We will build on previous learning to create our own Super Stories, linking closely to our class topic. Pupils will continue to develop their use of figurative language, connectives, varied sentence starters and paragraph structure to engage readers and produce work they can feel proud of.

Pupils will develop characters, settings and plot lines in their own imaginative way and learn how to combine these so their story flows in a logical order making sense to the reader.

Midway through the term, we will introduce a ‘Writer’s Chair’, where pupils can choose to share their work with the class. Following this, peers will provide feedback using two stars and a wish to celebrate strengths and suggest improvements.

We will also take part in a range of literacy-based Wonka Challenges to further deepen and apply the literacy skills developed in Primary 3.

SPELLING & PHONICS:

Children will continue to practise spelling patterns through group activities. Spelling words will be included with homework each week for them to practise at home using a choice of different writing activities. A Friday morning spelling test will encourage pupils to improve their scores as the term progresses.

Pupils have the choice to further their spelling practice by carrying out tasks on Doorway Speller 2 at home and during ICT slots.

READING:

To link with our topic and inspire imaginative writing (our super stories) we will read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and enter a world of imagination and use this as a stimulus for lots of our literacy tasks this term.

Pupils will continue to take a reading book home once a week supplementing reading practice in class. We shall continue to progress through the Story World books focussing on reading with more expression to bring the stories to life. Pupils will have a weekly Friday word wall spot check and are encouraged to practice these at home. They shall also practice word walls each week during reading carousels.

Pupils will be invited to be P1 reading buddies and will have the opportunity to go to our younger year classes to help pupils with their reading and letter recognition, giving our pupils a sense of responsibility and boost confidence by helping others.

We shall also enjoy bi-weekly visits to the library where children can choose a book of their choice to read during independent reading slots throughout the week.

LISTENING & TALKING:

Listening and talking skills will be practiced daily in all areas of the curriculum. Pupils will be given the chance to work as part of a team developing key employability skills including communication, teamwork and problem solving.

Talking and listening skills will be developed throughout our topic; pupils will have the chance to work as part of a team designing and creating their own sporting activities and leading them to the class. They shall also complete two comprehension tasks each week and can think of their own comprehension questions to quiz the class with.

Whilst completing our Wonka Challenges linked to our class novel, pupils will have to listen out for clues and work as a team to solve the problem. This will help promote listening, communication and teamwork skills.

NUMERACY AND MATHEMATICS

NUMERACY:

Children will continue to build on their understanding of the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division), growing in confidence when tackling word-based problems and working with larger numbers.

Pupils will also be learning about fractions, linking this to their understanding of division. They will practise splitting items into equal parts and begin to order fractions by size.

We will also explore equations, comparing numbers that are greater than, less than or equal to, and extend this learning through more challenging word-based problems.

Children’s learning will be through practical resources, whiteboard recording and games, as well as written textbook work to consolidate their knowledge and understanding. ‘Sumdog’ challenges and games on websites such as ‘TopMarks’ can be used in school or at home to help the children’s mental maths strategies.

Pupils will take part in bi-weekly Sumdog challenges and will be encouraged to practice numeracy skills on Sumdog at home bi-weekly as an optional homework activity.

.

MATHEMATICS:

Maths skills will be developed through links with our topic.

Data handling:

Children will learn how to read and record information using a variety of methods including tally charts, bar graphs and Ven diagrams. Pupils will have an opportunity to carry out their own investigations gathering data and presenting it in their preferred way. We shall use a tally chart to keep track of our McLean Marathon challenge.

Fractions:

The children will extend their multiplication and division skills from last term to learn about fractions. Through practical activities we will investigate how an item or several items can be shared equally and learn to record simple fractions and describe them using the appropriate mathematical vocabulary. We will extend this to practise placing fractions on a number line to compare their size and begin to develop an understanding of fractions which are equivalent.

Time:

Children will learn to tell the time using both analogue and digital clocks. They will practise reading o’clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to on both formats. We shall also make the connection with fractions and time on analogue clocks.

Teacher – Mrs Morrison McLean Primary School Term 4 – Learning Overview for Primary 3A LITERACY WRITING: This term, our focus will be on writing imaginative stories.
