This week we had a special assembly for S2 on Monday afternoon, with a talk from the Teenage Cancer Trust. Many thanks to Jayne Easson, who shared a very important message. Before the talk, our Interact Club (supported by the Rotary Club of Kirkcaldy) presented Jayne with a cheque for £130. This was raised from a bake sale held on the recent staff training day.

In the evening we hosted the annual Rotary “Hi 5” games night and our Interact Club was involved again, taking on teams from the Rotary and from St Andrew’s High School Interact. We had dominoes, snakes and ladders, Jenga, draughts, Connect 4 and indoor golf. As always, it was a great fun event with a competitive edge. I am delighted to say that team KHS won the event and teddy bears were presented as prizes

On Tuesday, Mrs Davidson and Miss Nessel attended a big event at Fife College with a group of 45 S4 pupils. It was all about Foundation Apprenticeships, a qualification which we support and promote. We currently deliver the Software Development FA and have senior students attending other schools to be part of the scheme in Engineering and Children and Young People. Next session this range is likely to be extended. The event at the College was excellent and we see an expanded programme of FAs as a real boost for vocational learning.

Also that afternoon, we hosted the “Big Brain Box” outreach team from St Andrews University in school working with science classes. This was also a big hit with learners. In the evening it was our S5/6 Parent/Carer Evening, and we also had “Bright Red Publishing” on hand offering SQA revision guides and past exam papers at Higher for sale.

On Wednesday afternoon, we had staff from the Dundee Science Centre in delivering fun Christmas lectures in the Hall. There were explosions and surprises galore.

Last night we held our first ever S5/6 Christmas Ceilidh in school, and included a live ceilidh band. Many thanks to Miss Malcolm, who was our chief organiser. What an excellent way to get the seasonal spirit … Scottish country dancing seems to have become very popular once again.

This Saturday and Sunday, we have a large group of pupils away at Huddersfield Town and Manchester United for a Premier League football weekend. Many thanks to Mr I’Anson and the other staff involved in this excursion. I’m sure the trip will be a great experience.

Next week, our Fourth Year Tracking Report will be posted home on the Monday. We also have yeargroup assemblies with Christmas themed musical entertainments laid on by Music Department pupils. On Tuesday afternoon, a group of Senior Chemistry students will be attending the annual Christmas lecture at St Andrews University.

On the Wednesday, Miss Young is taking the Advanced Higher Modern Studies class on a visit to Cornton Vale Prison, Stirling. Also, our Health and Food Technology students are laying on a lunch for staff. I’m sure that it will be well appreciated. The class is taken by Miss Mitchell, who is Principal Teacher of Health and Wellbeing. Unfortunately, from a school point of view, we are about to lose Miss Mitchell as she is heading west to take up a post as Head of Department at Marr College in Troon. Many thanks and best wishes to her … she has been a great asset to KHS and will be missed by her pupils and her many friends here.

After school on Wednesday, the Drama Department is laying on a special performance of “Much Ado About Nothing” in school. Tickets are available from cast members. This was the production which was such a big hit at the recent Shakespeare School Festival at the Byre Theatre in St Andrews.

Thursday’s main event is our annual Christmas Variety Concert, which takes place at 7pm, with mulled wine and mince pies from 6.30pm. This year, as well as music, we have drama and dance performances. I am really looking forward to it. All the performers have been given a pair of tickets and extra tickets are only £1 from the office.

On the Friday, all S1 will attend the panto at the Adam Smith. This year it’s “Aladdin”. Many thanks to the English teachers involved. It’s also a fund raising occasion that day. We are asking for donations for “Save the Children” and giving the opportunity to wear a Christmas jumper or any type of Christmas themed clothing. Many thanks in advance.

The menu next week is;

Monday: Lentil soup, Butter Chicken Tikka Masala and Rice, vegetables

Tuesday: Mushroom soup, Grilled Sausage/burger – veggie/beef/chicken, chips, baked beans

Wednesday: Scotch broth, Roast chicken and gravy, potatoes and vegetables

Thursday: Xmas Lunch: Haggis balls & sweet chilli sauce, Roast turkey & trimmings or Steak pie, Trifle or Xmas Pudding

Friday Yellow split pea soup, Breaded fish/Sausage roll, chips, peas

We also have baked potatoes, pizza, pasta, sandwiches and salad available every day as well as our new outdoor snack bar.
