Colleagues are working on tracking reports, and these conversations and learning logs are vital in ensuring that learners are aware of strengths, development needs and their initial levels, target and working grades. We are keen to support all learners to achieve their potential and would ask for families to discuss this with their young person now and following the reports. Over the next couple of weeks, we will also be focussing on in class attendance and may be in touch to discuss any concerns.

On Wednesday, we held our first fire drill of the new academic session. Colleagues and young people evacuated in an orderly way and managed to follow all policies as expected. Most learners remained calm and supportive throughout. Some young people let themselves down with some unsafe behaviour and we are in the process of following up on this.

On Thursday, I visited S3 classes with Mr Young period 1 and S4 with Mrs Hamilton period 2. As ever, it is great to visit learners in class and speak to them and teachers about their progress. We also did some uniform checks, and almost all our young people continue to support our uniform policy. We have emailed families where issues arose. Well done to everyone for their hard work and effort that was reported by class teachers.

A reminder that we are making changes to our Guidance and Support structure following the October break. Thank you for sharing your views. We will pull key themes from this together and share them with you in due course.

Our key principles around this change are:

To ensure optimal communication with families and key partners so that a school-based Team Around the Child exists for every young person

To provide consistency of support for young people and families

To allow Guidance and Support staff more to engage in more meaningful contact with young people across their caseloads, with renewed focus on attainment and attendance

Over recent weeks, we have been gathering the views of the school community about house names, with a view to either re-instating an old house name for the fourth house or changing the names based on the feedback.

I will share with you more in-depth feedback, however, we had 76 parent / carer responses with 81% supportive of maintaining the current traditional names and adding an old house. Around 25 staff completed the survey with 85% feeling that a change would be best as not all current house names have relevance for young people. 456 young people responded to the survey, with only 6% feeling that the current house names should remain.

Based on the feedback, we are seeking to explore potential changes and would be keen to hear your thoughts. If you want to share your views on the next steps, please complete the short survey sent on “GroupCall”.

Next week, I will share our updated School Improvement Plan (SIP), Standards and Quality Report (SQR) and our proposed Pupil Equity Fund plan and seek your views prior to submission to our Education Manager.

The week ahead…

Please find a flyer for the annual Friends of Kirkcaldy High School (FoKHS) Race Night that takes place on Friday 6th November 2026.
