\"Enterprising<\/p>\n

On Thursday 24th September, Kirkcaldy High School sent two enthusiastic maths teams to the annual Enterprising Maths in Fife competition, being held this year at Madras College<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Our teams consisted of two S3 and two S4 pupils, and were accompanied by a helpful S6 student, who took on the role of one of the supervisors at the event.<\/p>\n

The day started with a Team Challenge, where we had to bring all our brains together to decide the best way to go about solving 8 different problems. We shared the problems between us according to skill sets, and double checked each others\u2019 working before we handed our answer sheet in after 40 minutes of hard work. Everyone said this round went really well!
\nNext was the speed round, where we had to work our way round the room and face different challenges. We had to think fast and trust our instincts on this one, as we only had 10 minutes at each station! There were varying degrees of success across this one, as some challenges were easier than others.<\/p>\n

\"Enterprising<\/p>\n

After a quick lunch, it was on to the cubes round. We had been practising making these during lunchtime sessions for the weeks leading up to the event. We had production lines on the go for maximum efficiency. One team managed to build a tower of 6 cubes, and the other team managed a tower of 7. Impressively, another school managed to build a tower 11 cubes tall.<\/p>\n

The last round was the relay race, where we had to split our teams in half and sit at opposite sides of the hall. We took it in turns to answer questions, then race across the hall to deliver the next question to the other half of our team. We found this round the hardest as there was a lot of timing pressures involved, along with some tricky maths.<\/p>\n

Throughout the day, the teachers and supervisors had been judging the posters we made for the poster competition, with the theme of Maths Matters. One of our posters was all about maths in music, and featured Freddie Mercury dancing round a car. Our other poster showed what the world would be like without maths. The supervisors said they loved the applied aspects of the maths and the poster won first place!<\/p>\n

The final scores were read out at the end of the day. We didn\u2019t place top four, meaning we didn\u2019t progress to the next round, but one team equalled our position from last year, and the other team placed 12th which we took as a success, as it was our highest ranking in recent years. We thank our teachers for allowing us time out of class to attend this excellent event, our S6 supervisor for giving up his time to accompany us, and the organisers of the event for making maths so enjoyable. We can\u2019t wait to do it all again next year!<\/p>\n
