{"id":663,"date":"2023-03-01T16:00:27","date_gmt":"2023-03-01T16:00:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/fi\/lochellywestps\/?page_id=663"},"modified":"2024-08-30T23:11:24","modified_gmt":"2024-08-30T22:11:24","slug":"literacy-and-english","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/fi\/lochellywestps\/our-school\/our-curriculum\/literacy-and-english\/","title":{"rendered":"Literacy and English"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1><strong><u>What is Literacy? <\/u><\/strong><\/h1>\n<p><em>Literacy is the ability to read, write, speak and listen in a way that lets us communicate effectively and make sense of the world around us.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Our aim is to equip all learners with the fundamental literacy skills needed to effectively communicate with others and make sense of and contribute positively to the world. Workshop for Literacy is Fife\u2019s approach to supporting the development of skills for reading, writing and communicating effectively with others in a range of contexts now and in the future.<\/p>\n<h3><strong><em><u>Reading <\/u><\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Within reading, we focus on blending\/decoding to read unfamiliar words, fluency (ability to read with speed, accuracy and expression) and comprehension (to break a text down and understand what you have read.) We use a range of texts to support reading across all levels, including Oxford Reading Tree, Treetops and a variety of novels. Children are encouraged to develop and extend their writing through mark making activities, phonics and spelling, letter formation and handwriting, daily write opportunities, extended writing and writing for enjoyment. Sentence structure and grammar are explored and developed through the use of modelling, extended writing pieces and textbooks.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-668\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/fi\/public\/lochellywestps\/uploads\/sites\/12853\/2023\/03\/01155251\/abc-300x150.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"224\" height=\"112\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/fi\/public\/lochellywestps\/uploads\/sites\/12853\/2023\/03\/01155251\/abc-300x150.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/fi\/public\/lochellywestps\/uploads\/sites\/12853\/2023\/03\/01155251\/abc.png 508w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 224px) 100vw, 224px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><u>Listening and Talking <\/u><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One of our main aims is to help our children become effective contributors, communication is therefore a priority. Children are encouraged to talk and communicate in a variety of situations \u2013 with partners while discussing a piece of work or to convey instructions in team work. Children are also encouraged to talk about their learning, their next steps and their achievements.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em>Click <a href=\"http:\/\/dspl7.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Typical-talk-at-primary-1.pdf\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">HERE<\/span><\/a> to access a poster on typical language development, with examples of what you might see and hear in a classroom or school environment.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Examples of easy games and activities that support literacy development: <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Write write write \u2013 create a story, write a set of instructions, write a recipe for a family favourite dinner, use chalk to write words\/letters outside etc.<\/li>\n<li>See who can find as many rhyming words as possible, starting from a given word. Children could also write poems or songs with rhyme.<\/li>\n<li>Play eye-spy with the print around you \u2013 \u2018\u2019I spy a street name that has an \u2018r\u2019 in it\u2026\u2019\u2019<\/li>\n<li>Listening games \u2013 \u2018\u2019I went to the shops and bought\u2026\u2019\u2019 provide a list of items for your child to repeat back to you.<\/li>\n<li>Leave notes for your child and ask them to write you a reply.<\/li>\n<li>Play active spelling games \u2013 e.g. spelling tennis or bounce ball.
