Week beginning 3rd February

Hello everyone, we hope you have had a great week! Here is a look at what we have been up to in nursery…..

This week learning is… Exploring, Predicting, Being Curious, Literacy, Mathematics, Sharing, Self-Esteem, Creativity, Motor Skills, Turn Taking, Technology, Outdoor Learning and Problem Solving.

This week some  of the children have continued their interest in animals by researching how many species of bears there are in the world. They discovered that there  are 8 main species, they then extended their interest by researching into a  Sun bear. They were able to recall certain information, this is what they said….

“They have a golden spot on their chest”

They are the smallest of the bears”

“They loke to live in the trees”.

This is-now  displayed on our learning wall that is still very much developing,  and the response from the children is absolutely amazing.

We have also been observing an interest in the weather, its effects on the environment and how seasonal changes are occurring. This was observed in the recent bird watch outing around the school and when down at our forest session. The children were discussing how the birds were not out, questioning  if it was cold or too windy. And when out in the forest some children had noticed lots of trees fallen, and branches snapped off which lead to investigating the roots and how they spread out, and were lifting up out of the ground.

In the forest this week the children were observed exploring and investigating all areas, demonstrating skills in using the swing rope, climbing the various trees. to exploring the surroundings finding the strange model in the bushes at the back. They discussed making one of these for the nursery garden, recognising that we could recycle items to build. A couple of the children asked to explore the are up the hill after discussing how many of the trees and branches had fallen during the storms. They investigated the roots on one tree, following all the different pathways that they made. They went for into the trees to discover more which lead to talking about the different types of weather, its effects- and how they link into seasons/time. This could lead to a possible new learning topic with some.

The children also helped the adult to build a large tent using the tarpaulin and a very large branch and tent pegs. They had lots of fun role playing different scenarios from Superheroes , monsters, and police. They also enjoyed a hot snack and drink to keep them warm throughout the morning.

Throughout the weeks we have been observing children developing their learning through exploring a range of resources to see what they can do. They when asked by an adult what have they discovered  through a use of open ended questions, they could confidently share their findings. Last week we observed children using the large scales to discover weight, size. This week we have been observing children exploring shapes inside and out through using a range of resources and identifying these using the correct language, but also to discuss the properties of these. Some were able to recognise some 3D shapes too, whilst creating a range of models through using these resources., Along with shapes children have been exploring books of colour and are creating  their own images of animals linked to that colour..

In the snack area, Emily Rose decided to help create the shopping list for the nursery snack, recognising the items and used the correct language to describe. Then we had a very different tasting session with the children experiencing eating edible flowers with their crackers. They talked about the shapes of the flowers, colours and about how they could only eat the flowers that are safe and provided by an adult. On Friday they helped to make a lovely warm vegetable soup using different tools to blend.

Week beginning 6th January 2025

It’s our first week back at nursery and we have had lots of fun together as we learn. Here is a look at what we have been up to…

Groups of children have been exploring their mark making skills through different media’s as they look at mixing colours, pattern making and detail work.

Children have been using the loose parts in the home corner to help extend their play as Fraser uses wool for spaghetti and conkers for bolognese.

Groups of children have been exploring their numeracy skills as they use the coloured vehicles to make groups of colours or type of vehicle and looking at adding collections together to get a total sum.

Children have been extending their literacy skills through use of books and story cards to look at story sequencing and developing their language.

Leo and Brodie were investigating the ice outside as they discussed how ice is formed and how it feels when they touch it.

Children have been using ribbons to explore rhythm and movement as they dance along to a song on the whiteboard with their peers.

Children have also been using the wooden song spoons to sing along to songs together. The children’s favourite was 5 currant buns and they used money to give to one another during the song to show an awareness of buying and selling.

Following along with this, children also set up their own shop area to use money and create prices for items where they explored simple addition of items and making simple amounts using coins as they identified the different coin types.

Some children explored using the wooden number slices where they ordered numbers 0-20, identified a missing number and also a number in between 2 given numbers. The children showed independence and also asked for support when they knew they needed it.

Children have been continuing their interest in numbers as they explore matching quantities to the number. The children were keen to join in and shared their learning with others.

Reminders:

  • The weather can change suddenly and we would ask that you wrap your children up super cosy for nursery with gloves, scarves, hats etc for outside play as the children can play outside in all weathers.
  • Peep and bookbug sessions will continue again at the end of the month and we will keep you updated with the dates when we have these. These will both continue on a Thursday morning.
  • We will update you with the forest start date when we have it.

Have a great weekend! ☺️

Week beginning 2nd December

Hello everyone, we hope you have had a great week, here is a look at what we have been up to this week….

Flora made her very own snowman in the sand tray. Floral used the loose parts to add features to her snowman for arms and mark making buttons, eyes and a nose.

The children had a great time in the garden for our forest session yesterday. We explored a range of movement skills using loose parts. Luke used a stick and created his own drum using a boat to tap on.

Robin and Cammy were experimenting with some ice and how it was melting. Cammy said “I’m changing this into water”.

A group of children used clay to create a range of different models and structures. The children inspired one another through their imaginative use of loose parts. The children then made their own signs to go with the models to show what they had made.

A group of children used the musical instruments to play along to a range of Christmas songs that we were singing. They were working on keeping the beat and a rhythm.

A small group made their own motorhome using loose parts outside after asking questions to find out more. The boys shared the resources well and shared their ideas between one another.

A group of children took part in an intentional promotion which introduced matching coins, making amounts and identifying coins. We did this in preparation for buying and selling and exploring money when selling our enterprise project.

Children have been role playing being the ladies in the nursery as they plan and take part in a gym session. They used clip board and pencils to write down their ideas and used resources in the garden to make a gym session plan.

Children have been using the blocks to explore measuring in different ways. We tried using tape measures first and then used our hands to count out home many hands it took to get from top to bottoms.

Children have started to sell their Christmas enterprise projects and are very excited to share these with families. We will have these on sale up until the end of term to try and raise money for resources chosen by the children.

Reminders:

  • can we remind parents in the morning that the white spaces are for parents to park in and not the yellow ones as these are for staff members who may not start until 9:00am when children are arriving and need to park.
  • we will have our enterprise projects on sale at drop off and pick up.
  • Bookbug will be on Thursday just after drop off in the huts which will be festive themed.

Have a lovely weekend and we will see you next week! 😄

Week beginning 11th November

We hope you have had a great week, here is a look at what we have been up to….

Children took part in a forest session in the bottom garden where they explored a lot of climbing, direction, forces and imaginative play. Children worked together to create a bed for the speed boat whilst others wanted to use the iPad to explore poses and other perspectives in the tree.

Children have been exploring their weaving skills as they use frames and ribbons to create a spooky house together.

Innes asked to search what the worlds fastest animal was with his peers but before we did that he guessed a cheetah as he had seen it on the TV. Innes matched the words from the wooden disc to the keyboard to login the computer in. After research we found out Innes was right and we also found out that the worlds slowest animal is the sloth.

Children joined in creating a bar graph based on the captain underpants book as they found out what everyone favourite underpants were. They guessed which would have the most, the least and who they thought might not get any votes at all.

Children have been using their mark making skills to draw outside using pens and card and they make their own designs and shapes.

Children have also been creative inside as they help with our Christmas enterprise activity by painting Christmas decorations and cutting out shapes using the clay. This sparked conversations around money and selling our items.

Children explored screen and film as they used props from a story box that linked to nursery rhymes and created their own stories as they used the stage to act these out together. The children also added loose parts to develop their ideas.

Reminders:

  • Nursery will be closed to children tomorrow (Friday 15th November) as it is in service day
  • please ensure your child had a spare change of clothes with them as well as wellies so they can enjoy some water play

Week beginning 21st October 2024

We hope you had a lovely relaxing time off. Here is what we have been up to the first week back….

Children have been exploring their fine motor skills as they create their own masks using paper, wool and scissors. They only needed a little support to attach the wool and hold the paper still as they cut.

Children have been exploring weight outside as they looked at items that were heavier than others. Children have also been threading outside using straws and seeing how they can create different lengths.

Children have been exploring mark making and attempting to copy words that they need for their everyday play. They then independently used a ruler to explore how long their pictures were.

Using bottles and a range of other resources, children made their own music shakers. They then developed these using their own creative ideas by adding colours and tape to make them unique.

Children are beginning to explore Diwali and look at how others celebrate as they made their own henna designs on a hand print they drew and cut out. The children were able to discuss their own experiences with Diwali as they said about seeing something on television about it. “That’s the festival of light, they light candles and dance to music and do hand designs”.

Children have been working together to look after the nursery resources independently. Luke and Florence noticed sand in the home corner and swept it up together. “I can be the bin man” says Luke.

Children are continuing to show an interest in our learning wall topic “People who help up” as they ask to read a story about the police. From this, Rosie shared that she learned all about finger prints and how they are put on the computer to catch the bad guys. Innes showed an interest in looking at all the different sections of the book.

This week a group of children asked to make play dough. Leo asked for blue play dough as he was going to make Sonic. Through a group discussion and problem solving we decided to add blue powder paint to the play dough to create the blue colour. The group of children explored making models of numbers, shapes and animals. This led to a discussion about what animals eat and where they come from. “Giraffes eat leaves.” “We get leaves from trees” “trees grow in the ground.” This then led how to care for plants by giving them water and sunlight.

This week a group of children participated in making a “special” tray for the story sharing a shell. We worked together to create a mind map and gather ideas from the story to see what we could incorporate. Innes enjoyed looking through the story to see if we were missing any resources. Jackson, flora and Rosie enjoyed helping create the rock pool. “This is where they live” “yeah but they live in a shell”. They got creative and used instruments and a torch to create thunder and lightening in the storm. “This is the storm” Rosie and Flora enjoyed retelling the storm part or the story using the instruments and flashing of the torch. They confidently spoke about their favourite parts of the story and retold them.

This week Rosie and Sehrish demonstrated their skills to listen to a set of instructions that described size, such as tallest, smallest, medium sized then selected the correct picture.

Children have been sharing their kind and caring sides with one another as they help others around the room. Children helps others by fixing their clothing or fixing resources they noticed were broken. “It’s broken I need to fix it!”. “There you go I’ll do your cardigan for you”.

Our Cosy Time Library 📚 This will be available to families at drop off and pick up time every day for you and your child to choose a book to take home to read 🏡There is no time limit on our library books we would just ask that you sign the book with your child’s name, the title of the book they have taken, the date it was taken and when it was returned ✍️There will be pens and hand sanitiser available for you to sign the books in and out. The Nursery Team

Week beginning 16th September 2024

We hope you have all had a lovely week, here is a snapshot at what we have been up to….

A group of children have been exploring some conkers that were collected and seeing how they can open them up to look at what’s inside. This then sparked an interest in going for a walk around the school and nursery areas to collect lots of natural resources such as sticks, leaves and conkers.

The children had their first forest session this week where they explored all around the environment. There was lots of discussion about negotiation, findings and turn taking. The children were independent with the tree swing and made sure that their friends were safe as they used it. Children were resourceful and used charcoal to create pictures.

Children have been exploring the clay. They followed a book where it showed step by step how to make an animal of their choice. This activity is great for developing fine motor skills. The children also explored the texture of the clay as they used it on different surfaces.

Children have been continuing to explore people who help us as they used the wooden figures. This sparked lots of conversation about different peoples roles and how these people help in the community.

Children have been creative with the mud kitchen as they mix a range of resources together. The children collected some lavender to add to their play and spoke about the textures and smells.

Children have been experimenting as they used water and pens to create a rainbow. A piece of paper was put into two cups of water with ink in them which then made the colours transfer to the paper where the colours then rose and created a rainbow.

A group of children were very careful as they made their own crispy cakes. They used a candle and stand to melt the chocolate and marshmallows and then mixed in some rice crispies. The best part of all was eating them after!

Children outside have been exploring numeracy through puzzles as they used a rocket puzzle to count up and down from ten. The children worked together to fit the pieces together.

Children have been exploring literacy through books and mark making. Children have the opportunity to explore mark making in every area of the nursery both indoor and out.

Reminders:

  • Forest kindergarten is continuing on Tuesday, please remember to still bring your child’s bag with a change of clothes and shoes for going back to nursery in the afternoon. We meet at Waterstone Crook from 9:00 – 9:15 where we will then head to the forest location behind Forman Arts Centre.
