It has been great to have almost a full school back with the return of the new S5/6 on Tuesday.

On Tuesday, young people in S5 returned to school and had a morning of induction into their S5 including hearing from their year head. They then worked with Guidance teachers developing team building and other skills as well as some admin for the year.

Learners in S2, S3 and S4 had year assemblies with a focus on the ‘Ladder of Ambition’. This ladder was designed by our Learning Ambassadors and seeks to help develop what ambition is in the context of learning and how we can use this to support further development of this key school value. Our Learning Ambassadors spoke to each of the year groups sharing what each rung of the ladder symbolises with some videos from famous faces explaining what ambition means to them. Lastly, the Learning Ambassadors designed an actual ladder of ambition which was on display for each year to see. Amazing work from our Learning ambassadors and Mrs Duckett!

Over the course of the week, our Business and Computing faculty have been going through their paces with a self-evaluation review and visit. I had the privilege of being invited into 2 classes and I was really impressed by our learners and the learning taking place. Many thanks to the faculty for inviting me in to see their continued improvement journey.

Today, I managed to pop in and out of several classes, speaking to learners and teachers and seeing a huge range of fantastic learning experiences taking place. I was particularly keen to check how our new Mobile Phone policy was working. All staff have shared that learners have been more engaged in learning because of the change which is hugely positive. Almost all report that our learners have adapted well to the policy too. Thank you to all for the positive welcome and discussion.

This week, we also had a group of young people head to London on a school trip. A great time was had by all as they mixed some serious politics and debate at parliament with our constituency MP Melaine Ward with the sights and a show! A massive thank you to everyone who attended and supported. Thank you to Mr Sanderson and the team of staff who organised and supported the trip.

Finally, today I had the opportunity to hear from our amazing ‘Haggis Hoppers’ group who performed a few songs, jigs and reels. They were outstanding and a must see if you can. Some details about their next performance as follows:

Our pupil ceilidh band, The Haggis Hoppers, are delighted to be performing at the Victoria Hospital next Tuesday afternoon!

They’ll be sharing a lively programme of traditional Scottish music, including jigs, reels, waltzes and songs.

The group have been working incredibly hard rehearsing every Friday after school and putting in lots of extra practice – all in preparation for bringing the joy of live Scottish music to the local community.

We are so proud of their commitment and enthusiasm!

If you want to read more about what is happening here at KHS, please follow our blog.

Last week, I forgot to share with you some that a group of our learners from the Secondary Enhanced Provision and our 2AA class had the first of three Karate sessions, supported by JKS Karate here in KHS. All of those involved had a great time and really enjoyed. Some would say it was knockout! Well done to all and great to hear.

Lastly, it has been brought to my attention that some young people are crossing through the staff car park at the end of the day. This area is out of bounds to young people, and I would ask for your support in raising this with your child(ren). Moreover, I would ask that families do not park there to pick up their child(ren). Thank you, in advance, for your support with this.

The week ahead…

On Monday, I will share our draft School Improvement Plan (SIP) for consultation with all families. I would appreciate your feedback around this. Our SIP is closely based around our next steps following the HMIE Inspection in November and summarised inspection findings published in February.

On Wednesday, we look forward to welcoming families of our future S1. Families will get the opportunity to hear briefly from Mrs Gibb and I before spending some time with their child(ren)s Guidance teacher to hear about all the need to knows prior to the transition visits and starting in August. There will be an opportunity to ask questions.

I hope you have a great weekend when it comes.

Best wishes,

Chris McKay

Headteacher

05 June 2026

Dear Parent / Carer, Welcome to our weekly family and community communication that provides a Headteacher overview of the weeks events and other school-based events and information.
