Home Economics at Kirkcaldy High School

Welcome to the Home Economics Page. Home Economics is run by Principle Teacher Miss Collins. Miss Roberts, Mrs Murray and Mrs McMahon work alongside Miss Collins to deliver the best lessons!

At KHS we engage learners in a variety of practical and non practical activities. Through practical cookery we:

  • Learn about Hygiene and Safety in food preparation. It is massively important to follow all hygiene and safety rules to keep ourselves and others safe.
  • Use a variety of vegetable prep skills including; Knife skills, grating, peeling, crushing, slicing.
  • Use a variety of bakery skills including; weighing, measuring, kneading, creaming, mixing, folding, baking.
  • Use lots of cookery methods; steaming, boiling, simmering, grilling, baking, shallow frying, stir-frying.
  • Improve organisation skills to work on on time, under pressure and in a neat manner.
  • Foster skills for learning; creativity, critical thinking, communication, collaboration, adaptability.

Through non-practical activities we focus on becoming responsible citizens and on our health and wellbeing. We learn topics such as:

  • Foods of the world
  • Sustainable food
  • Food Safety
  • Food Storage
  • Nutrition
  • Scottish Dietary Targets
  • Design & Make
