germ! Kit said it was like a space satellite, and Miss Cohen thought it resembled DNA.

On a Friday, we always rate our learning during Weekly Evaluation time. We also decided to choose our favourite aspect of our learning from the week too. Here are our results:

Ross – 10/10; Couldn’t decide on his favourite.

Kit – 8/10; Forest Bathing

Subhan – 10/10; ALL of them!

Khadija – 10/10; ALL of them!

Ivo – 10/10; Orienteering

Kareem – not sure.

Hector – 7/10; playing Dodgeball with Duncan.

Happy Sunday everyone, hope you have had a restful weekend and enjoyed this glorious weather! 🌞

Keeping Pollokshields safe and thriving! ☺️😍🏡🏫🕌🕍

Hi all,

Below are some links to surveys that we, the St Albert’s learning community, would love your participation in.

A safer travel plan:

P7 are currently working towards creating a safer road on St Andrew’s Drive now that it is used by pupils entering and exiting the building.
We are using the results of this survey as evidence to the Glasgow Road Construction team to get them to build speed bumps on St Andrew’s Drive.
The link is:
Saving our local libraries:
P4 have been working hard to spread the news about local libraries at threat of closing. Here is an email they have drafted for your attention;
It is Primary 4.

We are emailing you to ask you if you want to sign a petition to save Pollokshields library. The library is important so please help save the library. We need books to read and to learn but Pollokshields library is shutting down for good. We need all the help we can get to save it. We can use the library for things that we don’t have at home like, using their computers and printers. The library runs baby book classes and activities for children. The library is so valuable to us and it shouldn’t close, so that is why we are asking everyone to sign this petition.
Thank you for your help in bringing about positive, local change! 💜👍🏽🗣

Class 2’s Weekly learning! 📝🧠

As you know, in Class 2 – we always rate our week of learning on a Friday during evaluations time. I am going to start off by revealing Khadija’s and Ross’ as they both had a super week and I was chuffed with their responses! 👍🏽😍😁

It was an 8 from Bilal!

Another solid 10 from Subhan!

Ivo was deliberating between an 8, 9 or 10 – hence why the photo turned out a little blurry haha!

A summary of what we have been learning this week from Class 2:

  • We have been counting the positives about ourselves this week. The Clips videos that we created are on Microsoft Teams for you to enjoy watching!
  • We made birthday videos for Mr Stewart’s 30th, which he celebrated on Friday (as well as it being Miss Bull’s birthday too!). As you can imagine – it was a day filled with excitement!
  • In Literacy – we have been learning about the “ee” sound during our Phonics work, and creating silly sentences with these words. We have also been learning about co-ordinating connectives during ‘Hammer the Grammer’ time; ‘and, so, but, or’. We have been writing recounts of our weekends – trying our best to include a co-ordinating connective of our choice. We have been continuing our Reading Comprehension work, and some of us have moved onto new books and stories! We have been practicing Handwriting the letter D in uppercase and lowercase lettering.
  • We have been continuing to work with money in Maths; converting p to £ and vice versa using inverse operations. We have been practicing making amounts with the fewest coins and investigating price cuts.
Here’s Ross making amounts with different coins! It was particularly tricky because he firstly had to convert p to £.
The boys are working collaboratively here to investigate the price cuts in Morrison’s products!
Hector ace-ing the price cut conundrum!

In Mental Maths, we have been focusing on estimating and rounding. Ross was excellent at describing what estimating meant and gave us an example of when his Dad might say; “I estimate I will arrive in 24 hours”. ⌚️🤔

An estimate is making an informed, rough guess.

  • We practiced estimating for simple addition sums, by rounding to the nearest 10.
  • Khadija and Kareem did a great job of making different amounts using 1p coins, and others where possible. We familiarised ourselves with the different coins, and both managed to successfully order them from 1p to £2. Nice job!

  • Ross and Subhan had spotted some apples ready for cooking with in the school Eco garden. We made apple and cinnamon muffins – they were very tasty! Here is the link if you want to try them again at home.🍏🍎🍏🍎

https://www.taste.com.au/recipes/basic-cinnamon-apple-muffins/5bc800c9-a884-485a-b07d-5ecaca9c04ac

Tip: Keep an eye on the oven after 10 minutes or so, as they bake quicker than anticipated!

Nom nom!!
  • As part of our IDL work, we are reconnecting with wild places and discovering Nature on our doorstep. We decided to measure the height of trees, and calculate their age – working with the abundance of beautiful trees that tower over our playgrounds.🌳🌲🌴

You can re-watch the instruction video and give it a go in your local green spaces/garden using the link below;

  • On Friday, we celebrated Subhan’s belated birthday! He turned 11 at the end of August – and we had another groovy “shin-dig” to celebrate the birthday boy!🎊🎉🎁🥳

  • Our school focus this week was Mental Health. Miss Cohen shared this important info-graphic on Teams at the beginning of the week and was so delighted to receive photographs and videos of strategies Kit and Hector both use to feel calm and relaxed. Thank you for your input!🤩

We did some Art therapy on Thursday afternoon where Miss Cohen asked the class to paint exactly how they were feeling at that moment in time. No instructions were given about which colours to select, what the painting should look like or include – and the responses generated from the class were so varied and unique!🎨

  • On Friday, we then decided to translate our paintings into silent mimes. They were SO fantastic!👌🏽

Here is Khadija’s about how happy and safe she feels when with her Aunty Miriam.

This is Bilal’s expressing how light and free he feels when completely relaxed.

Ivo feels happy when he is at a restaurant and laughing with his friends and family!

Here is Subhan’s. He is feeling inspired by a pop star, Justin Beiber.

Here is Kit’s piece, where he is expressing the journey of feeling anger to finding his calming, happy place.

Kayden did an excellent job here of expressing things that make him feel happiest; great white sharks and the Hulk.

Happy Sunday everyone – hope you are having a lovely weekend! 💜

An eventful week for Class 2! 🤩

Weekly Evaluations

We have been cooking in class. We made giant courgette, carrot and onion soup! We tried tasty fritters with courgette, feta cheese and parsley! – Whole class

We were learning money in Maths, counting pennies and notes/coins. – Khadija

In Handwriting, we wrote the letter C. – Bilal

In Phonics, our sound this week was ‘oa’. – Kit

Bilal – 9/10

Kit – 8/10

Khadija – 8/10

Kareem – 5/10

Ivo – 8/10

Hector – 7-8/10

In Maths, we have been working with single digit and two digit numbers and practicing adding 10 more and 10 less, and finding one more and one less. We like to use the Interactive 100 square to help us visualise this.

We have also started working with Money.  Our focus this week was to make different amounts with a variety of coins. This helps reinforce what we already know about counting in 2s, 5s, 10s etc. 💰💷

Hector realised that one of the zucchini’s growing in the garden was ready to pick! Wow…it weighed a ton.

We cooked with it and made courgette and feta fritters and some wholesome veggie soup! Yum!

We had the soup after playtime on Friday morning, all smiles from the happy soup tasters! 🥣🥕🧅🥒

This afternoon, we enjoyed some Choosing Time.

For P.E. this term, we are focusing on improving our Hockey skills. Today, we practiced shooting on target and dribbling the ball between the cones! Some excellent control and hand-eye coordination shown from Class 2 🏒

Afterwards, we enjoyed some chill out time in the school gardens. We played Hide and Tag and loved rolling down the hills…Miss Cohen too! 😍

We did some relaxing and calming yoga in class. We used spiky balls to massage a partner’s back and afterwards, we were feeling very zen!

Namaste folks – hope you have a restful weekend! 🤸🏾‍♀️🧘🏾‍♀️

Miss Cohen 💜
