Week beginning 1st September 2025

Hello everyone we hope you have had a great week this week, here is a look at what we have been up to…

Children have been exploring lots of songs and rhymes as they take part in small group opportunities as they use the wooden song spoons and ‘what’s in the bag’. Children chose an object from a bag and sang a song based on what the character or item was. Children have also been looking at a range of books alone and with peers to see what they can spot in the pictures and retelling the stories together.

Children are becoming more confident when taking part in lunchtime and snack routines as they collect what they need with little support and carry their tray to the table and choose who they want to sit next to.

Children have been challenging themselves with puzzles as they complete a range of different jigsaws starting off with the ones with less pieces and working their way up to 100 pieces where they delegated who would complete each area to them combine their sections together to finish the jigsaw.

Lots of new friendships are being formed as children bond over shared interests with familiar and unfamiliar peers.

We have been exploring ball games outside where children used the football to pass to one another, a target to throw beanbags at to see what number would get the most points and using the bats and balls to hit back and forward. The children took turns mark making a line next to the points each time they hit either a 20, 50 or 100.

Children have shown a keen interest in using the fire station to explore jobs in the community as they discuss firemen. There has also been men in to cut down a tree this week where children have been keen to find out about what they have to wear and how they keep safe. A child also noticed Rory our janitor with a tool box and quizzed him on what he was doing which lead to a discussion about tools they had at home and what jobs they like to help their families with.

Children have been working together to create a wonderful Christmas tree 🎄 The children had been role playing in the house that it was Christmas time so decided they needed a tree. This gave the children the opportunity to be creative and develop their fine motor skills as they weaved material in and out of the branches.

Outside the children explored the turf tray after some of children were discussing  their holidays. With a  discussion about  the beach and what they could find on a beach they worked together to gather resources to create their own beach. The children  showed respect the resources, placing these nicely into the sand and water.

“We need animals lots of sea creatures”

“I found a baby octopus and that’s a big one.”

The children were discussing different animals and sizes.

“I’ve seen a jellyfish and orcas but I can’t remember where”.

“I’ve seen a lot of dolphins here but never when I’ve been to Spain.”

This  led to talking about what they would wear in hot countries and how to travel.

“We need to wear sun cream and sun hats when it’s hot”.

“I’ve been on a aeroplane to go to lots of places. Even Portugal and Spain.”

Another peer then said

“I got a boat before”.

Observing the children they were discussing what would happen if you would drown.

“You would need the fire engine, ambulance and even the coast guard.”

They also discussed personal experiences and different holidays they have been on .whilst they  played with a range of sea life animals..

“t

Our last forest session for this year was held on Tuesday. Some children explored the large stones around the area, recognising  and recalling the different shapes that they were similar too.

They found that by kneading the dough well made the putty bounce faster and higher. Some  children made cloud foam dough, supporting skills to mix, knead the dough and through using their senses discussed the texture, smell of the mixture, and what happens if they add more cornflour or conditioner.

Throughout the week we have observed so much  child initiated learning  occurring throughout the nursery. We’ve observed some children using the blocks to create very detailed buildings to some developing their shape recognition and matching skills when tidying up the blocks.

Others were seen developing their mark making skills using sand instead of paper, some developing their early reading skills to match names whilst helping to prepare a game for the adult. while some have revisited previous learning when discovering lots of different insects and bugs. They found a green shelled woodlouse, which they further extend the interest to learn more about this creature called a Rose chafer. A group played a game of Pokémon card hunt, demonstrating skills to search, listening to advice and using directional language, following the rules of the game and working well with others to problem solve how to reach the card that had blown out of the garden setting.. Outside one child enjoyed sharing his knowledge of the clouds and how the rain comes down, then strops, then goes slow or fast demonstrating using the sand falling onto the truck..

Our last play on pedals session for the bikers today focused on gliding and judging distance through a game called King or Queen of the castle. We also played Pirate treasure that supported skills to steer and be observant, but also early reading skills in recognition of their name and use counting,  and add and subtraction skills. All the children followed the rules giving support to others throughout the game to finish. They also recognised others achievements after judging in the distance challenge when we had the 2 winners  to become a king and queen of the castle game. Today we had 2 volunteers to support the adult, helping and preparing the area with the adult. Todays last session for the balancers ran on the same has yesterday with Leo becoming the King and Sehrish the queen of the castle for gliding the furthest. We also participated in the pirate treasure with Captain Innes being the first to find all his tokens. We finish off playing what’s the time Mr wolf focusing on using their brakes. Week beginning 26th May 2025

Hello everyone, we hope you have had a lovely week. Here is a look at what we have been up to….

children have been using the block area to explore their creative side as they made a range of structures such as houses and dino dens 🦕

Children have been role playing teachers as they hold a Christmas sing along and count how many accidents have happened that day to mark on the register ✍️

Groups of children have been very keen to investigate the woodwork bench to make models using the new wood that got delivered this week. Children have been reminded about how to use the tools safely and what they can add to their inventions to create interesting shapes and features 🔨

Children have been showcasing their art skills as they create wonderful pictures using a range of materials ♥️

We have had a lovely forest session today, we have been….
swinging from trees,
digging with sticks
building traps using loose parts
imagining we are picking oranges from the trees
discussing the weather and how it makes us feel

Went on a flower hunt around the grounds and took lots of photos of the different types to research their names
making sure we gave the animals space whilst observing them at work 🐝
We then sat around the fire for a tasty hot dog 🌭 or some shortbread 🍪
On our way back, we looked at the road signs and shared what they were there to warn others about

Children have been discussing a lot of Minecraft this week. Children then took their ideas to the block area where a Minecraft pig and panda were made. These ideas were put into the block play book where an adult scribed some of the ideas.

Groups of children participated in their first play on pedals session. We first discussed safety, looking at the bike, the functions such as tyres, brakes and the use in the correct manner. We discussed appropriate clothing such as trainers, their coats zipped up, the correct fitting of the helmet and the saddle height. We talked about listening skills and awareness of others and objects around.

The children have been creating obstacle courses as they used a range of loose parts and work to find out if the items were stable or wobbly and then used trail and error to find a new item instead.

Children have explored using the Lego outside to be creative and build models based on their interests. Children created Minecraft structures with their buddies and others just wanted to explore fitting pieces together and manipulating them to make different shapes 🟨

Children have been using the block area book to design their own houses that they will build. One child shared they wanted a dancing area for the teacher and the other had a pool so she could sunbathe in it. Another child was inspired to design their dream house and added to the book sharing “I would have a striped door”.

Reminders

  • there will be no nursery on Monday 2nd June or Tuesday 3rd June for a holiday and in service day.
  • there will be no play on pedals next week but will continue the following week.

Today outside A group of children were intrigued by a book called The Last Wolf by Mini Grey which is all about what is happening to our planet by taking away the trees. They all gathered round to listen and we discussed the important messages in the book and what we think of them 📖
Elyn- “we need to look after our world or the animals will all go away”
Robin- “don’t cut too many trees down and built too many houses, the animals that live in the forests will die because they don’t have much frost left”
Brodie- “we can’t take their forest because it’s taking their houses away”
Leo- “the forest is so tiny, the houses are blocking the forest”
George- “it got smaller, the houses are there, we need to get the forest back to normal again” Cammy- “we need to grow more trees for the animals”
The children very good at sharing what they took from the story which made us think about what we can do to help our planet and look after the animals 🌍 🐺
