At KHS we engage learners in a variety of practical and non practical activities. Through practical cookery we:
- Learn about Hygiene and Safety in food preparation. It is massively important to follow all hygiene and safety rules to keep ourselves and others safe.
- Use a variety of vegetable prep skills including; Knife skills, grating, peeling, crushing, slicing.
- Use a variety of bakery skills including; weighing, measuring, kneading, creaming, mixing, folding, baking.
- Use lots of cookery methods; steaming, boiling, simmering, grilling, baking, shallow frying, stir-frying.
- Improve organisation skills to work on on time, under pressure and in a neat manner.
- Foster skills for learning; creativity, critical thinking, communication, collaboration, adaptability.
Through non-practical activities we focus on becoming responsible citizens and on our health and wellbeing. We learn topics such as:
- Foods of the world
- Sustainable food
- Food Safety
- Food Storage
- Nutrition
- Scottish Dietary Targets
- Design & Make
