Newport Nursery week of 9.12.24

Hello everyone, we hope you have had a great week! Here is a look at what we have been up to in nursery…..

This week learning is… Exploring, Predicting, Being Curious, Literacy, Mathematics, Sharing, Self-Esteem, Creativity, Motor Skills, Turn Taking, Technology, Outdoor Learning and Problem Solving.

This week in Nursery the children have been very busy further developing their current enterprise project creating lots of play dough poop. They used non standard tools to measure the ingredients, they used skills to mix and discussed the reasons why we needed to use heat to bring the dough together. They added spices for  the gingerbread man  that stimulated a discussion on their likes or dislikes whilst using their senses  to describe the other flavourings of chocolate or peppermint.. They all followed the different processes of manipulating the dough into the equal sized balls, creating groups of four. Then the bagging stage, adding the  labels next. This activity inspired others to join in, showing a growing understanding of waiting their turn and being able to do the next ones.

This lead to questions being asked about reindeers.. “Do reindeer fly?

“What do reindeer eat?

“Where do reindeer live?

This will be taken forward and then displayed onto our current learning wall.

Today the children extended their learning interest in reindeers in doing some research to find the answers to their questions, and enjoyed watching a short video that explained how Santa’s sleigh.

“They eat green things like grass and leaves”

“They live in the cold”

“Santa’s sleigh has power”

Throughout the week the children have been involved in a range of Christmas  themed activities such as developing  their writing skills in writing out a last minute Christmas wish list. They also recalled the need to sign their name at the bottom. They have also been creative in making cards for a special person that incorporated their own ideas on what a certain Christmas theme item looked like, bringing their experiences seen of these. We had a lovely Christmas Book Bug session with Miss Nelson and Mrs Laing to which all the children attended and enjoyed singing songs and listening to some Christmas stories.

Following on from their interest in the play dough making a large snowman dough poop with sparkles was made for the children to enjoy developing their manipulation skills to create a range of shapes and designs. This activity promoted social interaction with all to experience sharing their thoughts on the texture. smell anda discussion on the weather conditions linking it to the snow and ice. They also discussed a range of animals that live in these conditions, to which we have more research to do on a few popular animals. This will be researched over the next few days to be added to the wall.

Outside the children have been making the most of the dry weather incorporating a range of team games, and role situations using a range of loose parts to further develop the play. Some children were using skills to investigate speed. One child was using a bike and the other was running and they both came to discover that the bike was the fastest.

Although we didn’t make the forest this week we still had lots of fun down the bottom garden with the fire to toas marshmellows and make a smore along with a hot chocolate. The children enjoyed exploring the frost on the ground investigating the ice in the tyres, to climbing trees.
