In the process of becoming confident readers, writers, listeners and talkers, our students are also guided towards developing life-skills such as problem solving, responding to complex ideas, critical thinking and empathy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #b00434\"><strong>Some of the skills students will develop are:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333232\">Showing an understanding of the main purpose and intended audience of a text they watch, read or listen to, including identifying and paraphrasing key ideas<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333232\">Making and organising notes to develop thinking, retain and recall information<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333232\">Using suitable vocabulary to communicate effectively with their intended audience through talking or writing activities<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333232\">Giving detailed, evaluative comments on the content and form of short and extended texts, and justifying own opinions with evidence<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333232\">Developing an awareness of bias and persuasion, with an ability to assess the reliability of information and credibility of different sources<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333232\">Enjoy creating a variety of texts of their own<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333232\">Developing accuracy in technical writing skills and growing specialist vocabulary<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333232\">The department also leads activities for a range of different calendar events throughout the year for students and the wider community.
