Social Enterprise Academy Awards in Edinburgh

Today, Hafsa, Hussain, Laiba and Konstantinos went to Edinburgh with Miss Cohen to attend the SE Awards Ceremony in Edinburgh. We had great fun discussing our Skills Swap workshops to our stall visitors, and showing them our points loyalty cards which we use to promote a cashless, circular economy. We received a CHAMPION certificate for our exemplary Social Enterprise and Learning for Sustainability practice.💚♻️👏🏽

It was such a beaut day, so we took our lunch alfresco to Princes St Gardens and enjoyed it in the sun with a view of the castle…bliss! 😎🌞We had an ice cream on the way home and played charades and Stop the bus on the train!🍦

Well done for representing the school so well guys!

Sports Day at St A’s 🥇🥈🥉🥎🏀🏏🎽🥊

On Monday, we had our annual Sports Day event! We had such good fun at the Come and Try sessions, where there was an amazing range of activities to participate in; Karate, Cricket, Netball, Soft tennis, Yoga, Beanbag throw, Highland caber throwing and welly wangin’, water balloon passing, HIIT workout and dodgeball!

In the afternoon, we managed to compete in the sack race and the relay race before the heavy rain started! Typical! But what fun we had in the hailstones trying to find shelter! ☔️💦😅

We even had the chance to try out the Tug of War inside with our Sports Leader helpers from Bellahouston Academy! Things got heated and veeeery competitive lol!

We will reschedule the races for this Friday afternoon so that we can have closure to our sporting event!

A week full of trips and experiences!

On Tuesday, Primary 7 visited the Anne Frank exhibition currently being held at St Mungo’s Museum, which pays tribute to her legacy and life. Anne Frank would have celebrated her 90th birthday on the 12th June. As Zainab said, “It’s crazy to think that one person could have so much power”. This is very true – and we should look to all of the amazing, positive role models that use their power and position to benefit society and bring about sustainable, loving change.

On Wednesday and Thursday, a big group of children who are attending Bellahouston Secondary attended their induction days.

On Friday, some P7s attended the TedX Glasgow event which took place at the SECC and Armadillo. There were a range of guest speakers discussing some incredibly important themes; Democracy in Politics, mental health and male identity, environmental waste and plastic pollution and many more! We enjoyed listening to the talks, as well as attending the lunchtime silent disco which was a personal FAVE 🥳👏🏽🕺🏽💃🏽🎧🎉

The remaining P7s went to the Tramway in the morning to learn more about careers and professions in the Arts world. 🎭🎟🎬🎤🎧🎸🎫 They had a live Q&A session with employees from the Citizens Theatre, to which they could only respond yes or no to our questions about the nature of their role/occupation.

All in all, a busy and exciting week!

Can’t wait for Sports Day and our Leavers trip to Blair Drummond next week!

Sharing our Data Handling learning with our P6/7 and P6 peers

Primary 7 had a great morning leading the P6 and P6/7s around their planned carousel of learning task on Data Handling.

They taught their peers how to use a Venn diagram, and create their own criteria, how to use KeyNote to translate data into 2D and 3D graphs, how to calculate the mean, mode, median and range of a given set of amounts, how to use a protractor accurately when measuring real life angles/objects, and where to recognise each style of graph in an everyday context and for what use.

Primary 7 then peer assessed the groups using traffic lights and registers, analysing if the group were able to meet the success criteria and objectives within the time.

It was really enjoyable, and looking forward to doing more in Term 4!

Malala Gala Dinner organised by Social Bite #EndHomelessness

Last week, Saleeha, Zeenat and Miss Cohen went through to Edinburgh for the evening to attend Social Bite’s Gala dinner, with special guest Malala hosting the red carpet event. Zeenat and Saleeha both looked GORGEOUS, and their dresses were the envy of many!

Malala was so inspiring. Her stories of Asian culture really resonated with the girls, and inspired them to have hope, faith and courage in their lives.

It was lovely to see Alice and Rachael again – and hear about SB’s exciting plans to do the Wee Sleep Out and Big Sleep Outs on an International Scale in 2020.
