Week beginning 6th January 2025

It’s our first week back at nursery and we have had lots of fun together as we learn. Here is a look at what we have been up to…

Groups of children have been exploring their mark making skills through different media’s as they look at mixing colours, pattern making and detail work.

Children have been using the loose parts in the home corner to help extend their play as Fraser uses wool for spaghetti and conkers for bolognese.

Groups of children have been exploring their numeracy skills as they use the coloured vehicles to make groups of colours or type of vehicle and looking at adding collections together to get a total sum.

Children have been extending their literacy skills through use of books and story cards to look at story sequencing and developing their language.

Leo and Brodie were investigating the ice outside as they discussed how ice is formed and how it feels when they touch it.

Children have been using ribbons to explore rhythm and movement as they dance along to a song on the whiteboard with their peers.

Children have also been using the wooden song spoons to sing along to songs together. The children’s favourite was 5 currant buns and they used money to give to one another during the song to show an awareness of buying and selling.

Following along with this, children also set up their own shop area to use money and create prices for items where they explored simple addition of items and making simple amounts using coins as they identified the different coin types.

Some children explored using the wooden number slices where they ordered numbers 0-20, identified a missing number and also a number in between 2 given numbers. The children showed independence and also asked for support when they knew they needed it.

Children have been continuing their interest in numbers as they explore matching quantities to the number. The children were keen to join in and shared their learning with others.

Reminders:

  • The weather can change suddenly and we would ask that you wrap your children up super cosy for nursery with gloves, scarves, hats etc for outside play as the children can play outside in all weathers.
  • Peep and bookbug sessions will continue again at the end of the month and we will keep you updated with the dates when we have these. These will both continue on a Thursday morning.
  • We will update you with the forest start date when we have it.

Have a great weekend! ☺️

Newport Nursery week of 9.12.24

Hello everyone, we hope you have had a great week! Here is a look at what we have been up to in nursery…..

This week learning is… Exploring, Predicting, Being Curious, Literacy, Mathematics, Sharing, Self-Esteem, Creativity, Motor Skills, Turn Taking, Technology, Outdoor Learning and Problem Solving.

This week in Nursery the children have been very busy further developing their current enterprise project creating lots of play dough poop. They used non standard tools to measure the ingredients, they used skills to mix and discussed the reasons why we needed to use heat to bring the dough together. They added spices for  the gingerbread man  that stimulated a discussion on their likes or dislikes whilst using their senses  to describe the other flavourings of chocolate or peppermint.. They all followed the different processes of manipulating the dough into the equal sized balls, creating groups of four. Then the bagging stage, adding the  labels next. This activity inspired others to join in, showing a growing understanding of waiting their turn and being able to do the next ones.

This lead to questions being asked about reindeers.. “Do reindeer fly?

“What do reindeer eat?

“Where do reindeer live?

This will be taken forward and then displayed onto our current learning wall.

Today the children extended their learning interest in reindeers in doing some research to find the answers to their questions, and enjoyed watching a short video that explained how Santa’s sleigh.

“They eat green things like grass and leaves”

“They live in the cold”

“Santa’s sleigh has power”

Throughout the week the children have been involved in a range of Christmas  themed activities such as developing  their writing skills in writing out a last minute Christmas wish list. They also recalled the need to sign their name at the bottom. They have also been creative in making cards for a special person that incorporated their own ideas on what a certain Christmas theme item looked like, bringing their experiences seen of these. We had a lovely Christmas Book Bug session with Miss Nelson and Mrs Laing to which all the children attended and enjoyed singing songs and listening to some Christmas stories.

Following on from their interest in the play dough making a large snowman dough poop with sparkles was made for the children to enjoy developing their manipulation skills to create a range of shapes and designs. This activity promoted social interaction with all to experience sharing their thoughts on the texture. smell anda discussion on the weather conditions linking it to the snow and ice. They also discussed a range of animals that live in these conditions, to which we have more research to do on a few popular animals. This will be researched over the next few days to be added to the wall.

Outside the children have been making the most of the dry weather incorporating a range of team games, and role situations using a range of loose parts to further develop the play. Some children were using skills to investigate speed. One child was using a bike and the other was running and they both came to discover that the bike was the fastest.

Although we didn’t make the forest this week we still had lots of fun down the bottom garden with the fire to toas marshmellows and make a smore along with a hot chocolate. The children enjoyed exploring the frost on the ground investigating the ice in the tyres, to climbing trees.

Week beginning 2nd December

Hello everyone, we hope you have had a great week, here is a look at what we have been up to this week….

Flora made her very own snowman in the sand tray. Floral used the loose parts to add features to her snowman for arms and mark making buttons, eyes and a nose.

The children had a great time in the garden for our forest session yesterday. We explored a range of movement skills using loose parts. Luke used a stick and created his own drum using a boat to tap on.

Robin and Cammy were experimenting with some ice and how it was melting. Cammy said “I’m changing this into water”.

A group of children used clay to create a range of different models and structures. The children inspired one another through their imaginative use of loose parts. The children then made their own signs to go with the models to show what they had made.

A group of children used the musical instruments to play along to a range of Christmas songs that we were singing. They were working on keeping the beat and a rhythm.

A small group made their own motorhome using loose parts outside after asking questions to find out more. The boys shared the resources well and shared their ideas between one another.

A group of children took part in an intentional promotion which introduced matching coins, making amounts and identifying coins. We did this in preparation for buying and selling and exploring money when selling our enterprise project.

Children have been role playing being the ladies in the nursery as they plan and take part in a gym session. They used clip board and pencils to write down their ideas and used resources in the garden to make a gym session plan.

Children have been using the blocks to explore measuring in different ways. We tried using tape measures first and then used our hands to count out home many hands it took to get from top to bottoms.

Children have started to sell their Christmas enterprise projects and are very excited to share these with families. We will have these on sale up until the end of term to try and raise money for resources chosen by the children.

Newport Nursery week of the 18.11.24

Hello everyone, we hope you have had a great week! Here is a look at what we have been up to in nursery…..

This week learning is… Exploring, Predicting, Being Curious, Literacy, Mathematics, Sharing, Self-Esteem, Creativity, Motor Skills, Turn Taking, Technology, Outdoor Learning and Problem Solving.

This week we have seen lots of children developing their own learning through asking lots of questions demonstrating skills to research, recall the new learning and create their own images of these animals. This is now creating a fabulous learning  wall. of lots of different animals being researched. We have had questions being shared from their homes such as chickens, tigers, giraffe., panadas and many more such as a Mammoth. This came from one child at snack using cucumber has tusks that inspired others to talk about elephants leading onto Mammoth research.  We have had children sharing their parents favourite animals. I could keep going on, but please take time to look at the wall as you come into the nursery or take a learning sheet home to share with your child. The children have also been enjoying exploring the resources displaying skills to match and sort the animals.

Some of the questions asked…..

“How fast do tigers go?

How big are giraffes?

“What are Mammoths?.

Also this week the children have been sharing their knowledge and understanding on People who help us when we have been evaluating the learning topic.

This week we have also been promoting the forth coming St Andrews day celebration through creating a weaving pattern and looking at the different tartans available. This continues from the weaving and threading area that has recently been promoted in the setting.

At snack the children are continuing voicing their opinions on whether they liked the snack that day through a mark making experience. Hotdogs seems to be the favourite at the moment. One child enjoyed sharing his knowledge on fruit, recognising that it was healthy for him, and sugar was not. We also celebrated Alfie’s 5th birthday on Thursday and we all hope that he has a lovely day on Friday.

The children are continuing to enjoy a session of cosmic yoga each day after lunchtime and they are developing their skills to move their bodies into an array of positions.

Outside there have been opportunities to enjoy the nice cold weather sharing their thoughts on how it made them feel, what they have been noticing such as the leaves falling, jack frost and discovering what creatures are about. This week we had a visit from a pheasant whilst enjoying one of the many walks around the school ground. They have found mole hills, a beehive even a horse. On Friday whilst outside a group of children observed how the planes made wriggly lines and straight ones too which lead to sharing holiday experiences and their travel journeys. This lead onto discussing how the moon comes out during the day too. Another possible learning wall topic for outside.  This lead to the adults setting up a turf tray of cloud dough which feel and looks like snow for the children to explore and investigate.

We are also being extremely busy continuing with the nursery’s enterprise scheme making  items to sell over the coming weeks.

Some children are preparing for the Christmas period singing and playing instruments to the tune of Jingle bells having lots of fun sharing and exploring the instruments.

Newport Nursery week of the 28.10.24

Hello everyone, we hope you have had a great week! Here is a look at what we have been up to in nursery…..

This week learning is… Exploring, Predicting, Being Curious, Literacy, Mathematics, Sharing, Self-Esteem, Creativity, Motor Skills, Turn Taking, Technology, Outdoor Learning and Problem Solving.

This week we have been continuing the children’s development and understanding of celebrating various festivals, celebrations and religious beliefs looking at Halloween and Diwali. A variety of activities that encouraged children to explore and participate in whilst having lots of fun.

Outside the children experienced creating very decorative tea light holders using clay, paint and sparkles. They used skills to manipulate the clay into a shape then after listening to and looking at information from books, pictures and the internet. They discussed the texture, feel of the clay, and the shape of the holder.

Also from observing and listening to a group of children discussing a recent Halloween party that they had attended, the adult promoted an activity to create a range of Halloween themed pictures. They used a range of natural tools to create their images, sharing the resources and their ideas well with others. They were then using the correct language to describe the  different sizes created,

Whilst inside a group of children were seen exploring the Diwali pattern making area to create their own patters using a selection of coloured buttons. They were able to sequence and follow a pattern, this extended then to creating their own patterns using other methods such as pens and paint.

At the forest, the children enjoyed a hot snack  of Hot dogs or crumpets along with a hot chocolate drink afterwards. They were able to discuss how the environment had changed after noticing how many leaves were now on the floor. This lead to discussions on how the weather is changing, with some saying..

“It’s getting colder now and windy too”

“Then wind makes the leaves fall down”

We also found some mesh netting which we hung up and the children sourced a variety of natural resources such as leaves, cones, sticks and berries to create a lovely piece of art work. They were able to share their understanding of not eating the berries, recalling the need to wash their hands afterwards.

In were able to discuss how their bodies felt. the week the children enjoyed a gym session that promoted skills to jump, balance, roll, hop walk forwards and backwards using a range of large gym equipment. Afterwards they

Yesterday lots of fun and games were had from pumpkin carving and then decorating using glue, sparkles and spray paint. But I’m not too sure if the spray paint actually went onto pumpkin,   The children showed their skills to match playing Spooky Halloween bingo, to reading stories under a table covered in dark material and a torch. Lots of imaginative ghostly stories were made. A Book bug session was held and afterwards the children explored the story sack of the Room on the broom.

Today the children explored the symbolic meaning of the Poppy. They shared that a Poppy is worn to remember people who help to protect us in the wars. This led to some creating their own Poppy for the Nursery.

Week beginning 21st October 2024

We hope you had a lovely relaxing time off. Here is what we have been up to the first week back….

Children have been exploring their fine motor skills as they create their own masks using paper, wool and scissors. They only needed a little support to attach the wool and hold the paper still as they cut.

Children have been exploring weight outside as they looked at items that were heavier than others. Children have also been threading outside using straws and seeing how they can create different lengths.

Children have been exploring mark making and attempting to copy words that they need for their everyday play. They then independently used a ruler to explore how long their pictures were.

Using bottles and a range of other resources, children made their own music shakers. They then developed these using their own creative ideas by adding colours and tape to make them unique.

Children are beginning to explore Diwali and look at how others celebrate as they made their own henna designs on a hand print they drew and cut out. The children were able to discuss their own experiences with Diwali as they said about seeing something on television about it. “That’s the festival of light, they light candles and dance to music and do hand designs”.

Children have been working together to look after the nursery resources independently. Luke and Florence noticed sand in the home corner and swept it up together. “I can be the bin man” says Luke.

Children are continuing to show an interest in our learning wall topic “People who help up” as they ask to read a story about the police. From this, Rosie shared that she learned all about finger prints and how they are put on the computer to catch the bad guys. Innes showed an interest in looking at all the different sections of the book.

This week a group of children asked to make play dough. Leo asked for blue play dough as he was going to make Sonic. Through a group discussion and problem solving we decided to add blue powder paint to the play dough to create the blue colour. The group of children explored making models of numbers, shapes and animals. This led to a discussion about what animals eat and where they come from. “Giraffes eat leaves.” “We get leaves from trees” “trees grow in the ground.” This then led how to care for plants by giving them water and sunlight.

This week a group of children participated in making a “special” tray for the story sharing a shell. We worked together to create a mind map and gather ideas from the story to see what we could incorporate. Innes enjoyed looking through the story to see if we were missing any resources. Jackson, flora and Rosie enjoyed helping create the rock pool. “This is where they live” “yeah but they live in a shell”. They got creative and used instruments and a torch to create thunder and lightening in the storm. “This is the storm” Rosie and Flora enjoyed retelling the storm part or the story using the instruments and flashing of the torch. They confidently spoke about their favourite parts of the story and retold them.

This week Rosie and Sehrish demonstrated their skills to listen to a set of instructions that described size, such as tallest, smallest, medium sized then selected the correct picture.

Children have been sharing their kind and caring sides with one another as they help others around the room. Children helps others by fixing their clothing or fixing resources they noticed were broken. “It’s broken I need to fix it!”. “There you go I’ll do your cardigan for you”.
