A <\/span><a style=\"font-size: 16px;font-weight: 400\" title=\"Refreshed Narrative\" href=\"https:\/\/scotlandscurriculum.scot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">refreshed narrative on Scotland&#8217;s curriculum<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 16px;font-weight: 400\">, which sets CfE within the current context, was published in September 2019.\u00a0<\/span><\/h1>\n<div class=\"rich-text\">\n<h2>Scotland&#8217;s approach<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/education.gov.scot\/media\/u2lgmyum\/4capacities.jpg?rmode=max&amp;width=288&amp;height=258\" alt=\"four circles showing the four capacities: successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens and effective contributors\" width=\"288\" height=\"258\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Curriculum for Excellence places learners at the heart of education. At its centre are four fundamental capacities. These capacities reflect and recognise the lifelong nature of education and learning. The four capacities are aimed at helping children and young people to become:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Successful learners<\/li>\n<li>Confident individuals<\/li>\n<li>Responsible citizens<\/li>\n<li>Effective contributors<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What matters?<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/education.gov.scot\/media\/o2ud5rci\/4contexts.jpg?rmode=max&amp;width=325&amp;height=214\" alt=\"Four contexts diagram\" width=\"325\" height=\"214\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As part of their learner journey, all children and young people in Scotland are entitled to experience a coherent curriculum from 3 to 18, in order that they have opportunities to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to adapt, think critically and flourish in today\u2019s world.<\/p>\n<p>Curriculum is defined as the totality of all that is planned for children and young people from early learning and childcare, through school and beyond. That totality can be planned for and experienced by learners across :<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Curriculum areas and subjects<\/li>\n<li>Interdisciplinary learning<\/li>\n<li>Ethos and life of the school<\/li>\n<li>Opportunities for personal achievement<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Key elements<\/h2>\n<h3>Curriculum levels<\/h3>\n<p>The broad general education has five levels (early, first, second, third and fourth). The senior phase is designed to build on the experiences and outcomes of the broad general education, and to allow young people to take qualifications and courses that suit their abilities and interests.<\/p>\n<h3>Curriculum areas<\/h3>\n<p>There are eight curriculum areas:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Expressive arts<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/fi\/limekilnspsweb\/our-school-2\/curriculum\/health-wellbeing\/\">Health and wellbeing<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Languages (including English, G\u00e0idhlig, Gaelic (Learners), modern languages and classical languages)<\/li>\n<li>Mathematics<\/li>\n<li>Religious and moral education (including Religious and moral education and Religious education in Roman Catholic schools)<\/li>\n<li>Sciences<\/li>\n<li>Social studies<\/li>\n<li>Technologies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Literacy, numeracy and health and wellbeing are recognised as being particularly important \u2013 these areas are seen as being the \u2018responsibility of all\u2019 staff.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Scotland\u2019s curriculum \u2013 Curriculum for Excellence (CfE) \u2013 helps our children and young people gain the knowledge, skills and attributes needed for life in the 21st century.
