I hope you and your family are doing well!

The week that’s been…

It has been a very sunny and warm week here at KHS and I have to say this always seems to be the experience when we have our young people sitting SQA examinations!

This week, learning continued for learners across our BGE in S1-3. On Monday, and again yesterday, I managed to get around most classes across the school and check in with our learners and teachers. I am always impressed by the calm and purposeful atmosphere in and out of our classrooms. As ever, it was great to hear first and hand and see what our young people are learning in class. Well done to all for their engagement and communication.

SQA examinations continued this week too, with a number of examinations taking place – from Graph Comm to Chemistry yesterday and much more between. Our young people are holding up well and taking the examinations in their stride. For any young person that needs support, we are here and happy to help.

Within school, we have been working hard continuing work on this year’s school improvement priorities and starting to think about next session. We are developing a new learning standard that we hope will support continued improvement in learning and teaching. Work continues around our vision, values and aims and we will be launching an updated Positive Relationship policy over the coming weeks.

We are keen to hear from you and we will send out a survey next week for you to complete and feedback where you feel we are and what we can do to further improve.

As always, you can read more about all the goings on in our blog.

A wee update from Ms Black and our Supported Learning department:

A wee bit of a change of routine in our senior phase this week; with many S4-6 learners on Study leave our Seniors commenced meaningful learning programmes that they planned with staff, to undertake between qualification completion and timetable change.  In SLD3 this includes looking at promoting Wellbeing and fitness, research projects to solve some excellent questions we have around Dinosaurs and Outdoor Learning (which was planned well before this period of excellent weather!).  They have also been reading Light on Dumyat and will be undertaking some work around it.  In SLD4/5 are working towards an Environmental qualification and this week looking at alternatives and solutions to Plastics, learning about abstract art and Picasso and exploring our hobbies including some very creative modelling.

SLD2 have been discussing Forces with Mr Stewart and firing rockets they have designed impressively high and accurately into the sky.  The discussions and investigations into what worked well and how we could improve them was thorough and brilliant language and understanding was demonstrated.  Mrs Logan’s SLD2/3 undertook learning and investigations around density by creating rafts and testing them out.  Very curious raft builders and again, a great understanding of scientific enquiry and language.

Out of school, learners from across the year groups took part in the DSF Boccia festival at the Michael Woods centre.  We are super proud of the way you represented the school and your skills.  Thank you to Miss Thomson for organising this.  Photos for the week can be found on our social media.

House Point totals for the week and session so far are as below:

This weeks total:
Adam Smith – 86
Carlyle – 42
Oswald – 30

Overall total:
Adam Smith – 3130
Carlyle – 3353
Oswald – 3480

Well done to all!

The week ahead…

Next week we have SQA examinations continuing for learners in S4-6, with the biggest numbers expected for National 5 English on Tuesday to begin the week.

We have a staff collegiate afternoon next Friday afternoon based around learning, teaching and assessment with all the local Kirkcaldy High Schools involved.

Another reminder that the next PACK meeting will take place on 13th May and not 5th May as outlined in the End of Term letter.

Lastly, school is closed on Monday 5th May for the May bank holiday.
