Newport Nursery is a bright open playroom. There is a separate Nursery entrance for children, parents and carers arriving and leaving. The children have an enclosed outdoor play area adjacent to the nursery and also access to the school playground.
Literacy and English
Every day the children will have the opportunity to listen to a story together. Together we will discuss the story, thinking about the storyline and characters and predicting what might happen next. The children will also be listening for sounds and words which rhyme together. The children will be thinking about when to talk and when to listen and they will be encouraged to take their turn during talking and listening activities.
The children will have lots of opportunities to write: at the writing table, making lists in the house corner, making plans in the construction area, writing the snack menu etc etc. Some children can write their name independently, others will be encouraged to start writing.

Numeracy and Mathematics
The children will be sorting a wide variety of objects into sets and some will be able to discuss their chosen criteria for the sets they have made. Some children will divide the set in to 2 parts and then add the 2 parts together; this is a simple introduction into the concept of addition.
The children will be looking at numbers and the fact that they represent quantities of objects. We will be singing number songs and looking for numbers all around us. Some children will be recognising numerals.
The children will be looking for patterns in the local environment and making simple patterns of their own using small toys and coloured cubes.
The children will be making a graph about their favourite fruits and vegetables in Nursery and discussing the results.
Health and Well Being
All the children are busy making new friends. We will talk about what makes a good friend and what it feels like to be left out. We will talk about what to do if any one has a worry or a concern and who to talk to about worries.
The children are learning about basic hygiene, constantly being reminded when to wash hands. The children brush their teeth every day after snack.
The children choose the healthy snack they would like to have each day. They get free fruit every day. On a Thursday they decide which fruit they would like for the following week and 2 children telephone the order in to the suppliers. Every day 2 children prepare the snack. The children serve themselves.
Physical Activities.
Every day the children have opportunities to play actively in and out of doors. They are encouraged to explore a variety of different activities; balancing and climbing on the climbing frames, pedalling, scootering, digging, planting etc. The children are playing every day in our new outdoor area where they have endless opportunities to explore and play imaginatively. In PE the children are becoming spatially aware and are running, jogging, hopping and skipping. We use our local community, where the children can observe the changing seasons and freely explore in a safe environment.
