Week beginning 4th December 2023

Hello everyone, we hope you have had a great week at Newport Nursery. Here is a look at what we have been up to this week…

Our children have been very creative in a number of ways as they prepare for our christmas enterprise project where we will be selling decorative cushions, tree decorations, christmas keyrings, reindeer food and festive playdough packs.

Our nursery enterprise project contains:

Reindeer food – £1

Tree decoration £1

Snowman Keyring £1

Decorative cushion £2

Festive playdough packs £1.50

Sophie and Isla also got creative as they made pet toys! They used paper, string and feathers to make cat and dog toys which inspired others to join in and create their own.

Timothy has mastered the art of envelope making! Timothy worked out how to make an envelope as there wasn’t one big enough to fit his card in and created lots of them for his peers to use.

We all helped to put up the christmas tree and place the decorations where we wanted. Some children helped with the lights and some wanted to put on the tinsel! Cammy chose to put the angel on top of the tree!

We have been opening our advent calander each day at nursery! We worked out what number came before and after the date and counted out how many doors were open so far and left to open. Every child will have a turn at opening the doors as we make our way down the register!

We had another great forest session where we did lots of exploring, some children built dens, helped to look after the fire and even created more stories! Isla created a story about elves and used her peers as inspiration!

Chloe has been showcasing her mark making skills as she creates pictures for her peers of barbie and Ken, singing along as she draws 😄

children have been exploring completing puzzles on the whiteboard as they select what picture they wanted to do. Children were able to challenge themselves as they decided if they wanted a background picture to help them complete it or not.

Other children chose to make symmetrical pictures where they had to complete the missing side. There was also a game where children explored their numeracy skills and had to order the amounts and match them to the correct number. The children really showcased their abilities!

Elyn has been creating her own story for the first time this week as she reads her story out loud with an adult. She named her story The Candy Cane. Well done Elyn what a fantastic story!

Charlotte also spent a lot of time creating a wonderful story called The Boy and the Girl on Christmas Eve. What confident reading Charlotte!

Carrying on from the childrens interests in stories, the children took a walk up to the school library where they chose a range of stories to bring back and share with their peers.

Reminders:

  • The nursery sing along is on Friday 15th December
  • Nursery christmas party is on Tuesday 19th December

1st December 2023

Wow here we are in December!

Happy Friday Everyone 🙂

Well what another busy week we’ve had in nursery.

Lots of puzzles and jigsaws this week. Learning to work together and cooperate. Checking that all the puzzles and games are complete, following instructions and using our knowledge of shapes and positional language.

Some of the children have been practicing their numeracy skills with Miss McKenzie and demonstrating their knowledge of time, seasons and months. Lots of quality observations for our PLJs.

Art Area:

We have been doing some collaborative painting this week, with some of the boys experimenting with colour mixing and working together to create works of art.
Oran discovered how to make secondary colours and Christian & Alex identified how to change the colour shades. Great Job 🙂

Learning Wall:

Lots of the children have been using the wooden characters to create their own stories at the learning wall area. Showing their understanding of the different ways to create and tell stories. The children are still getting so much from the learning wall topic and it is fantastic to see them use there knowledge to further their own learning.

Christmas/Winter Activities:

This week marks the start of our Christmas/winter activities in nursery. With “Festive Friday “ creating a winter scene in our art area, lots of melted snowman pictures. Mrs Wilson and the children creating snowflakes for everyone to use as a winter snowy scenes, Mrs Cameron made us a postbox for our writing area, where the children have been using different Christmas themed stationery to make lists, letters and pictures to post, and the start of our Christmas Enterprise projects with Miss McKenzie ! The children have been learning some new skills such as sewing, and practicing problem solving, creative ideas and following complex instructions. The children have excelled 🎄

St Andrews Day

We had porridge and berries for snack, lots of Scottish music, and Scottish Country dancing outdoors, researched Loch Ness & Nessie and explored our lovely St Andrews display.

Reminders:

Festive Fridays 8th and 15th December -children can wear Christmas T-shirts/jumpers

Parent Chats start Monday 4th December

Christmas Enterprise- the items the children have been busy making will be available to sell in the coming days, funds raised from this goes towards resources for the nursery children. More on this soon

Winter clothes – Now that the weather has turned even colder, we are asking that children come dressed for the weather, particularly for forest kindergarten. We are out for a good portion of the day and the children can get quite cold, quite quickly.

Have a lovely weekend everyone and we will see you all next week for more festive fun.

Newport Nursery week commencing 20.11.23

This week learning is… Exploring, Predicting, Being Curious, Literacy, Mathematics, Sharing, Self-Esteem, Creativity, Motor Skills, Turn Taking, Technology, Outdoor Learning and Problem Solving.

Happy Friday everyone. What a quick week this has been, and what a busy week the  with all the learning and fun that the all the children have been involved with.

Outside the children have  been showing off their skills to participate in group games, sharing ideas and following the rules of the game. Duck, Duck, Moose seemed quite popular. While others enjoyed showing their decorating skills, acting out the roles of painters and decorators  that incorporated a range of different tools needed to do various jobs.

Some children continued their interest in a bear hunt,  participated in using the Bee bot to programme a set of instructions to move to the different areas relating to the story, such as first they needed to go to the grass,….. then to the cave. The children had previously created images of these to be placed in different areas for the Bee bot to go to. They then used skills to estimate how many spaces it needed to get to the pictures. They used a range of directional  and positional language to describe its journey.

Some more children expressed a wish to revisit the Gummy bear experiment,  with lots of discussions arose to describe, compare and predict. We discussed thoughts on what they water might do, and about the time needed to see if any changes would occur. This lead to making jelly for their snack on Tuesday with the children engaged in a voting method to decide on the flavours.

“I think it will change colour”

“i think it will disappear”

All these activities are expanded from the children’s  learning interest in stories and books. These will be added to the current learning wall which is still a major interest with the children. Some children have been showing an interest in non fiction books such as the Above and below, while others revisited a previous experience of the birds outside using an app to monitor which birds are lose by. They gathered images to create a tally chart to record which birds were close by.

In the forest this week the children enjoyed a hot cheese and tomato pizza along with hot chocolate drink or water to keep their bodies warm especially with the weather we had that day. Lots of imaginative play occurred with the children engaging well with each other sharing ideas. Some children decided to worked together to tidy up the wooded area piling up all the fallen leaves and sticks. A group created their own fire area discussing and recalling how to be safe around the fire.

We had a lovely visited from a couple of P6 students who came to visit the nursery to give a talk and a power point  all about being safe on the roads. This links well into the Road Safety campaign in the school and the nursery demonstrated a good understanding from their walks back from the forest on being safe around the roads.

On Friday the children have been very busy starting their journey of their Christmas enterprise project, showing their creative and developing skills using their hand and eye co-ordination. Over the coming weeks more information on this project will be passed onto you.

Good evening everyone!

What a busy week we have all experienced.

On Monday, our Christmas interest has most definitely begun with an announcement linked with a home experience. ‘I’ve got Christmas music in my car.’ ‘I know Jingle Bells but I don’t know the other Christmas songs.’

This led to learning about;

*how to research Christmas songs using the iPad (technical issues) then the PC

*listening to, watching and participating in Christmas song exploration on the Smartboard

https://youth.be/9iLcWuxIQ4?feature=shared

*sharing our likes and dislikes relating to Christmas songs

*confidently ask and answer questions about our beliefs and family traditions…’What do you leave out for 🎅🏽🦌🦌🦌🛷 on Christmas Eve?’ What do you put at the top of your Christmas 🎄?

*applying our technology skills to operate and play the Christmas CD in the music area

*performing Christmas songs (indoors and out) as a small group and independently demonstrating rhythm using untuned percussion instruments and sharing song words and the different versions we know

*exploring the Christmas Tree Decoration game on Topmarks (selecting, dragging, dropping, mouse control, hand eye coordination).

*apply our gross motor skills and skill of space sharing and communication to jump in puddles

*develop our skill and interest in simple coding using the Beebots (this has been generated by our Bear Hunt adventures. Through our Beebot experiences, we were learning to;

*apply our knowledge of direction to make Beebot go.

*to use the iPad to explore the Beebot app and select a range of challenges

*develop our skills in giving directional instructions

On Tuesday, we were learning to;

*🍕👍🏼🍕👎🏼display our lunch choices on a table by recording our name or drawing a picture.

*observe and discuss the weather and apply our self help skills to get appropriately dressed with waterproofs and wellyboots.

*risk assess our movements and resources in the garden.

*undertake a group Gummy Bear science activity linked with our interest in Bears (following on from We’re Going on. Bear Hunt), predicting what will happen to the sweets by Friday.

*participate as a group to share in a range of familiar and less familiar rhymes and songs shared by our special guest, ‘Reading Rabbit.’

On Wednesday, at Forest Kindergarten we were learning to;

*use some of our Signalong knowledge to share our Forest Kindergarten Charter

*continue our group interest from last week to create and use our own role play fire circle. ‘We are the teachers, you need to help us get the sticks.’ ‘We stay in the fire square and no children are allowed in this circle.’

*play a new type of Tig called ‘Toilet Tig,’ and with practice and through discussion we were able to teach others the rules of the game

*safely cook mallows over the fire, discussing our likes and dislikes

Week beginning 6th November

This week learning has been …….. discovering, researching, creating, imagining, experimenting, being responsible and helping.

We are learning to be responsible, safe and respectful. Lots of us are volunteering to help make snack, clean up our spills and practicing our tidying up skills. If we use it, we know we need to put it back. (Although we are still finding it tricky in the art area when we are busy creating masterpieces).

Winter Tidy up:

Outside this week we have been washing down the outside resources and making the garden area nice and tidy after the recent storms. We gathered buckets of warm soapy water and had fun working together as a team using our water play skills to make everything sparkly and clean.

“We’re Going On A Bear Hunt”

Carrying on from last week we have been “Going on a Bear Hunt “. Using the story to help us retell the story through role play. Showing that we are continuing to engage with our learning wall. Exploring different ways to listen to, and tell stories. Lots of rhyming, sequencing and discovering how we can act out different characters.

Outside, Mrs Wilson and some of the children created an activity where they had to “go on a bear hunt” around the garden to find all the hidden bears. SSH! Don’t tell the next person where they’re hiding! 🐻

Diwali

We are talking about and exploring Diwali this week. Looking at and researching what Diwali is and how people celebrate it.
Some of us have been drawing around our hands and designing patterns on them with different colourful beads. Lots of bright Diwali colours in the art area to inspire our pictures, paintings and creations.

We participated in discussions around what foods people enjoy during Diwali feasts and how they might celebrate.

Forest School

This week there was only a few of us. Some of us built our own campfire, gathering sticks and leaves for our fire and logs to create the fire square. Some were catching leaves as they fell from the trees, before they reached the ground. We had French toast on the fire for snack and listened to see if we recognised the birds.

Telescopes have been a big interest this week, with the children exploring different ways to make them. Sharing resources and practicing our turn taking skills, lots of negotiating and discussions. Some of us used the telescopes in our role play as pirates and some of us used them to investigate the playroom more closely.

Now that the weather has most definitely turned, we are asking that all children who attend forest on Wednesdays to come with weather appropriate layers.

Writing Table

Lots of interest in writing and practicing our new words. Sounding out each and working out which letter is needed.

Design & Build

The block area has been popular this week too, with children getting creative and designing very intricate buildings and cities! We can talk about the shapes we used and why we positioned them in certain places. Showing our understanding of shape, design and positional language.

Mrs Foulis

This week sees Mrs Foulis leaving us for pastures new. We have all enjoyed the fun and games, and we will miss you. We wish you luck in your new role ☺️

In-service Day

Friday 10th November the nursery will be closed to the children. Back to normal on Monday 13th November.

Absences

We are grateful for absences noted on Seesaw but can we ask that you also contact the school office to log them. This just ensures all absences are logged correctly.

Loose Parts

We are always in need of replenishing our loose parts in nursery. If you are out and about on walks, or are planning to recycle items, can we ask that you think of us first please 😃

Here is some of the items we are looking for:

Conkers, stones, shells, tea cups, sticks, picture frames, plates, anything you think might be of used in nursery.
We are also on the lookout for two of kitchen chairs, if anyone is getting rid of them. We are looking to develop a new area in the playroom.

Phew what a busy week!

Enjoy your weekend everyone and we’ll see you on Monday 😃

Newport Nursery week 30.11.23.

This week learning is… Exploring, Being Curious, Literacy, Mathematics, Sharing, Self-Esteem, Creativity, Motor Skills, Turn Taking, Technology, Outdoor Learning and Problem Solving.

What a busy week we have had in Nursery, lots of laughter, scares and discussions on what they will be doing and who they were going to be.

We celebrated Halloween this week we the children engaging in lots of different Halloween fun. In the art area to children engaged in creating models and pictures using a range of materials and in the block area to make a haunted house. Children engaged using the lightboard to be creative in making designs using a range of natural loose parts and coloured paper shapes. While  other children explored the clay area taking the story of Room on the broom has their inspiration to make a range of models such as a witches hat, a frog or a broom.

On Monday night the children enjoyed the Halloween disco and we had lots of the children discussing and showing the adults their dance moves. Well what did the children not do on Tuesday. In the snack area some children helped to make the monster shaped sandwiches. They choose jam or cheese and enjoyed cutting out the shapes using their counting skills to count out up to 18 on both plates. They discuss that they could make 2 sandwiches out of the slices. They helped to cut out the witches fingers from the cucumber and names the tomatoes has eyeballs. The children also enjoyed craving out the pumpkin with the adult, showing skills to discuss using tools safely  and listen to  the advice from the adult to take turns.

Over the week some children have been extending their creative skills and working with an adult to make fairy wings that link to characters from stories or films and extending this interest to their imaginative play. This has evolved over the whole of the week with more creative minds to use a range of resources such has wooden blocks being made into mobile phones.

Due to forest being cancelled the children enjoyed making pizza for snack and on Thursday they made milkshake using a range of berries and honey and milk. They used a blender which led to a discussion on how it worked. What it needed to work recognising the need for electricity which started a topic on other appliances that needed this source from around the setting to their homes.

The Learning wall area is still on going with lots of children engaging in writing their own storybooks either using the writing area or the more cosy area by the learning wall. One child recalled the activity at the forest linking it to the story of Going on a bear hunt. They worked with the adult to  search for an activity on this topic, finding a bear hunt to do outside. This lead to doing some research on polar bears and create their own image.

A group of children went on a walk after showing an interest in birds outside. We used an app that can record bird song and immediately identify exactly which bird is making the sound. The children were able to listen to instructions and help one another identify and listen out for birds. Once the picture popped onto the app when the birds were singing, the children could see what bird it was and shared with one another what its name was and things the6 knew about the bird including what colours it was and how big it might be. Children then shared their learning and interests with family and peers on return. Children have again showed interest today in birds where we will start to collect data on how many of each bird we see/hear 🐦 The children found a robin, common chaffinch and a magpie yesterday and expressed their excitement for finding these!

Some children recalled the yoga sessions that they had experience so they cleared an area to do this safely while the adult put some calming Reiki music for these to move , balance and stretch to relax. Afterwards they discussed confidently that they felt better and calm.

Week beginning 23rd October 2023

Hello everyone! We hope you have had lots of fun in the holidays and are excited to be back at nursery! Here is a look at what we have been up to this week…..

Some children have been speaking about Halloween and making requests about songs they would like to sing and dance to. Children requested to have the Halloween dressing up and books which nearly every child engaged in.

Children have been having a go at making pom poms today! They all persevered and showed good resilience. The children chose their own colours and threaded the card and only had help to tie a knot at the end.

Children have been engaged in a lot of craft activities such as cutting and sticking to make their own paper shapes and making clay models.

A group of children were inspired by the haunted house decoration and wanted to make their own in the block area! The children worked together to create the house being careful what shapes they needed and drew their own ghosts and zombies!

Some children wanted to make their own skeletons and were able to get help to draw around their bodies to make a life size one! This encouraged discussion about the bones in our bodies.

Outside, some children created their own shelter where they invited others to join a tea party! This tea party included table service, cupcakes and lavender tea. There was also 2 DJ’s! The children showed great team work and communication skills as they shared their ideas with one another.

We had another great forest session where we did lots of exploring. Children went on a bear hunt, made their own tree from strings and berries and also toasted their own marshmallows on the fire where they decided how toasty they wanted them to be!

Flynn has been developing his number skills as he writes numbers on a grid in the garden with an adult.

Timothy has been very independent this week helping his peers and he adults out without being asked. When Timothy notices and area needs some tidying he will do what he can to make the area look lovely again.

Sophie and Cora were interested in what noise their cereal was making this morning…..”Can you hear it Cora? Snap, crackle and pop!”

Reminders:

  • Please remember to send a spare change of clothing with your child to nursery as well as a jacket as it is now getting colder and our children love playing in all weathers!

Have a great weekend! See you next week!

The Newport Nursery Team

Last week of Term!

Well here we are at the October holidays!

We’ve had another busy week.

Some of the children have been exploring the various games on the Ipads, particularly the drawing games with them accessing the different mark making functions. This encouraged us to practice the art of negotiations and turn taking. 🙂

“Molly’s Circus”

As part of the children’s learning wall activities we were delighted to read a particularly special story book brought in by one of the children. Sophie brought in a book called “Molly’s Circus” which was written and illustrated by her Aunt Esther. The children thoroughly enjoyed engaging with it and talking about the beautiful illustrations. Thank you for sharing this with your nursery friends.

Woodwork creations

The children have been exploring the workbench area more this past week, with lots of independent learning and emerging resilience. We’ve had some excellent examples of items crafted from their imaginations, from statues, pillars, wands and even an Xbox controller!

Recycling

The children have learned about what it means to recycle. Some of us knew about recycling and could explain to their peers during discussions. We talked about the different kinds of recycling items and practiced with some new recycling games. The children followed the rules of the games well and some chose to continue independently.
We will be continuing with this after the holidays as the children wish to find out more.

Cycling to School

This week, like the rest of the school, some of us have been cycling and scooting to school. We used our excellent listening skills to listen to the JRSO (Junior Road Safety Officers) who handed out some prizes and talked to us about using reflective stickers to keep safe.

Well Done Everyone 🙂

Learning Wall:

We’ve had lots of interaction and quality learning through our learning wall about stories. All the children have added to our wall and been an active part of the discussions about our favourite stories, characters and books. Some of us have made our own story books and some have collaborated with friends to create books. What a great range of interesting stories!

At the forest

This week we were creating our own games/stories, swinging on the tree swing, drawing pictures with charcoal, weaving with branches and string, collecting pine cones and sticks for the fire, eating quesadillas and singing songs. What a busy day, we almost didn’t notice the rain!

Harvest Together Time

Today we joined the rest of the school in the hall for the Harvest Together Time. We all practiced active listening and the nursery ladies said we sat very well. We listened to all the classes telling stories and singing songs and joined in where we could.

Reminders:

* As of today (6th October) we are on holiday for two weeks, we will see you  all on Monday 23rd October.

Newport Nursery week 25/09/2023

This week learning is… Exploring, Being Curious, Literacy, Mathematics, Sharing, Self-Esteem, Creativity, Motor Skills, Turn Taking, Technology, Outdoor Learning and Problem Solving.

This week in Nursery has been very different so this will be a short newsletter covering the Monday and Friday.

On Monday some children were busy designing and creating a tower using a range of blocks and loose parts. They showed skills to negotiate and problem solve a very wobbly tower. Whilst outside a group of  children engaged playing team games such has What’s the time Mr Wolf. They used a range of numbers and used the correct language to describe time using past and o’clock.

Inside a group of children engaged with the adults to discuss the features of books. They showed a good recognition of the author, illustrator, the blurb even mentioning the spine of the book. They discussed the start of where to read that supported their own voices.

We enjoyed the company of Mrs Laing this morning and the children explored being very crafty with skills that promoted hand and eye co-ordination. This interest arose from a child that spent time being very crafty over the days away from the nursery. The skills shown were sewing, threading, stuffing, using scents etc to create cushions. Lots of discussions, sharing ideas and to help each other to problem solve.

Lots of interest shown in the new areas with children engaging with  a range of figures and puppets too.

Week beginning 18th September 2023

Hello everyone, we hope you have had a lovely week at nursery and have enjoyed your first forest session of the year! Here is a look at what we have been doing this week…

Groups of children have been showing an interest in group games this week as children have been inviting their peers to play. They have been exploring adding and subtracting as well as a memory game.

Sophie requested that we have hot chocolate for snack as it would be nice and warm. Sophie helped Miss McKenzie to prepare and make the hot chocolate as she discussed experiences at home with her mum making hot chocolate.

Children have been expressing their feelings in a really positive way this week. At snack, children spoke to one another and said “this is really delicious, I really like this snack” “wow these are the best hot dogs ever” “I really liked the forest didn’t you? It was so fun!”. Children have been keen to share their likes and dislikes with one another in a range of situations.

It was our very first session at the forest this week and everyone had a really positive experience. Children explored all areas of the forest and were able to take risks and communicate well. We had hot dogs for snack which went down a treat as children expressed their love for the hot dogs and forest experience as a whole.

Children have been showing an interest in writing where they are using a range of media to mark make. Some children chose to write in diaries or create their own pictures based on real life experiences.

Eli and Chloe were inspired by Oran and created their own music using tin foil! They blew into the foil which created a funny sound!

Hubert and Timothy have been working together as they created a picture in art using the paints and painting easel.

Oran and Elyn had taken their yoga moves they had learnt and used these in their play outside this week.

Some children chose to look at their PLJ’s and helped to add in photos of themselves into the right sections!

This week we explored the story of the gingerbread man and used the playdough area to extend our learning from the story. We used cinnamon to mix into our playdough mixture and used the story to read along as we rolled out the dough and cut out our own gingerbread men shapes.

Children worked together in the block area as they used their communication skills to build a castle! They recognised each others abilities and praised each other for the good ideas that they had.

Fraser has been exploring facial expressions and how to capture these using the iPad. Fraser was able to learnt how to use different controls as he flipped the camera and pressed the capture button.

A group of children have been exploring rhyming through a matching game as they have to listen and look at the words to see what rhyming box it goes into.

Thank you to everyone so far who has handed in a learning wall sheet to put on our learning wall! You all have fantastic ideas and have done amazing with your mark making 😄

We had another yoga session to end our week as we spoke about our feelings and emotions. Children shared their own moves and were even able to roll away their mats and were inspired to help others too! New children joined in for the session and some just chose to watch to see what the session was all about 😄
