Springfield Primary & Nursery – Newsletter August/September 2025

It is so lovely to have everyone back in the school again, after the Summer Holidays.

We welcome our new nursery & P1s who have joined us for their first experience of Springfield nursery & school life.

They are all settling in well to the routines, and lots of smiling faces show that they seem to be enjoying themselves.

Every week in class we celebrate successes and are able to share these fantastic actions/stories with the other classes digitally via seesaw.

Staff and pupils nominate individuals for “thumbs” who have gone above and beyond in their learning and for showing our school values of:

• Kindness

• Positivity

• Respect

• Honesty

Once an individual receives a “thumb” it is added to our display for the whole school to see.

Well done to everyone who has received a “thumb” so far! Which house will have the most by the end of term?

Nursery Learning

After welcoming our new and returning children into nursery, this term is focused on getting to know our learners and supporting them with nursery routines. We have had lots of interest in role-play and play dough activities around the nursery, with the children even setting up their own “pizza shop”. Babies and families have also been popular during role-play, with the children showing how nurturing and caring they are.

We look forward to meeting more of the parents and carers in the coming months and doing all we can to support our young learners at Springfield Nursery.

P1-2 Class Learning

P1-2 have had a great start to the year, it has been lovely to welcome the new primary 1’s into our classroom and, also watch the primary 2’s stepping up and giving a helping hand to our new pupils.

We have started the year with a focus on our phonics and descriptive writing and have enjoyed creating, drawing, and writing about our own monsters.

In numeracy the P1’s have been looking at counting, number formation, and shape, while the P2’s have been exploring working with larger numbers to 50 and North, South, East and West directions.

Our topic for this term is Around the World, and it has been lovely to see the children so excited to investigate different countries. We have begun our learning adventure by exploring France and Iceland and are looking forward to exploring many more countries in the coming weeks.

P3-5 Class Learning

P3–5 have made a wonderful start to the new school year. The children have settled in really well, enjoyed getting to know the new classroom layout, and have been exploring the resources with lots of enthusiasm. This term, we are focusing on building independence, communication, and teamwork skills.

Our topic this term is Explorers. We’ll be finding out about different explorers from around the world and comparing their lives to our own. The children will also be learning how to read maps, plan journeys, and understand how land and sea features can affect travel. In Literacy, we are working on writing detailed descriptions, while also practising our spelling, sentence structure, and vocabulary.
In Numeracy, we are focusing on mental maths skills, as well as place value, estimation, directions, and coordinates. I’m really looking forward to an exciting term ahead with lots of opportunities for learning and discovery!

P6-7 Class Learning

P6/7 have started the term with a fantastic learning attitude, we are all excited about what the year holds. In class, we are building our numeracy skills by focusing on multiplication and place value, while in PM Writing we are working on descriptive and discussion texts, up levelling our vocabulary, connectives, and punctuation. In Health and Wellbeing, we are learning about how different brains work, setting personal fitness goals with a positive mindset, and practising gymnastics. Our Spanish lessons are centred around classroom objects, and our topic this term is all about Space. We continue to share photos and updates daily on Seesaw, including any quick reminders. At home, you can support learning by encouraging your child to practise times tables and quick addition/subtraction, enjoy daily movement and exercise away from screens, check HAM online games, read each night (with a focus on comprehension).

Cluster Closing the Gap Teacher – Mrs Scott

Mrs Scott has been appointed as a teacher across Bell Baxter Cluster to support with Raising Attainment, working with a number of pupils across the school, with a particular focus on P4 and P7 pupils. She has been allocated to Springfield for this session. She has already started with us and has met with some of the pupils she will be working with.

Absence

If your child is absent from nursery or school, can you please ensure you contact the school by 9.30am either by email, text or telephone.

Text – 07860 004822

Telephone – 01334 659438

Attendance

Can you please make sure your child is prompt for the start of school, we still have a number of children arriving late to class, which has a knock-on effect on your child and the children and teacher in the class.

Seesaw Use

Seesaw is continuing to be used again this session, it works really well and is enjoyed by teachers, parents and the children in nursery and school. This is a great way to share and record learning as it happens in the classroom. This resource is used to involve families in your child/ren’s learning and as such, can we ask that all related chats are learning based. If you have any other queries or concerns or to notify about absences please direct these to the

School office – 01334 659438

Groupcall text 07860 004822

or by email on springfieldfieldps.enquiries@fife.gov.uk

these will be passed onto the nursery staff, class teacher or Miss Rennie.

Water Bottles

Can you please make sure that your child brings a water bottle to school every day. They will have opportunities to refill them as required throughout the day. Unless you have an arrangement due to medical reasons with the school, water bottles should only contain water.

School Lunches

Can we please remind parents to pre-order and/or discuss available meal choices with your child/ren before they come to school. Children can still pre-order in school with their teacher in the morning, however some children are not liking what is available. This helps with the smooth running of the ordering process in the morning and avoids unnecessary upset and phone calls home

Magic Breakfast

The breakfast café provides a free breakfast to any primary age child who attends the school. The Breakfast Café runs between 8.15am and 8.50am each school day. The last order time for food is 8.40am, no food will be issued after this time as cleaning will begin. Children can go outside to the playground at 8.50am or before to play unsupervised, as would be the case for other children who may arrive at school early. It is important to note that the Breakfast Café is not childcare. This means that the staff involved serve food to the children, they are not responsible for looking after the children during this breakfast time. Any cases of unacceptable behaviour by thechildren, whilst at Breakfast Café or in the playground after, will not be tolerated, and may result in your child being excluded from this service. Parents/Carers are very welcome to attend with your child/ren.

Healthy Snacks

As a Health Promoting School please support us by giving your child/ren a healthy snack/lunch option. Sometimes children can come to school with inappropriate/sugary items for snack and also before school. Can we please ask that you have a conversation with your child/ren to make sure they are not purchasing these at the shop, without parental knowledge, before school. By doing this it will help with your child’s concentration level throughout the school day. No large bags of crisps, packets of biscuits, bars of chocolate, sugary sweets should be brought for snack, these types of items will be removed from children to be returned at the end of the day. Fruit can be offered as a substitute if snack is inappropriate or has been forgotten.

Rag Bag Donations

Our textile recycling bin in the school playground raised £250.70 last session. Thank you for all your clothing

Traffic

A reminder: Can we please ask all parents/carers to park away from the school and walk their children to school, this will avoid traffic congestion and any potential accidents from occurring. Please can we ask parents to avoid parking at Tarvit Terrace for parking as it is becoming heavily congested and therefore unsafe.

Indoor Shoes

Please can you ensure that your child/ren have a change of indoor shoes. Increasingly children are not wearing appropriate footwear e.g. boots/wellies within the classroom.

Head Lice

Can you please remember to check your child/ren’s head regularly for head lice. If there is evidence of head lice, it is important to start treatment as soon as possible. Children with head lice infection should continue to attend school or nursery as long as treatment has started. To help prevent re-occurrence it is advised that children with long hair have it tied back

Toys etc. from home.

Can we please remind you that children should not be bringing toys, teddies or valuable items from home into School, this causes disruption in the class and the playground or may be lost or damaged.

PE

Children can wear their PE clothing to school on the below days. Can we ask that all PE clothing matches the school uniform colours.

Please note – No crop tops, vest tops, sleeveless tops, sequined colourful clothing, no slogans or pictures or heavy branded items should be worn to school at any time.

P1-2 = PE Tuesday and Wednesday

P3-5 = PE Tuesday and Thursday

P6-7 = PE Monday and ThursdayBikes and scooters in the playground

Bikes and Scooters in the Playground

Children have been asked to put their scooters and bikes into the bike cage and are not permitted to ride these in the playground before or after school – they have been asked to walk them out of the playground for safety. The Breakfast Club children are still permitted to use their scooters and bikes until approx. 8.50 when parents and children start to enter the playground. Please can children be reminded of the importance of wearing a helmet.

Important Uniform Reminder

We are delighted to see so many smart pupils, in school uniform colours. As you are aware, we take a great deal of pride in our school uniform and the sense of pride and identity that this gives us. We think it is important for the pupil’s PE kit to also be seen as part of their school uniform Therefore, we would ask that PE clothes follow the school uniform colours.
