First Day in Rwanda – Kieron’s Thoughts

Blog post 1 from Kieron in s6!

The beginning of our journey in Rwanda, started off with an early 6am rise where we were enticed to a breakfast buffet contianing; Fruits, Eggs and toast. Many of us still tired from a days worth of flying headed off in a coach to Batsinda, street kids project house where today is something known as Umuganda where the last saturday of every month the community gather to help clean and fix up the area. We began this Umuganda by splitting off into teams of cooks, water gatherers and game makers to help entertain and provide service to this group.

As it dawned into the afternoon we had a more relaxing time where it was noticed that there were arm wrestling, board games, marbles, story telling and dancing were all being participated in, we then gathered everyone to teach our Scottish Country Dancing which was powered through even though for some it was out of their comfort zone.

In conclusion to this day spent at the Street kids project I feel this was a very heartfelt and life changing experience, the whole process of getting to know these kids stories and building the relationships with them was a very eye opening time to how some of these kids have coped throughout their young lives even though the circumstances in which they are born into wasn’t in their favour whatsoever.
