March 26<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

This term our class novel is \u2018The Explorer\u2019 by Katherine\u00a0Rundell. We have been working hard on answering VIPERS questions using prompts and evidence from the text to support our answers. We are continuing to work on building in expression and focusing on\u00a0different types\u00a0of punctuation when reading aloud.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In writing we have been focusing on persuasive texts this term. We have been writing about different topics such as animal testing,\u00a0iPads\u00a0in schools, mobile phones in schools and longer playtimes. We build up our writing using different skills to then write balanced arguments. The last few weeks we have been working on informative texts. We have started with leaflets and have created some excellent examples as shown.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\" \"\" \"\" \"\"<\/p>\n

We have been learning to\u00a0<\/span>identify<\/span>\u00a0key information in texts that we have read or listened to and have used this to make short notes and\u00a0<\/span>mind<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>maps<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0Using different news sources, we have been learning to spot the difference between fact, opinion,\u00a0<\/span>speculation<\/span>\u00a0and rumour<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In numeracy we have been working on short division using the bus stop method. We have been doing a daily times table challenge to support the fluency and accuracy of learning each\u00a0times\u00a0table.\u00a0It was challenging at first, but we have all made great progress learning our tables and their matching division facts.\u00a0We have started working on factors,\u00a0multiples\u00a0and primes which our tables knowledge will be\u00a0really useful\u00a0for. We have been working on our understanding of fractions, finding equivalent fractions by multiplying and dividing,\u00a0and converting fractions to decimals. This will be\u00a0really helpful\u00a0when we build on our understanding of finding a fraction of a quantity.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We supported Mrs Anderson with the planning and preparation of World Book Day. We all had\u00a0different roles\u00a0and responsibilities on the run up to this.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Pope Francis- This award shows that the children have<\/span>\u00a0used all the gifts of the Holy Spirit when showing love of God and love of others.\u00a0The\u00a0children\u00a0also\u00a0have to\u00a0reflect\u00a0on how their actions have made an impact on their journey of faith.\u00a0<\/span>P6 have started working on the Pope Francis award which runs over two years. P7 are almost finished the work for the award and will receive a certificate at the end of the year.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We had the police in for a visit to talk about keeping ourselves and others safe online. This was a brilliant session that highlighted all the dangers of online.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In STEM we have been working on our Climate Change project and have been\u00a0<\/span>finding out<\/span>\u00a0how to\u00a0<\/span>harness the power of wind and water. We have carried out\u00a0<\/span>investigations into making floating wind turbines and hydropower generators. There have been some challenges along the way that we have\u00a0<\/span>found solutions\u00a0<\/span>to<\/span>\u00a0and we now understand the purpose of a counterweight!<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We began our Aerospace Kinross flight challenge by creating a safety charter for using the drones. The drones are\u00a0very hard\u00a0to\u00a0fly\u00a0and we have come up against a few technical difficulties with them, however Mrs Taylor is working hard to resolve them. P7 pupils have worked on researching\u00a0different roles\u00a0in the aerospace industry and have produced presentations or job\u00a0adverts for them.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

P6 enjoyed lots of visits to the St Columba\u2019s science department to take part in some CSI science.\u00a0\u00a0Someone stole Mr McGee\u2019s PARS season ticket!\u00a0They\u00a0learned about chromatography,\u00a0finger print\u00a0analysis and pH then used this information to catch the culprit.\u00a0They also had a tour of the high school, ate snack in the cafeteria, and met some new friends from St Bride\u2019s RC Primary.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In PE we have started working on different fitness skills \u2013 strength, stamina, speed,\u00a0<\/span>flexibility<\/span>\u00a0and agility. We have been remembering that the only person we need to compete with is\u00a0<\/span>ourselves and<\/span>\u00a0challenging ourselves to give 100%.<\/span><\/p>\n

This term\u00a0we got our Transforming Learning iPads! We have made great progress learning about\u00a0how different apps, tools and websites can support our\u00a0learning.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Our topic this term is \u2018Changing Britain\u2019.\u00a0We are looking at\u00a0<\/span>important events\u00a0that shaped the country over time<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>and how these\u00a0events changed British society, politics, the economy, and culture.\u00a0We also did a mini topic for the high school all about \u2018The Great Fire of London\u2019.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dec 25<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

We have just finished our class novel \u2018Holes\u2019 and we watched the\u00a0film this week. We all really enjoyed this book\u00a0and were engaged during the learning linked to it. In writing we have been linking in our book to create newspaper articles. We also created our own Winter inspired poems using our senses.\u00a0\u00a0In spelling we have been continuing to progress with our bronze, silver, gold,\u00a0platinum\u00a0and emerald words at our\u00a0own\u00a0pace. Some of the children have been learning about Greek and Latin root words.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We have been working on rounding numbers to the nearest 1000, 10 000, 100 0000 and 1 000 000. Some of us\u00a0have been\u00a0working on rounding decimals to the nearest decimal place and whole number. We have been learning strategies to\u00a0further develop our understanding of multiplication, including arrays, area\u00a0models\u00a0and grid methods. The Stem Space project is\u00a0nearly\u00a0complete,\u00a0and we have been\u00a0learning\u00a0how to draw in 3D.\u00a0\u00a0We have been using visualisation to predict how our shapes will look when they are rotated through 90 degrees.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We have had an extremely busy term working on lots of STEM projects.\u00a0We have been looking at Climate Change and\u00a0different types\u00a0of clean energy. Efforts to get solar panels to light up LEDs were limited by the Scottish \u2018sunshine\u2019\u00a0but we managed to generate a little electricity!\u00a0\u00a0P6 from P4\/5\/6 joined us for\u00a0a\u00a0whole\u00a0day\u00a0working with the\u00a0Smallpeice\u00a0Trust and RAF\u00a0to create our own gliders and measure their flights. We have been designing a sustainable\u00a0aircraft\u00a0to\u00a0enter\u00a0their competition.\u00a0\u00a0Our entry for the Aerospace Kinross challenge was successful\u00a0and\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0looking forward to trying out our mini drones in class for the next stage of the challenge.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Our focus this term has been substance misuse. We have been learning all about vaping\/smoking,\u00a0alcohol\u00a0and drugs. We have been focusing on\u00a0the impact they can have on\u00a0our own and others\u00a0physical and emotional wellbeing. We have been looking at different scenarios around peer pressure and working on ways to overcome barriers linked to this. The children have been keen to learn more around internet safety so we have been\u00a0focusing\u00a0on\u00a0ways\u00a0in\u00a0which we can keep ourselves and others safe online.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In PE we have been working on some gymnastics skills, including balances and jumps. We have also been helping to coach P3\/4 in basketball.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We have been continuing to work closely with Abbie from Active Schools to work on communication and teamwork.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We have been learning all about different Saints. We worked in small groups to research a Saint that we were interested\u00a0about\u00a0and made our findings into posters. In RME we have also been learning about Advent and how it is all about giving back. We thought about ways in which we could give back to others.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We have been working hard to learn lots of Christmas songs to support the P1\/2 class with their Nativity. We have been using our\u00a0buddy\u00a0time to practice on a Monday<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>Mrs Milne and Mrs Taylor are\u00a0really proud\u00a0of us for performing in front of a large audience.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We have been involved in a few Christmas card competitions this term.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Oct 25<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

P6\/7 have settled in well this term. It has been a busy, but fun filled term so far. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In literacy we have been reading \u2018Holes\u2019 by Louis Sachar as our class novel. We have been learning how to answer different VIPERS questions linked to this book. In writing our text type this term has been narrative. We have been writing our own imaginative stories using different genres. We have been working in groups to create PowerPoints to present to the rest of the class. We will be working on asking questions as an audience and answering questions as a speaker.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In maths we have been reading and interpreting timetables. We have been using different strategies to support us when working out elapsed time and duration of a journey. We have been reading bus and train timetables to support this learning.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We have been revising our understanding of place value and how we can use it to multiply and divide by 10,100 and 1000.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We have been part of the STEM Space Project which supports us to develop spatial reasoning skills through maths lessons. We\u2019re enjoying the activities, and they\u2019ve got us thinking hard!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We did a short artist study on the Scottish artist Richie Collins and created our own pieces of art inspired by his work.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In STEM we have been learning about the forces involved with flight through a variety of experiments. We have been trying out paper airplane designs to see how different variables affect the effectiveness of the plane.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In Health and Wellbeing, we have been learning about smoking and the effects that it can have on our bodies.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We are working towards our Pope Francis award in RME. We have been learning to use the Gifts of the Holy Spirit at home, at school and in parish.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We have been lucky to have lots of sport opportunities in school this term. The playground leaders have been working hard to learn new games to support the younger children at break time and lunchtime. Matthew from Dunfermline Rugby Club came in for two taster sessions that the whole class got to participate in. We had a group of pupils who took part in the Junior Leader Training at the Community Centre with Mrs Fernie.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On Friday\u2019s we are lucky to have the Junior Leaders in to lead basketball sessions. We also have a STEM club that runs on a Friday afternoon.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The P7 pupils had their first transition morning at St Columba’s. The morning was filled with information about the school followed by a chance to socialise with pupils from the cluster schools.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We have been lucky to have Mrs Reid back in school to support us in the school library. We visit every second Tuesday to sign books in and out. We have a quiet reading space where we read for pleasure.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This term we have enjoyed spending time with our P1 and P2 <\/span>buddies<\/span>. We have enjoyed shared reading<\/span> sessions<\/span> and supporting them <\/span>during<\/span> team games. We<\/span> have also been learning songs to sing with them at the <\/span>buddy<\/span> service.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
