P6\/7 Class update 05.10.26<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

We have settled really well into our new P6\/7 class. At the beginning of term, we spent lot of time getting to know each other through different challenges and activities. Since then, we have been focusing on settling into our new routines and taking on responsibilities around the school.<\/p>\n

Literacy<\/strong><\/p>\n

In literacy we have been focusing on creating our own information reports. We are following a new writing programme that the whole of St Columba\u2019s cluster is taking part in. To create our reports, we first research three small parts of a topic before transferring our research into a box up sheet. We then use our box up sheets to help us write our final reports. We found this challenging at first, but with lots of practice we have been creating some fantastic reports that we are very proud of!<\/p>\n

We have settled well into our reading groups and have been making good progress through our books. With Mrs Taylor, we have been using VIPERS to develop our reading comprehension skills. We have also been enjoying two class novels with Miss Donaldson and Mrs Taylor!<\/p>\n

We have continued to work on our spelling, focusing on a new spelling rule each week. We have been making a big effort to practice our words every day after lunch and at home using Showbie. The app includes our weekly spelling words as well as recordings of Miss Donaldson reading each word aloud, so we can practice our spelling tests independently. Once we are confident with a list, we can complete our spelling test and move on to the next one.<\/p>\n

Numeracy<\/strong><\/p>\n

In numeracy, we began by looking at rounding larger numbers and decimals. We worked really hard on this topic and were keen challenge ourselves with increasingly tricky numbers.<\/p>\n

We have now moved on to place value and partitioning. We impressed Miss Donaldson with our understanding of standard partitioning, so we quickly progressed to non-standard partitioning. We are now beginning to explore partitioning with decimals and will continue developing our understanding of place value throughout this topic.<\/p>\n

Following on from last year, we have also started working on STEM SPACE again. So far, we have been exploring turns on a compass and rotational symmetry. We have worked really hard and had lots of fun using the interactive resources. We will continue to work on STEM SPACE until Christmas.<\/p>\n

Other curricular areas<\/strong><\/p>\n

At the beginning of the term, we completed an artist study on Roy Lichtenstein. We explored the different techniques he used to create his artwork and even used drama to bring some of his work to life. We created lots of different art pieces and used our learning about him to write one of our information reports. During our visit to the Modern One Art gallery, some of us even got to see one of his paintings in real life (it was a lot bigger that we expected). At the art gallery, some of us created sculptures using a variety of materials, while others made pumpkins using wool. We enjoyed exploring the art gallery after our workshops.<\/p>\n

We have now started our Global Connections topic, which has already led to some really interesting discussions! We have been looking at what makes somewhere a good place to live and exploring where we are located in the world. We will continue with this topic until Christmas, learning about different places around the world and investigating what makes them good places to live. During our topic time, some of the class have been attending swimming lessons, which has been very exciting.<\/p>\n

Around school we have been taking on lots of new responsibilities. Our House and Vice Captains have been helping around the school and settling into their new roles. The Primary 7s have been helping the P1\/2s at lunch time and looking after their buddies at break times. We have also been practicing for the Buddy Service and the Primary 6s have been great role models helping out with the Primary 2s.<\/p>\n

We have already welcomed lots of visitors into our classroom to teach us about a range of different things. Police Scotland delivered a workshop about staying safe online and where we can go to if we need help. We also took part in a Transforming the Learning workshop, where we explored different ways to use our iPads to support our learning. The British Red Cross taught us some important first aid skills then returned for another workshop about facing challenges and the different ways we can overcome them.<\/p>\n
