Newport Nursery 19.01.26 – 23.01.26

Hello everyone, we hope you all have had a great week! Here is a quick look at what we have been up to in nursery…..

This week learning is… creativity, motor skills, team work, communication, balancing skills, hand/eye coordination, numeracy, literacy, self confidence, exploring, predicting, being curious, sharing, self-esteem, technology, outdoor learning and problem solving.

Throughout the week we have observed groups of children being very creative in developing their thoughts and ideas to create and build models using a range of resources inside and out. One group worked together in the block area to create a model. They shared their ideas by communicating with each other and solved design problems together and independently by using different sized and shaped blocks to keep their model standing. After concentrating on their model for a long time they discussed that it was a holiday home.

“We’re making it four floors.” “Will we make bunk beds.” “It’s the animal holiday house.” “The animals will live there.” Through higher ordering questions they could discuss places,” we could stay when we’re on holiday”. “We could sleep in a holiday house.

“When I went on holiday I stayed in a hotel. It had a swimming pool.”

“I’ve been to a caravan home but only once.”

They continued to communicate with each other and asked the ladies to take a picture of it so it could go on the learning wall. After completing it with a chimney they then asked to see the photos I had taken.

“Now can you send them to our mummies please.”

They then  shared their success and learning home to their families.

We also enjoyed seeing and hearing about the children’s achievements from home with models that they had created and confidently sharing these with us. One child had created a model hovercraft which then lead to researching more about these forms of transport. This inspired others to learn about this too. Another had used a range of junk to create his model confidently sharing that it was a dragon.

Also continuing from the ice interest last week the children enjoyed a little experiment to see how long the ice balloon would last. Over the 3 days the children recalled to take a photo of this using skills to estimate how long it takes to melt. By day 3 the ice had all gone with the children confidently sharing the reasons why it had melted…

“its because its raining and its hotter too”.

Throughout the week we have been focusing on patterns, sequence, match which has supported their developing hand and eye coordination through manipulative in using the small pegs and boards, and the counters to create designs. The area is set in a quiet space to allow the children to freely investigate.

The children have also been enjoying playing a range of card games especially UNO where they have been quietly developing important numeracy skills along with turn taking and following the game rules.

The Learning wall is developing well with lots of the children’s input through the learning sheets from home or in general questions being asked. Please take a look at all their hard work, and we welcome any input from yourselves too.
