Not only that, but he wore our school tie whilst stealing the show with his anecdotes and patter. It’s fair to say we were all captivated by his visit … and that Sir Ian must have enjoyed his time here to go to the trouble of paying tribute. It was all in a good cause of course; addressing homophobia and prejudice against lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans-gender people. His message was very warmly received by our young people.

On Monday we had a special S1 Assembly with a focus on internet safety and “grooming” and also our Modern Studies trip to Edinburgh to take part in a debate organised by the European Parliament – it was held at the Eric Liddle Centre. Then on Tuesday we had a “Speedy Stem” event in our hall when S3 got the chance to meet engineers and scientists to find out more about their work. Many thanks to the “STEM Ambassadors” from industries across the East of Scotland who supported this.

Wednesday saw our participation in the Fife Schools basketball tournament. We also put on a Science trip to Heriot-Watt University for the “Dragonfly Headstart” event. Then, at lunchtime there was a talk for S6 on student finance, which had a great turnout. We had representatives from the Student Awards Agency for Scotland (SAAS) and in the evening it was our S2 Parent/Carer evening. This will help the course choice process which is now underway. Mr Young sent a separate email with our choice booklet and form which should be returned by March 10. Paper forms were also issued to young people earlier this week.

Mrs Meek and Miss Young took a group of Modern Studies pupils to the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh yesterday and last night our Drama students put on a performance of “Three” in the school. This was a great success and was well received by the audience. It’s a play about relationships and is supported by the National Theatre of Scotland. Our kids take their work to the Lyceum Theatre in Edinburgh on Wednesday 22 March. Tickets are available from the school and we have another performance next Wednesday.

Tomorrow’s Saturday School is English … I would urge our young people to get along to boost their SQA grade come May.

Next week is busy again … highlights include our musicians putting on a concert at Chapel Level Care home on Monday afternoon, and House Assemblies (Tues – Thurs) to celebrate British Science Week. Also at the assemblies, Ms Mahr of the RME Department will explain the humanitarian work she is undertaking in Africa over the Easter holidays. Before her visit to Rwanda, she will be asking for contributions of stationery items to help a street kids education project in Kigali, the capital city. On Tuesday, we also have a trip to Glenrothes for those interested in a Modern Apprenticeship in the Army, as well as a careers talk from Scottish Water for our engineering students.

As I think I mentioned before, on Tuesday evening, we are hosting the AGM of Kirkcaldy Foodbank and I am honoured to have been asked to be the guest speaker. I’m also asking some of our pupils to be part of it too … they have been very active in organising collections. Liam Lindsay (S6) will talk about the collections we have made and Mrs Nelson and her personal Development pupils are laying on refreshments. The meeting starts at 7pm, please come along if you are interested in the work of the Foodbank.

On Wednesday we are hosting a group of 50 young people and staff from Vannes School in Brittany and they will also be in school on the Friday. Mrs Morris (Head of Languages) has organised a programme for our French visitors. We’ve also got a “Go4SET” visit to Brand-Rex in Glenrothes as part of the national STEM competition, a “First Chances” meeting with St Andrews University after school and in the evening our Drama pupils are once again performing “Three”.

The week ends with our annual fund raising Ceilidh, organised by “Friends of Kirkcaldy High School” and our own Mrs Davidson. Thanks to all who have bought tickets or donated raffle prizes. It’ll be a great night with the Bert Pozzi Band and we hope to raise another £3000 or so to support our work. A good proportion of the proceeds from previous ceilidhs has gone to help young people affected by poverty to enjoy the range of trips and experiences we offer. We are indebted to FoKHS and lucky to have such a proactive group of supporters.

Next week’s hot dish menu is; Monday: Spaghetti Bolognese with garlic bread. Tuesday: Roast beef with Yorkshire pudding and mash. Wednesday: Macaroni cheese with chips or garlic bread, Thursday: Steak pie and potatoes. Friday: Fish and chips. We also have our pasta, sandwich, soup and salad options too. Do remember that a cup of home-made soup is available free to all young people at lunchtime.

Looking ahead, please come along to KHS at 7pm on Tuesday 14 March for a special event. We are having a focus on Teenage Drugs and Alcohol Issues. Representatives from the school, support agencies and the Police will share information on drugs, alcohol and so called “legal highs” – especially in the context of the local Kirkcaldy “scene”. It should be a great opportunity to learn more about these issues and give us a better understanding. Please respond to this email if you are able to come along. Full details are in the attached letter from Derek Dunsire, Chair of the Parent Council.

As ever, please be in touch if you require assistance.

With fond regards

Derek Allan

RECTOR

3 March 2017

Dear Parent/Carer I hope that you are well and have had a good week.
