Gruffalos, Giants and a Teddy Bear’s Picnic – Celebrating World Book Day and International Women’s Day!

In honour of International Women’s Day AND Book Day this week we have been learning about one of our favourite Authors, Julia Donaldson!

We read lots of stories by the author including The Gruffalo and The Smartest Giant in Town.

We re-told the story of The Gruffalo using the stick puppets we coloured and cut out ourselves.

In our Forest School session this week we went on a Gruffalo Hunt! We had to work in groups to read these clues and find the characters from the story!

When we came back to the classroom we found The Gruffalo had left some..erm…tasty treats for us to try!

Best face ever!

We used adjectives to describe what each of the animals tasted or felt like and wrote sentences about them.

We made a Giant Gruffalo using recycled materials and wrote labels for the different parts of his body, just like the descriptions in the story!

Miss Bull read us the story of The Smartest Giant in Town. We had to listen out for words that had our sound of the week (‘sh’) in ,and see if we could match our sound stick to the rest of the word on the board.

Innayah was the bravest Giant in Town and let us dress her up in a smart shirt, a stripy tie, shiny shoes, smart trousers and yellow socks, the same as the Giant!

On International Book Day we came in dressed as our favourite characters. Some parents came to read to us and we re told our favourite stories to the class!

We showed and talked to the parents about all the work we had been doing this week!

On International women’s day we talked all about the favourite women in our lives and what  makes them so special. We had a Teddy Bear’s picnic in class and made some presents for our special women!

What a busy week! Thank you my little P1B book worms for making it so fun – I am so proud of all of all of your achievements this week, have a lovely weekend!

Term 3 Topic in P1B!

For our Topic we have been learning all about animals that live in Scotland. We have been learning all about the animals and their habitats and making digital stories about them, adding in our own illustrations and voice recordings.

We went on a trip to Kelvingrove Museum to see if we could spot any of the animals! Have a look at what we found - can you name any of them?

We LOVED taking the Subway, eating our lunch outside in the sun AND going to the park!

For Chinese New Year we read a traditional Chinese story called The Magic Paintbrush. We used our own magic paintbrushes and our imaginations to create magic pictures of our own.

Term 3 Literacy in P1B!

We are such fantastic readers in P1B! We have been learning to read and order sentences with lots of tricky words in. This is helping us to help us to read our books at home.

Every wednesday we are we are lucky enough to have some of our families come in to help us with our phonics and other Literacy and Maths activities. We do lots of exciting activities like using dough and outdoor equipment to make objects and words that have the sound we have been learning in. We have been learning lots of new sounds this term: z,w,ng,v,oo,y,x,ch

We we had a visit from the RSPB. We read a story all about a hibernating hedgehog, we went on a Nature hunt and then used describing words to talk about the different objects we had collected from outside.

We have been learning to write CVC and CVVC words like Cat, Zip, Hat, Dog, book, look, independently and learning how to use our sound card to help us.

We have been learning to write short sentences using tricky words!

We play lots of games in P1B that help us to read short words and captions and match them to the pictures.

Sentence surprise! Every week we get a sentence surprise in our jars . The sentence is cut up into separate words and we have to read it and put it together to make it make sense.

Term 3 Numeracy in P1B!

This term P1B have been using different objects to help us with our addition skills. We have been learning how to add two groups of objects together and representing this in different ways.  We have also been focussing on learning our number bonds to 10. We made a number bond robot and we named him Meatball!

Ahoy there me hearties! We had a visit from nasty Captain Stinky who’d hidden some stolen treasure in our playground. When we found it, we realised it had numbers on it so we had the job of ordering all 20 coins to make sure we had found them all.  Miss Bull sent us on a pirate assault course to collect more treasure, bring it back to our team and add the two groups of treasure together to find the total. Other members of the team had the job of writing the sum down on the board behind.

We’ve also been learning all about money! We have been learning to recognise different coins and add 1ps and 2ps together to buy items from the shop. We’ve also been practicing to write shopping lists.

Welcome back P1B!

Welcome back P1B!

Since returning to school we have P1B have loved sharing their stories about what they did in the holidays with the class. This was fantastic for helping us to practise our speaking and listening skills and for practising how to re-tell events in order using time vocabulary such as “first, next, then, before, after, finally”.

In Numeracy we have been starting to learn all about money. We have been leaning to recognise the coins and talk about their similarities and differences. We decided to open a shop in the class to help us learn more about money through play.  We practiced writing our numbers by making lots of price stickers to stick on all the items in the shop. We are looking forward to understanding more about the value of different coins and how much we need to buy our favourite toys and healthy foods!

Since the beginning or term we have already learnt 4 new sounds! Oa (as in goat, boat, oak, and oats), ie (as in pie, lie, tie), ee (as in bee, see, need) and or (as in fork, torch, sort).  We made porridge using oats and praticed the ‘oa’ sound by writing it in our porridge recipe. We came up with some funny sentences and had a go at writing them. The bee who needed a wee was our favourite and made us all laugh!

We are really enjoying our new reading books and we love reading and learning more about the characters Biff, Chip, Kipper and Floppy. We have been learning about sentence structure by practicing putting mixed up words in the right order, remembering our capital letters, our finger spaces and our full stops!

It might be chilly outside but just like Elsa, the cold doesn’t both us anyway! This week we have been outside in our Forest School sessions building dens! We are really getting the hang of putting on our own waterproof suits and wellies, as long as we are suited and booted, we’re ready for anything!

We learnt how to build different types of Dens using different structures. We practiced tying knots and gave our fine motor muscles a work out by pegging and clipping the den together. Making a den requires lots of Team Work. We helped each other to stretch out the tarpaulin, peg it down and use the mallet safely to secure the peg into the ground. We told magical stories in the dens and wrote secret messages to each other on our top secret notepads!

Another busy start to the term for P1B!

Our First Term in P1B!

We couldn’t have asked for more fun filled, fantastic first term in P1B!

All of the children made a super start and wasted no time making use of absolutely every aspect of their exciting new school environment!

Our first topic of the term was ‘People Who Help Us’. We learnt all about the different people in our community who help us including Doctors, Nurses, Fire fighters, Teachers, Vets and we were even lucky enough to have a visit from a real life Police Officer! We asked him lots of questions about his job and even got to try on some real  Police uniform.

We used non-fiction books and the school i pads to help us to find out information about the job a Fire Fighter. In Art we learnt how to mix red and yellow to make orange so that we could create Fire paintings of our own!

All of this information helped us to recreate the everyday lives and jobs of these people who help us through role play in the classroom.

In Numeracy this term we started by learning about different sorts of patterns; shape patterns, colour patterns, number patterns, picture patterns and patterns in the environment! We started by copying simple patterns and then moved on the creating our own patterns using resources in the classroom and outside.

We have also been learning how to collect and analyse data by collecting different objects and learning how to ask questions such as ‘What is your favourite colour?’ to gather information. Using pictures, objects, tally marks and numbers we learnt how to organise and display our findings in different ways.

Here we are on a walk around Pollokshields collecting data on different types of buildings in the area. We made tally marks on a chart to record how many houses, flats, shops, schools and places of worship we could see.

In P1B we LOVE numbers, which is very handy because we have been doing A LOT of counting! This term we have been focussing on numbers 0-20, counting verbally, counting objects 1:1, recognising numbers, ordering and sequencing numbers and even having a go at writing them!

Shape, shape, what’s that shape? What’s that shape  I see? https://www.bbc.com/bitesize/clips/zhnvcdm

We’ve also been learning about simple 2D shapes and their properties. We played lots of guess the shape games and had a go at making shapes out of natural materials outside.

In Literacy we have been focussing on learning the first 2 sets of sounds in the Jolly Phonics programme (s,a,t,I,p,n,c,e,r,h,m). We have been learning 2 new sounds each week and do lots of activities both inside and outside to help us learn how to recognise and say the sound, write the sound and to learn what words start with that sound.

On a treasure hunt for things that start with the sound ‘t’.

Sorting objects that start with the sounds and blending the sounds together with our racing cars to read the word.

Making the sound ‘C’ using Conkers.

In P1B we also LOVE reading! We read at least one story as a class each day and are given time to choose our own books and talk about them with friends. In Term 1, A secret book bug delivered a very special new reading mat and some new books. It was a beautiful afternoon so we worked together as a class to put together the pieces of the reading mat outside. We sat down and talked about how to treat our books with care, how to turn the pages and looked at and named all the different parts of the book (the front cover, the back cover, the author, the illustrator, the writing and the illustrations). We looked at the differences between fiction (story books) and Nonfiction (information books) and discussed which books we liked best and why.

We were also lucky enough to take a trip to the library. We walked sensibly all the way from school to Pollokshields library, talking about all the different things we could see along the way and making sure to hold our partners hand and stay safe when crossing the roads. At the library we learnt about the different books they have to offer and listened to a story read by the library staff.

Our second big topic of the term was Construction. We used traditional tales such as the 3 little pigs to learn about different building materials and used different construction equipment in the classroom to make and build.

We looked at different buildings and structures around the world and learnt about how they are designed and made. In art we used junk material and worked in teams to make our very own giant Big Ben and Eiffel Tower.

We had a very special visit from a digger at School!

We used our new toys to role play being builders outside. We learnt how to make cement and replicated it in our play.

As Term 1 was coming to a close, the children noticed that the leaves were starting to fall off of the trees and our outdoor environment was starting to change. Autumn had officially arrived and we had lots of fun using our senses to explore and learn about the changing of the seasons and what that meant for living things in our environment.

We read a story called The Bog baby by Jeanne Willis which is all about a very interesting little pond creature. We listened to descriptions of The Bog Baby and without seeing the pictures, we predicted what it looked like and made our own. We also went pond dipping to see if we could catch our own little Bog Baby…but unfortunately we didn’t have any luck! We think it was probably a bit too cold for Bog Babies!

And just when we thought Autumn couldn’t get any more exciting, we had a visit from a Mr Prickles the Hedgehog!

What a fantastically busy term we had! No wonder we were so ready for a Holiday!

I hope you all had a wonderful week off, I certainly did! I can’t wait for more Learning and Fun with P1B in Term 2!

Until next time! Miss Bull XxXx
