This should include understanding of the world and Scotland\u2019s place in it and understanding of the environment.<\/li>\n<li>A senior phase which provides opportunity for study for qualifications and other planned opportunities for developing the four capacities.<\/li>\n<li>Opportunities for developing skills for learning, skills for life and skills for work<\/li>\n<li>Opportunities to achieve to the highest levels they can through appropriate personal support and challenge<\/li>\n<li>Opportunities to move into positive and sustained destinations beyond school.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All staff have a responsibility to build our pupil\u2019s capacity to become<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Successful learners<\/li>\n<li>Confident Individuals<\/li>\n<li>Responsible Citizens<\/li>\n<li>Effective Contributors<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Staff knowledge and understanding of the curriculum and a collegiate approach to developing experiences and outcomes in our school context will underpin development. This in turn will provide teaching and learning of the highest quality for all the pupils attending schools in the Glenrothes Cluster.<\/p>\n<p>Our <strong>Vision<\/strong> then is \u201cImproving life chances for all\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Our <strong>Values<\/strong> that will take us there are<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Compassion<\/li>\n<li>Ambition<\/li>\n<li>Respect<\/li>\n<li>Integrity<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And our aims reflect our values.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Glenrothes Cluster aims<\/strong>:-<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To ensure pupils achieve their full potential in literacy, numeracy and other basic skills<\/li>\n<li>To have a clear focus on excellence in learning and teaching<\/li>\n<li>To provide real contexts for learning and link learning to support pupils\u2019 understanding of the world around them<\/li>\n<li>To empower everyone to work together and learn from each other<\/li>\n<li>To ensure continuity and progression for all pupils using effective assessment<\/li>\n<li>To have respect for and value other people and their ideas and opinions<\/li>\n<li>To recognise their own culture and have a sense of identity while being aware of the multicultural world in which we live.<\/li>\n<li>To develop the key personal qualities of resilience, perseverance and adaptability<\/li>\n<li>To encourage lifelong learning and build ambition to ensure positive destinations for our young people<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Principles of Curriculum Design<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The seven principles of curriculum design are intended as features which apply at all stages of learning.<\/p>\n<p>These principles are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Challenge and enjoyment<\/li>\n<li>Breadth<\/li>\n<li>Progression<\/li>\n<li>Depth<\/li>\n<li>Personalisation and choice<\/li>\n<li>Coherence<\/li>\n<li>Relevance<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Organising Learning<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><u>A positive and inclusive ethos is crucial to the delivery of education<\/u><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Shared values and sense of community<\/li>\n<li>Climate of respect and trust<\/li>\n<li>Open positive supportive relationships<\/li>\n<li>Modelling behaviours which promote effective learning and well being<\/li>\n<li>Sense of shared ownership<\/li>\n<li>Contribution of children<\/li>\n<li>Decision making<\/li>\n<li>Developing partnerships<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We will deliver experiences that develop our values and principles through:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>Active and experiential learning<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Independent and collaborative learning<\/li>\n<li>Structured play with the child at the centre<\/li>\n<li>Problem solving through investigating and exploring<\/li>\n<li>Citizenship and our place in society locally and globally<\/li>\n<li>Enterprising Learning &amp; Teaching<\/li>\n<li>Creativity and Thinking skills<\/li>\n<li>Understanding of Sustainable Development<\/li>\n<li>Learning about the world of work<\/li>\n<li>Exposure to other languages and culture<\/li>\n<li>Engagement in STEM<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Supporting all our pupils to become literate and numerate will be a key factor.\u00a0 This will have implications for the organisation of learning:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Across the whole school developing literacy and numeracy skills will be a priority and the balance of the curriculum will reflect this<\/li>\n<li>Collaboration, participation and peer learning will be embedded and time will be taken to support our pupils to learn, practise and become active learners<\/li>\n<li>Opportunities to embed literacy and numeracy in all curriculum areas will be a priority. Real and relevant context will support this.<\/li>\n<li>Teachers will be explicit about the use of literacy and numeracy skills in different contexts to underpin our pupils\u2019 understanding and enable pupils to transfer skills to other curricular areas.<\/li>\n<li>At all stages this should be linked to skills for life, learning and skills for work<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The curriculum may be taught through discrete subjects but pupils\u2019 experience must be relevant and contextualised:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Language (including 2+1)<\/li>\n<li>Numeracy<\/li>\n<li>Mathematics<\/li>\n<li>Health and Wellbeing<\/li>\n<li>Social Subjects<\/li>\n<li>Sciences<\/li>\n<li>Technologies<\/li>\n<li>Expressive Arts<\/li>\n<li>RME<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Planning<\/strong> should encourage participation by, as well as being responsive to, the learner, who can and should influence and contribute to the process.<\/p>\n<p>Consideration will be given to the way we plan.\u00a0 Studies will be planned collaboratively with pupils and at this stage of planning; learning should be linked to the 4 capacities.\u00a0 Long term planning will be broader and more flexible.\u00a0 Short term planning will reflect what is happening in the class. Ongoing evaluations will allow learners to influence the process.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Assessment and Achievement<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The four lenses (Professional Judgement, Moderation, External Assessment, Progress Assessment) are the basis from which we assess all learners. Assessment is for Learning principles and the supporting strategies will continue to be used as a key tool in assessing the effectiveness of learning and teaching in our schools.<\/p>\n<p>Recognising and tracking achievement and success in learning is crucial.\u00a0 The Glenrothes Cluster believes personal achievement provides children and young people with a sense of satisfaction and helps build motivation, resilience and confidence.\u00a0 The experiences and outcomes include opportunities for a range of wider achievement in the classroom and beyond.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stages of Learning and Transition<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The experiences and outcomes outlined in the curriculum framework are grouped into five levels.\u00a0 These are<\/p>\n<p>Early\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Nursery to the end of Primary <strong>1<\/strong> for most children<\/p>\n<p>First\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Primary 2 to the end of Primary <strong>4<\/strong> for most children<\/p>\n<p>Second\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Primary 5 to the end of Primary <strong>7<\/strong> for most children<\/p>\n<p>Third\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Secondary <strong>1<\/strong> for most children<\/p>\n<p>Fourth\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Secondary <strong>3<\/strong> for most children<\/p>\n<p>We aim to provide effective transition arrangements for every one of our pupils at all stages and particularly from Nursery to P1 and P6 to S1.<\/p>\n<p>This will ensure that there is<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Continuity of learning<\/li>\n<li>Continuity of teaching and learning approaches<\/li>\n<li>Support for learners to adopt and adapt to change<\/li>\n<li>Good communication, with effective continuity of curricular programmes to support progression and coherence.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Partnerships<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We will continue to work closely with partners in our community through:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cluster working<\/li>\n<li>Collaboration with appropriate outside agencies<\/li>\n<li>Linking with parents and their work\/life experiences<\/li>\n<li>Linking with voluntary organisations both locally and nationally<\/li>\n<li>Making links with other schools, colleges and local businesses<\/li>\n<li>Linking learning to the world of work and the wider global community<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 Glenrothes Cluster Rationale \u00a0Towards a Curriculum Rationale Glenrothes Cluster endorses the following documents which were used to develop our policy rationale, Building the Curriculum series, Towards a Curriculum Rationale and Journey to Excellence.
