Around 37,000 children and young people in Scottish schools have ADHD.<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"878j9\" data-offset-key=\"e3jb4-0-0\">\n<p class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"e3jb4-0-0\">Although each individual is unique, there are three groups of symptoms common to ADHD. These include:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"b7qfu-0-0\">challenges with concentration and attention<\/li>\n<li class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"b7qfu-0-0\">impulsiveness<\/li>\n<li class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"b7qfu-0-0\">hyperactivity<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"14p4d-0-0\">Some individuals experience challenges with attention and concentration, but not hyperactivity or impulsiveness. This form of ADHD is sometimes called Attention Deficit Disorder or ADD. ADD can sometimes go unnoticed because the symptoms may be less obvious.<\/p>\n<p class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"14p4d-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"3g3bt-0-0\">ADHD can co-occur with other neurodevelopmental differences such as Autism, Dyslexia, Epilepsy or Tourette\u2019s Syndrome<\/span><span data-text=\"true\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>For many individuals, ADHD is linked to positive traits such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>creativity<\/li>\n<li>flexibility<\/li>\n<li>enthusiasm and spontaneity<\/li>\n<li>energy and drive<\/li>\n<li>compassion<\/li>\n<li>risk taking, which can lead to important discoveries<\/li>\n<li>an ability to process information and make broader observation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You might notice that children and young people with ADHD:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>have a short attention span<\/li>\n<li>find it hard to concentrate and are easily distracted<\/li>\n<li>may make mistakes<\/li>\n<li>appear forgetful, or tend to lose things<\/li>\n<li>have difficulty organising tasks or possessions<\/li>\n<li>find it difficult to stick at tedious or time-consuming tasks<\/li>\n<li>find it hard to wait for their turn<\/li>\n<li>appear to be unable to listen to or carry out instructions<\/li>\n<li>constantly move or fidget<\/li>\n<li>talk excessively<\/li>\n<li>have a tendency to interrupt<\/li>\n<li>are impulsive or act without thinking<\/li>\n<li>have little or no sense of danger<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What Support Might Look Like<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"e9609-0-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">an awareness of environmental factors which may impact a child&#8217;s participation<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"40idm-0-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">recognise and celebrate their strengths<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"5p0ef-0-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">understand the potential impact to their self-esteem when things go wrong<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"8vo3i-0-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">ensure that instructions are clear and straightforward<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"8d2bv-0-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">be consistent with routines to provide predictability<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"8hrc6-0-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">allow ample time and warning when transitioning to a new activity<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"5s5og-0-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">use visual timetables and checklists to help with personal organisation and build independence<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"8o566-0-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">set achievable goals<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"38tcg-0-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">break tasks down into manageable sections<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"fs57j-0-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">plan seating to minimise potential distractions<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"buju1-0-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">allow movement or sensory breaks throughout the day<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-offset-key=\"buju1-0-0\">use fidget toys where appropriate<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Resources<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The University of Edinburgh has created\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ed.ac.uk\/clinical-brain-sciences\/research\/epic-edinburgh-psychoeducation-intervention\/epic-resources\">EPIC resources<\/a>. These are free guides for parents, carers, and education practitioners. They contain practical strategies and approaches to supporting children and young people with ADHD, Autism and Developmental Co-ordination Disorder (DCD).<\/p>\n<p>The Open University offers a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.edu\/openlearn\/health-sports-psychology\/understanding-adhd\/content-section-0?active-tab=description-tab\">free introductory course on Understanding ADHD<\/a>\u00a0and NHS Inform provides\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhsinform.scot\/illnesses-and-conditions\/mental-health\/attention-deficit-hyperactivity-disorder-adhd\">more information about ADHD diagnosis.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The ADHD Foundation UK has created a series of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.adhdfoundation.org.uk\/2022\/05\/30\/information-booklets\/\">information booklets including a teenager\u2019s guide to ADHD<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>At a more local level the Dundee and Angus ADHD support group primarily serves those in Dundee and Angus, however they do offer online courses and training that can include those living outwith these areas. Their website is also worth browsing as they signpost to many other useful resources.
