Huge thanks to Miss Blair for the significant amount of time and effort that went into planning and organising everything. The children have had a packed timetable of sessions – football, archery, netball, karate, judo, curling, performing arts, dance, axe throwing, stretch and movement, cycling, circus skills and fruit tasting! It is exhausting just reading about all of these! ⚽🎯🪓🚴‍♂️🥋💃🍇🍍🎪🤹‍♀️

Without the support of local sports groups and Active Schools, none of these sessions would be possible, so we are very grateful to them for their time and commitment.

The weather has not been on our side for much of the week, and we have had to adapt our plans to fit all our activities in. We were sorry to have to cancel Sports Day on Wednesday, but access to the field was not possible in the wet weather and the conditions were unsafe. We still managed to run whole-school potted sports in the playground with help from the Sports Ambassadors from St Columba’s High School. They were a great support in setting up equipment and guiding the children around the stations.

Transition activities continued this week, with some children visiting Kinross High School for their full-day visits. A parent information evening was held at St Columba’s High School, P7 pupils who are learning an instrument were invited to St Columba’s for a Play Day, and we also had nursery transition activities taking place.

On Thursday, we held our Family STEM Night. This show, along with the workshops during the day for the whole school, was only possible due to grant funding from the Royal Institution. It was a fantastic evening, with an exciting STEM show and a range of hands-on activities for families to enjoy afterwards. We once again had support from Henry Rae from the University of St Andrews, along with senior pupils from St Columba’s High School, who were fantastic science ambassadors. Thank you to everyone who came along to support the event. 🧪👨‍🔬

We also had a visit from STEM Ambassadors from Optos in Dunfermline. They have designed a special camera that can take images of the back of the eye. They delivered workshops for P4/5/6 and P6/7, teaching them about how the eye works. The children had the opportunity to try glasses that simulated a variety of visual impairments. They were then challenged to invent something to support people with visual impairments. 👁️👀

Throughout all of the workshops, visitors commented on how well-behaved and polite our children were, and how they asked excellent questions. They make us all proud every day!

Finally, on Friday, we had a visit from the Sisters. Mother Ostrabrama and Sister Atonement visited the classes and spoke to the children about the Sacred Heart. The children always enjoy seeing the Sisters. 🙏

It has certainly been a busy week! Wishing you all a lovely weekend, and keeping our fingers crossed for the Scotland team!

Vanessa

Headteacher Update 5/06/26

The P4/5 football team were in action this week at a tournament in Dunfermline. They showed great spirit and resilience throughout a tricky tournament. Well done, team! ⚽️

Special thanks to Barry from Kelty Hearts, who ran more football sessions for our P3–P7 children this week. The weather was awful for some of the classes walking up to the Community Centre, but it didn’t stop the football fun. ⚽️🥅

P6/7 had the final session of their STEM workshop, ‘Road to RIAT’, and took part in an online question-and-answer session called ‘STEM Superstars’. They heard from Drew, an RAF pilot, and Kristina, an engineer at BAE.

Mrs Taylor attended the STEM Space Conference at Glasgow University and presented a short talk on how the programme has been used at St Joseph’s. She came back full of exciting maths ideas to share with us!

Today, we had a group of P7 pupils attending another Ready, Steady, Grow transition event at St Columba’s. These visits have been a great way to help the children prepare for the move to high school.

Health Week is planned for next week, and Miss Blair has worked really hard to create a full programme of events and activities. Unfortunately, the weather is not looking good, so we may have to postpone Sports Day. We will let everyone know on Tuesday afternoon. Please make sure that children come dressed for the weather, as we will be outside rain, hail or shine! ☔️☀️

We have decided to move the date of the colour run to Thursday 2nd July. It will be a fun end to the school year, and hopefully the sun will shine for us! Watch this space for more information. 🏃‍♂️🏃🏃‍♀️

Next Thursday evening (Thursday 11th June), we will have our Family STEM Night. There will be a science show, ‘Energy Live!’, in the hall at 5:15pm, and then you are invited to visit the classrooms and take part in some hands-on STEM activities. Please come along and support the event.

Finally, Denise from the Early Help and Support Team will be holding a drop-in session on Tuesday 9th June in school from 9:00am–11:00am. This is a great opportunity to speak with Denise, ask questions, or find out about the support available. Please pop along to see her.

Have a wonderful weekend and say a wee prayer 🙏 that the sun shines for us next week.

Vanessa

Headteacher Update 29/05/26

I hope that you have all noticed our beautifully tidied-up planters at the front door. Thanks to the P1/2 children, Mrs Mair, and Mrs Fernie, our entrance to the school looks so much better. Jimmy has also worked hard to repaint some of the school signs, and it is all looking great. 🪴🏵️🌱

The Primary 5 children have been learning more about using their iPads for learning in class. Miss Blair has been learning lots too! The teaching staff attended the final iPad training session on Wednesday evening. This week, they were learning about developing creativity in learners through the use of iPads.

Hazel from Childsmile visited the school to check in on the P1/2 and P3/4 classes and their toothbrushing routines, and she introduced toothbrushing to the P4/5/6 class. The Childsmile fluoride varnish programme has now ended in school, so the alternative is to encourage all children to brush their teeth in school. This will extend to P6/7 in time. 🪥🦷

The Fire Brigade came to visit the children in P6 and P7 to speak to them about staying safe in water and to discuss the dangers of wildfires. Unfortunately, they had to be called away to an emergency, but Mrs Taylor was able to step in and present their slides. 🔥🚒🧑‍🚒

On Thursday evening, some of our learners were invited to the Awards Ceremony for the Kelty Young Artist Competition. This is always a lovely event, celebrating the talent of our children in the village. Congratulations to Francesca, Mia, Harley and David, who were all prize winners! 🖼️🎨

We are very excited about the Parent Council Colour Run, which will take place on Friday 12th June. Letters about the event were sent home with sponsor sheets and raffle tickets. The Parent Council is working hard to raise funds to support the purchase of resources for the school.

We held our final Maths Café of this term. The focus was on the importance of games for learning in maths. If you have attended one of our Maths Café afternoons, it would be greatly appreciated if you could please complete this feedback form: Maths Café – Parent Feedback – Fill out form

The weather has been amazing this week, and the children have enjoyed opportunities to take their learning outdoors. Please remember to send water bottles and sun hats, and to apply sun cream before school. The playground is a real suntrap and can become very hot. 🥤🧢

Have a wonderful long weekend. 🌞 We will see you all on Tuesday.

Vanessa

Headteacher Update 22/05/26

has been a week full of STEM activities for our upper school pupils. They prepared a fantastic model school with lots of eco features.

Primary 1/2 celebrated National Numeracy Day with a full day of number fun and challenges. They also submitted entries for the Numeracy Heroes competition. 🔢

Transition activities continued with our new Primary 1 pupils coming to school for their second visit. This week, they enjoyed lunch in the dinner hall with their parents and then spent some time in the classroom. Some of our P7 pupils also had Headstart transition visits to St Columba’s on Wednesday. On Friday, all of our Primary 7 pupils travelled to St Andrew’s High School for the ‘Moving On Mass’ for P7 children from the St Columba’s and St Andrew’s High School clusters. The children represented the school beautifully, and it was a lovely celebration of their time in primary school.

Mrs Yau was in school on Thursday and carried out a training session with the Literacy and Numeracy PALS. The Peer Assisted Learning project has been used across Fife, and the children are very keen to take part in St Joseph’s.

We have a couple of groups in school who have been working to develop the school garden. We were delighted to receive a donation of compost and plants from the family of some of our pupils. Thank you to Mr Greenough for thinking of St Joseph’s—your donation is very much appreciated. If you have any extra plants or compost in your garden, we would be very happy to receive donations for our garden spaces and planters. 🌱🏵️

Mrs Milne had her last few days in school before leaving us to await the arrival of her new baby. The P6/7 children gave her a lovely baby shower on Wednesday afternoon. We will miss her very much but are looking forward to meeting baby Milne very soon!

The Maths Cafe returns on Tuesday after school. All families are welcome and we would love to see you there!

Finally, we have just received confirmation that our Family STEM Night can go ahead again this year, thanks to grant funding from the Royal Institute. The children in P6 were very excited to meet their buddies and begin building friendships to support them on their transition journey into school and throughout their P1 year. The children enjoyed some time in class with Mrs Mair, Mrs Urquhart and Mrs Bowie. Parents heard a little more about life in St Joseph’s, and some of our P7 pupils took them on a tour of the school.

Some of our learners transitioning to high school also had visits this week, with Kinross High School transition days and a group of children attending Ready, Steady, Grow at St Columba’s on Friday afternoon.

Denise from the Early Help and Support Team was in school on Tuesday morning for a drop-in session. Denise can support or signpost on matters such as ASN, neurodivergent strategies, housing, financial advice, group work in the area or online, education, schooling, routines and boundaries, mental health and sleep routines. No question is too big or too small, and everyone is welcome. We will send out more details of her next visit on the school app.

On Thursday, we all celebrated Mass in St Joseph’s for the Feast of the Ascension of Our Lord. Children were also reminded that they should not bring toys or fidget toys into school. We have had many instances of children trading or losing them, which has caused upset. Toys should be kept at home where they are safe.

We also had a visit from Kirsty Frost, our Educational Psychologist, who carried out staff training with teachers and PSA staff on the use of the Circle resource, as well as planning and providing appropriate sensory activities.

The Gala Club began on Thursday evening, and we have lots of fun ideas to bring our Carnival float to life for the gala in June. The children have all been asked to think about some ideas to bring back to the club next week.

Next week will be Mrs Milne’s last week before she begins her maternity leave. Everyone was excited and maybe a little nervous about what was to come!

Also on Tuesday the Primary 6 pupils enjoyed a trip to the National Mining Museum in Newtongrange alongside the Primary 6 pupils from Kelty Primary School. The trip was funded and organised by Kelty Community Council and was a great experience for the children. They learned about coal mining and the history of coal and could relate what they learned to the history of our village. The children were a credit to the school throughout the trip; they were polite, well‑mannered, and listened carefully at all times. Their behaviour was excellent, and they represented the school with pride. I was very proud of them.

On Thursday, work continued in school, with teachers attending the Transforming Learning Conference and others working on school improvement priorities and staff training. We were delighted to welcome Mrs Smith back for a keeping‑in‑touch day.

The Primary 7 pupils returned on Friday afternoon tired but with lots of stories of their experience at the residential. There was tree climbing, burn scrambling, leaps of faith, bushcraft, and even the celebration of a birthday! They faced the challenges with courage and resilience and supported each other throughout. They also enjoyed meeting new friends and speaking with high school staff, starting to build relationships for their transition in August. Miss MacCaskill and Miss Blair had a great time and were so proud of everything the children achieved. They commented on the excellent behaviour of the children and how well they represented St Joseph’s. A huge thank you to Miss Blair and Miss MacCaskill for all their hard work over the week — they will definitely be in need of a long lie this weekend!

Have a wonderful weekend.

Vanessa

Headteacher update 01/05/26

The week we welcomed Abbie our Active Schools assistant back to school. Our final session of this year will be in May you are very welcome to join us. We are hoping to run similar sessions in the new year and if you have any maths questions please send them in to us.

The weather has been beautiful this week and as a result the playground can be very warm at lunchtime. As we move into the summer months please make sure that sun cream is applied to your children in the morning and they have a water bottle with them for the day.

Can I also please remind you of the procedures for when a child is sick or has diarrhoea.
