Block 3 (April – July 2026)<\/strong><\/p>\n

P1 is a class of 24 children which can be found on the bottom floor. We strive to follow our school values safe, ready and respectful. We have a recognition board with a weekly target, we try our very best to get on the board each day.<\/p>\n

On a Monday we focus on our reading. We are learning to decode by blending our sounds to read words. We also practise our tricky words, and we know that these are words we cannot sound out so we try to practise them as much as we can. Miss McComiskie reads with each reading group before their books go home on a Friday. On a Tuesday, we are learning alternative spellings for different sounds. On a Wednesday, we alternate between handwriting and literacy circle tasks such as question master, illustrator and predictor. We will use stories linked to our \u2018In the Garden\u2019 topic to complete literacy circle roles. On a Thursday, we focus on our writing. We are currently learning to describe. We are focusing on the noun, pronoun pattern and describing from the different descriptive bubbles.<\/p>\n

In numeracy, we are continuing to work on our number knowledge up to 20 and beyond. We are focusing on counting in 2s and writing numbers as words. We are also continuing to revise our addition and subtraction. We will be using strategies such as concrete materials, number lines, fingers etc to support us with this. In maths, we are going to be working on time. We will be learning to tell o\u2019clock and half-past times as well as looking at daily routines, days of the week, months of the year and seasons.<\/p>\n

Our topic this term is In the Garden. We are very interested in this topic and want to find out lots of facts about different minibeasts such as spiders, bees, ladybirds and caterpillars\/butterflies. We also have caterpillars in our classroom that we are going to observe going through the different stages of the lifecycle and then eventually set them free when this process is complete.<\/p>\n

Our PE day is a Monday and we aim to come to school in our PE clothes. This term, we are practising for sports day and then will focus on racquet skills.<\/p>\n

As part of our health and wellbeing learning, children in P1 will be covering Relationships, Sexual Health and Parenthood (RSHP). This term we will be covering: \u201cMy body belongs to me, looking after plants and animals, pregnancy and looking after a baby and personal space and privacy\u201d. We hope any questions you have can be answered through the national resource https:\/\/rshp.scot\/<\/a>.<\/p>\n

On a Tuesday afternoon Mrs Ritchie teaches music. Mrs Ritchie will let us out at the end of the day on a Tuesday.<\/p>\n

In P1, homework goes home on a Friday and should be returned the following Wednesday. Tricky word flashcards are included in your child\u2019s homework folder, and it is very beneficial to practise these as much as possible.<\/p>\n
