{"id":996,"date":"2024-07-11T14:25:03","date_gmt":"2024-07-11T13:25:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/fi\/play\/?page_id=996"},"modified":"2024-07-11T16:40:13","modified_gmt":"2024-07-11T15:40:13","slug":"literacy","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/fi\/play\/curriculum\/how\/literacy\/","title":{"rendered":"Literacy"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"text-align: center\"><span id=\"text_pO31U2ogUZ_\">Literacy can be loosely defined as, \u201cthe ability to read and write\u201d (Tsao, 2008) and Play defined as \u201cvoluntary engagement in enjoyable activities.\u201d <\/span><\/h2>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center\"><span id=\"text_pO31U2ogUZ_\">Therefore it is apparent that literacy skills may evolve naturally during play for young children. <\/span><span id=\"text_83Eeu6XQx23\">It is our job to plan for, scaffold and extend this learning through our planned play experiences.<\/span><\/h2>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>Workshop for literacy<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p id=\"paragraph_7yaeIO_7wy8\" dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left\"><span id=\"text_dk9bzFsUU_2\" class=\"\">Workshop for Literacy (WfL) is an effective approach adopted by Fife, for teaching core literacy skills, in which essential learning activities are embedded in current class topics and themes, thus ensuring that learning is stimulating and purposeful. <\/span><span id=\"text_v3Ix_fERJf3\" class=\"\">At it&#8217;s core there is:<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"paragraph_XkaeIOU6wy8\" dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left\"><span id=\"text_8_-emxzfCiC\" class=\"TextBodyEmph color_TextEmph\">Daily opportunities <\/span><span id=\"text_Lt_emxjfCiC\" class=\"\">for the development of essential skills<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"paragraph_kdaeIOE6wy8\" dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left\"><span id=\"text_2wr7DksmQF7\" class=\"TextBodyEmph color_TextEmph\">Focussed contextual observation<\/span><span id=\"text_REs7DkcnQF7\" class=\"\"> and assessment, using the support documentation, to inform <\/span><span id=\"text_e7s7DkMnQF7\" class=\"TextBodyEmph color_TextEmph\">responsive learning and teaching <\/span><span id=\"text_fbr7Dk6mQF7\" class=\"\">opportunities which reflect the needs of all our learners.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"paragraph_JNbeIO_8wy8\" dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left\"><span id=\"text_XINELlETII2\" class=\"\">Using an <\/span><span id=\"text_kBNELl_TII2\" class=\"TextBodyEmph color_TextEmph\">engaging stimulus text <\/span><span id=\"text_7WNELlkTII2\" class=\"\">to motivate learners in different contexts and developing essential skills for life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"paragraph_WGbeIOk7wy8\" dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left\"><span id=\"text_EwuGuWLzdN-\" class=\"\">Developing learners\u2019 skills through <\/span><span id=\"text_11vGuWbzdN-\" class=\"TextBodyEmph color_TextEmph\">meaningful contexts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"paragraph_j9beIOU7wy8\" dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left\"><span id=\"text_KQgjr2KyJy-\" class=\"TextBodyEmph color_TextEmph\">Skills and strategies are made explicit. <\/span><span id=\"text_XJgjr24yJy-\" class=\"\">Learners talk about their learning and can transfer skills and strategies across curricular areas.
