Our Curriculum

In Early Years settings, children are surrounded by rich opportunities for learning that support their development across the key areas of the Curriculum for Excellence, which is organised into eight curriculum areas:

  • Health and Wellbeing
  • Literacy and English
  • Numeracy and Mathematics
  • Expressive Arts
  • Science
  • Technologies
  • Social Subjects
  • Religious and Moral Education

All staff have a responsibility to build our children’s capacity to become:

  • Successful Learners
  • Confident Individuals
  • Responsible Citizens
  • Effective Contributors

In Early Learning and Childcare (ELC) and Primary 1, most children will be working within the Early Level of Curriculum for Excellence.

To support this, practitioners also draw on Realising the Ambition: Being Me, Scotland’s national practice guidance for early years. This guidance builds upon the principles of Pre-Birth to Three and Building the Ambition, and places a strong emphasis on:

  • Spaces: Creating enabling environments that support exploration and learning.
  • Experiences: Offering meaningful, play-based learning opportunities.
  • Interactions: Building nurturing relationships that support emotional and cognitive development.

Realising the Ambition encourages a responsive, child-led pedagogy, recognising each child’s unique developmental journey. It supports continuity in learning across transitions and promotes high-quality practice that aligns with the Curriculum for Excellence.
