Newport Nursery week of 9.12.24

Hello everyone, we hope you have had a great week! Here is a look at what we have been up to in nursery…..

This week learning is… Exploring, Predicting, Being Curious, Literacy, Mathematics, Sharing, Self-Esteem, Creativity, Motor Skills, Turn Taking, Technology, Outdoor Learning and Problem Solving.

This week in Nursery the children have been very busy further developing their current enterprise project creating lots of play dough poop. They used non standard tools to measure the ingredients, they used skills to mix and discussed the reasons why we needed to use heat to bring the dough together. They added spices for  the gingerbread man  that stimulated a discussion on their likes or dislikes whilst using their senses  to describe the other flavourings of chocolate or peppermint.. They all followed the different processes of manipulating the dough into the equal sized balls, creating groups of four. Then the bagging stage, adding the  labels next. This activity inspired others to join in, showing a growing understanding of waiting their turn and being able to do the next ones.

This lead to questions being asked about reindeers.. “Do reindeer fly?

“What do reindeer eat?

“Where do reindeer live?

This will be taken forward and then displayed onto our current learning wall.

Today the children extended their learning interest in reindeers in doing some research to find the answers to their questions, and enjoyed watching a short video that explained how Santa’s sleigh.

“They eat green things like grass and leaves”

“They live in the cold”

“Santa’s sleigh has power”

Throughout the week the children have been involved in a range of Christmas  themed activities such as developing  their writing skills in writing out a last minute Christmas wish list. They also recalled the need to sign their name at the bottom. They have also been creative in making cards for a special person that incorporated their own ideas on what a certain Christmas theme item looked like, bringing their experiences seen of these. We had a lovely Christmas Book Bug session with Miss Nelson and Mrs Laing to which all the children attended and enjoyed singing songs and listening to some Christmas stories.

Following on from their interest in the play dough making a large snowman dough poop with sparkles was made for the children to enjoy developing their manipulation skills to create a range of shapes and designs. This activity promoted social interaction with all to experience sharing their thoughts on the texture. smell anda discussion on the weather conditions linking it to the snow and ice. They also discussed a range of animals that live in these conditions, to which we have more research to do on a few popular animals. This will be researched over the next few days to be added to the wall.

Outside the children have been making the most of the dry weather incorporating a range of team games, and role situations using a range of loose parts to further develop the play. Some children were using skills to investigate speed. One child was using a bike and the other was running and they both came to discover that the bike was the fastest.

Although we didn’t make the forest this week we still had lots of fun down the bottom garden with the fire to toas marshmellows and make a smore along with a hot chocolate. The children enjoyed exploring the frost on the ground investigating the ice in the tyres, to climbing trees.

Newport Nursery week of the 18.11.24

Hello everyone, we hope you have had a great week! Here is a look at what we have been up to in nursery…..

This week learning is… Exploring, Predicting, Being Curious, Literacy, Mathematics, Sharing, Self-Esteem, Creativity, Motor Skills, Turn Taking, Technology, Outdoor Learning and Problem Solving.

This week we have seen lots of children developing their own learning through asking lots of questions demonstrating skills to research, recall the new learning and create their own images of these animals. This is now creating a fabulous learning  wall. of lots of different animals being researched. We have had questions being shared from their homes such as chickens, tigers, giraffe., panadas and many more such as a Mammoth. This came from one child at snack using cucumber has tusks that inspired others to talk about elephants leading onto Mammoth research.  We have had children sharing their parents favourite animals. I could keep going on, but please take time to look at the wall as you come into the nursery or take a learning sheet home to share with your child. The children have also been enjoying exploring the resources displaying skills to match and sort the animals.

Some of the questions asked…..

“How fast do tigers go?

How big are giraffes?

“What are Mammoths?.

Also this week the children have been sharing their knowledge and understanding on People who help us when we have been evaluating the learning topic.

This week we have also been promoting the forth coming St Andrews day celebration through creating a weaving pattern and looking at the different tartans available. This continues from the weaving and threading area that has recently been promoted in the setting.

At snack the children are continuing voicing their opinions on whether they liked the snack that day through a mark making experience. Hotdogs seems to be the favourite at the moment. One child enjoyed sharing his knowledge on fruit, recognising that it was healthy for him, and sugar was not. We also celebrated Alfie’s 5th birthday on Thursday and we all hope that he has a lovely day on Friday.

The children are continuing to enjoy a session of cosmic yoga each day after lunchtime and they are developing their skills to move their bodies into an array of positions.

Outside there have been opportunities to enjoy the nice cold weather sharing their thoughts on how it made them feel, what they have been noticing such as the leaves falling, jack frost and discovering what creatures are about. This week we had a visit from a pheasant whilst enjoying one of the many walks around the school ground. They have found mole hills, a beehive even a horse. On Friday whilst outside a group of children observed how the planes made wriggly lines and straight ones too which lead to sharing holiday experiences and their travel journeys. This lead onto discussing how the moon comes out during the day too. Another possible learning wall topic for outside.  This lead to the adults setting up a turf tray of cloud dough which feel and looks like snow for the children to explore and investigate.

We are also being extremely busy continuing with the nursery’s enterprise scheme making  items to sell over the coming weeks.

Some children are preparing for the Christmas period singing and playing instruments to the tune of Jingle bells having lots of fun sharing and exploring the instruments.

Newport Nursery week of the 28.10.24

Hello everyone, we hope you have had a great week! Here is a look at what we have been up to in nursery…..

This week learning is… Exploring, Predicting, Being Curious, Literacy, Mathematics, Sharing, Self-Esteem, Creativity, Motor Skills, Turn Taking, Technology, Outdoor Learning and Problem Solving.

This week we have been continuing the children’s development and understanding of celebrating various festivals, celebrations and religious beliefs looking at Halloween and Diwali. A variety of activities that encouraged children to explore and participate in whilst having lots of fun.

Outside the children experienced creating very decorative tea light holders using clay, paint and sparkles. They used skills to manipulate the clay into a shape then after listening to and looking at information from books, pictures and the internet. They discussed the texture, feel of the clay, and the shape of the holder.

Also from observing and listening to a group of children discussing a recent Halloween party that they had attended, the adult promoted an activity to create a range of Halloween themed pictures. They used a range of natural tools to create their images, sharing the resources and their ideas well with others. They were then using the correct language to describe the  different sizes created,

Whilst inside a group of children were seen exploring the Diwali pattern making area to create their own patters using a selection of coloured buttons. They were able to sequence and follow a pattern, this extended then to creating their own patterns using other methods such as pens and paint.

At the forest, the children enjoyed a hot snack  of Hot dogs or crumpets along with a hot chocolate drink afterwards. They were able to discuss how the environment had changed after noticing how many leaves were now on the floor. This lead to discussions on how the weather is changing, with some saying..

“It’s getting colder now and windy too”

“Then wind makes the leaves fall down”

We also found some mesh netting which we hung up and the children sourced a variety of natural resources such as leaves, cones, sticks and berries to create a lovely piece of art work. They were able to share their understanding of not eating the berries, recalling the need to wash their hands afterwards.

In were able to discuss how their bodies felt. the week the children enjoyed a gym session that promoted skills to jump, balance, roll, hop walk forwards and backwards using a range of large gym equipment. Afterwards they

Yesterday lots of fun and games were had from pumpkin carving and then decorating using glue, sparkles and spray paint. But I’m not too sure if the spray paint actually went onto pumpkin,   The children showed their skills to match playing Spooky Halloween bingo, to reading stories under a table covered in dark material and a torch. Lots of imaginative ghostly stories were made. A Book bug session was held and afterwards the children explored the story sack of the Room on the broom.

Today the children explored the symbolic meaning of the Poppy. They shared that a Poppy is worn to remember people who help to protect us in the wars. This led to some creating their own Poppy for the Nursery.

Newport Nursery week of the 23.9.24

Hello everyone, we hope you have had a great week! Here is a look at what we have been up to in nursery……

This week learning is… Exploring, Predicting, Being Curious, Literacy, Mathematics, Sharing, Self-Esteem, Creativity, Motor Skills, Turn Taking, Technology, Outdoor Learning and Problem Solving.

Whilst outside the children have been continuing their interest to explore and investigate using the playdough materials and a range of tools  and utensils. They used the correct language to describe and predict the outcomes whilst involved in a very fun but sticky experience.

“We need scoops and spoons to mix”.

“we need more flour, its sticky”

“Now we need more water”.

We have also been revamping the sound area outside using loose pats that allows the children to explore a range of different sounds they can make. The adult worked with the children to listen to their ideas on what  where and how they could do these.. These supports our nursery vision and children’s rights of listening to and valuing the children’s thoughts and feelings along with the children actively taking responsibility  of their learning environment. Afterwards we observed and heard lots of different sounds coming from this area- exploring the different tools to make these sounds, using language to describe the sounds  such has loud, very loud, faster, slower.

A group  of children are also  showing an interest to further develop their own learning interest by asking a range of questions .  One child asked ..

“What makes wind”

“I like the wind, it blows on my face”

They recalled past storms stating that lots of trees came down, and it made lots of noise. They were also able to share their learning from the research given and being shown a short educational video on how wind is made to their parents. We have started a floor book that will show all the other learning interest researched by the children. This will be in the basket located in the story area for you to look through. Some children enjoyed using the natural counting sticks to recognise and match the quantity to that number. Afterwards using these to be creative and shared these thoughts with others.

The children are continuing their interest to develop essential skills in using scissors outside in using the lavender to cut and prepare delicious dishes. They are recalling the need to use these safety by listening to the advice given by the adults, and then  demonstrating this by how they hold them whilst walking, and when not in use.

We have also observed children using the puppets and the puppet show retelling  their favourite stories in their own words. This is continued with a group of children using the puppets whilst listening to the story outside. One child listened to her favourite story then she re-read the story by herself, discussing what happens in the story, along with the characters feelings. The smartboard is being used well either to further develop their mark making skills or to complete a range of jigsaws linked to the Autumn theme.

In the forest this week the children enjoyed role playing superheroes using the trees has vehicles and sticks to combat the not so nice characters in their play. The children are especially enjoying using the rope swing, demonstrating skills to move, balance and hold whilst learning to share and take turns.  They enjoyed pancakes and butter along with hot chocolate or water to drink. On the way back a group of children enjoyed sharing their knowledge of the area, and are beginning to recognise signs and print in the environment.

Newport Nursery week 24.06.24

Well the time is here to say goodbye to all the children moving onwards to Primary 1. This year has gone so fast but what fun we have had. We have watched all the children grow becoming independent learners and we have welcomed some new children and families too throughout the year.

This week has been a whirlwind with many different experiences throughout the day. From the Nursery Graduation on Wednesday, what a wonderful celebration of all that your child has become. Thank you all for sharing this with us. to the Teddy Bears picnic with their buddies on Thursday morning. They all enjoyed a strawberry and cream  treat after playing a range of games that their buddies had organised. We then were invited to watch the P7 Graduation performance which all children enjoyed watching.

We had our last forest session on Tuesday and this time the weather was kind to us and the children could choose between playing in the  woods or on the large grassy area. Some children were using skills to investigate force through rolling. They were exploring how fast they could go and used markers to see who went the furthest. One child decided to make a small bouquet of wild flowers that they had picked.

Outside on Monday the children investigated cardboard boxes and used their creative minds to create sun chairs that promoted skills to problem solve. Some children were off on their imaginative holidays to Spain and Africa that shared their knowledge of some animals that are found there. They used the wooden car outside to travel in style.. Some children were also very busy running a small restaurant using a range of loose parts to make tacos and blueberry pie.

We also celebrated Frasers 5th Birthday, Happy Birthday Fraser! and they all enjoyed making and eating some cupcakes on Thursday afternoon.

Newport Nursery week of the 04.06.24.

This week learning is… Exploring, Predicting, Being Curious, Literacy, Mathematics, Sharing, Self-Esteem, Creativity, Motor Skills, Turn Taking, Technology, Outdoor Learning and Problem Solving.

This week in nursery we have had Miss McKenzie, Miss Nelson and Mrs Wilson.

In forest this week we have observed lots of role play that incorporated the roles of teachers and schools. They used the trees and the natural resources for the chairs  and tables, whiteboards etc. They also used a range of loosed parts to  create a den and made images of, letters, numbers and shapes.. The children enjoyed a fresh pancake with either jam or Honey, along with a drink of milk or water.

Through the week at the snack area we have been talking a lot about the fruit and vegetables that we have to eat with lots of children enjoying sharing their likes and dislikes, but also about unusual fruit and vegetables that we have not tried before. They have been discussing unhealthy and healthy foods and we will be looking at how they can help our bodies to stay healthy.

Outside and inside the children have been continuing their interest in design and engineering through using the different loose parts available, with the children eager to share with others what they have made. Some children were using the sand area to role play being on the beach, taking their sandals off to feel the sand on their feet. They used their senses to discuss the texture and how it felt on their feet.

The children have been looking forward to their Buddy days and yesterday they learnt who that will be, and they all were extremely happy with the choices that were made. We have also been supporting the children to become more responsible in tiding up after their play has finished, especially towards lunchtime and at the end of the session. We have used the timer setting on the smartboard which has provided encouragement to all the children to tidy up. They especially liked to tell others how long they have left.

In the Play on pedals session this week, the focus was on Gliding and to be able to balance and steering whilst moving at speed. We used the Sea of sharks game to promote and support this important skill in their developing ability to ride a bike. The children all persevered with this challenge, giving support to less confident riders to be able to accomplish the task, and to display great pride in their achievements.

On Thursday another successful PEEP session was held with Miss McKenzie and Mrs Laing which todays session was held outside down in the bottom garden. The focus this week was on Listening and Talking.

Newport Nursery week 13.5.24

This week learning is… Exploring, Predicting, Being Curious, Literacy, Mathematics, Sharing, Self-Esteem, Creativity, Motor Skills, Turn Taking, Technology, Outdoor Learning and Problem Solving.

What a week we have had with all the lovely weather which the children have all enjoyed playing in especially getting a lovely fruit shoot ice pop which they have all requested getting some more and to make their own using fruit and water.

This week the children have once again enjoyed the visit from their Bubbies having lots of fun together throughout Thursday and Friday morning..

Outside the focus was on individual Sunflower planting activity for the children to eventually take home to plant in their garden or in large pots. Lots of discussions that demonstrate their understanding of how to care and nurture these to grow. This then inspired the children to recall the need to water all the plants throughout the nursery garden through the week.

On Wednesday afternoon the children enjoyed a visit to a Cello music lesson that the older children participate in. They listen extremely well with interest to what the music teacher was telling them about the Cello and the Violin and answered a range of questions too about the differences and the the loud that these instruments make. They were able to recognise the different tunes and joined in to sing along to these. The music interest continue with a group of girls creating a dance show to a range of different tunes outside.

Inside some children showed an interest to learn more about the black jaguars and panthers that inspired others to research a topic on Monkeys. They looked at the largest and the smallest monkey, then discovering  that there is also a Owl monkey that has very large eyes and it comes out at night too.

Forest went extremely well this week with the children enjoying a snack of pancakes with either jam or honey, along with their favourite hot chocolate. Whilst there they engaged in a spinning experiment to see what happens to their bodies after spinning around in a fast movement. Lots of giggles after falling to the ground and they could describe how their bodies felt after the exercise.

On Thursday the children enjoyed a visit from Morag Hood who has written many children’s books, one such one is called Dig, Dig, Digger which they especially enjoyed listening too. Afterwards they participated in a drawing lesson to draw a character from one of her books.

This morning the children released 4 of the butterflies down in the bottom garden, but we still have one left which was the last to hatch that is still needing a bit more care.

Inside we have seen some great imaginative role play using loose parts and material to create a wonderful sea world after creating paper doll mermaids . This interest is still on going and will be supported to continue and extend this interest through other learning activities.

Newport Nursery week 29.04.20

This week learning is… Exploring, Predicting, Being Curious, Literacy, Mathematics, Sharing, Self-Esteem, Creativity, Motor Skills, Turn Taking, Technology, Outdoor Learning and Problem Solving.

This week in Nursery we have had Miss McKenzie, Mrs Wilson, and Mrs McNeil.

This week has flown by and all the children have  enjoyed being outside having  lots of fun in  the great weather we have had this week.

A group of children spent time creating a planting area within the large tyre. They used carboard to  line the bottom and taking turns each helped to fill with soil. They then helped to sow a range of seeds to attract butterflies and bees. They confidently discussed how to care for these and discussed whether the caterpillars will stay here when they have become butterflies. They then discussed what else they could plant in there after looking through the seed packets they selected some sunflowers. One child was able to describe….

“There are big sunflowers and little ones, look”

Throughout the week the children have recalled the need to water and check on their process and share their findings. This planting interest continues with the children filling smaller wellie boot pots pots with seeds too..

Outside the children have been developing their hand and eye co-ordination skills through a range of activities. The swing ball is still very popular along with playing tennis and the new ball catch game.  The children are also enjoying the large snakes and ladders game, following the rules of the game and in taking turns.

Inside we have been observing lots of children confidently sharing  what they have tried, what they have been doing and sharing their learning. One child previously said that he didn’t like porridge, but he tried it with jam and honey and said..

“I loved it”

Some have been showing their growing skills in letter recognition and simple word formations. with some displaying their skills to copy letters and words.  While others have been busy creating a range of models using the Lego and sharing their ideas well. Through the Caterpillar lifecycle process we are also looking at symmetry, and finding symmetry in their environment through a range of experiences such as focus painting the different butterflies found in Scotland, and when outside or at the forest. A group of children after looking at a bird book decided to research a Peregrine falcon, and created some lovely pictures of these birds.

One child showed great courage and determination to succeed in using the peddle bike. She fell off many times but quickly got back on to succeed. Well done Chloe!

In the forest our new children really enjoyed the experience exploring and challenging themselves in the environment. Some children continued their interest in the flowers growing around them from a previous visit. So with the adult they went to investigate their progress taking phots and discussing various that they could see. features.

The Butterflies are growing fast and they are not so small now with the children investigating the process of the lifecycle and sharing with others what they know. The caterpillars are now entering the stage and making their cocoon. So we shall wait and see what next week  has happened.

The music learning wall is still on going with children creating their own bands and asking to listen to a range of different styles of music. This week we had the Harry Potter soundtrack music and classical relaxing sounds being played.

In Nursery next week.

Newport Nursery wk 15.04.24

This week learning is… Exploring, Predicting, Being Curious, Literacy, Mathematics, Sharing, Self-Esteem, Creativity, Motor Skills, Turn Taking, Technology, Outdoor Learning and Problem Solving.

This week in Nursery we have had Miss McKenzie, Mrs Wilson, Mrs Laing our Nursery teacher and Mrs McNeil.

Welcome back everyone after the Easter holiday. We hope you all had a lovely break!!!  We are also welcoming  this week  Gregor and Lachlan and their families to Newport Nursery this week too.  Hello  and welcome to Newport Nursery.

This week the children have settled back into the nursery environment and have continued to develop their learning interests. Outside a group of children created a large hopscotch  design and used skills to hop, jump and balance whilst moving their bodies at speed. They first needed to problem solve on the design, then displayed skills to share ideas, turn takes make changes. They then decided on how many jumps, counting jumps and numbers on the way.

Also outside the children engaged around the sand tray to create an ice cream parlour. Lots of imagination arose with the children using a range of language to describe the ice cream, flavours etc. This extended into developing their numeracy money skills that showed a growing awareness of the different values of coins, notes and other methods of payment creating a shop with a till and money, labels and a price list/menu board.

Down in the bottom garden the children used a range of equipment to further develop their skills to kick and catch a- ball, showing their developing football and tennis skills.  Once again team games are still very popular at the moment with What’s the time Mr Wolf with the children using the dice to see what  and how many steps they needed to take. Another game of Dodge ball was mentioned with the children discussing with the adult the rules of the game and how to be safe whilst playing this outside.

The Learning wall interest in music has returned with lots of questions about the different styles of music through the decades. They have been recalling songs and enjoyed dancing, and singing along to these tunes that has inspired others to participate sharing their thoughts. We looked at Punk rock through Billy Idol and how they dressed. We also listen to a range of different tunes from the 50’s up until the present day. If you would like to share your favourite music it would be most welcome, or if you have a particular skill playing a musical instrument we would love to see your performance…..

In the block area the children have been very busy creating a range of models and sharing their knowledge with the adults about famous structures and building in the world. In the woodwork bench we have seen children creating their own mobile phone and calculators that included a range of functions.

Lots of interest using the smart board showing skills to estimate how many bongs they heard, then matching this to the number. Fantastic response from the children who then asked for more challenges which inspired others to join in also. We had number sequences, make your own tunes and a selection of letter games to find the missing sound.

In Nursery next week.
