Our Minds Matter

The emotional wellbeing of our young people matters.

It’s normal for young people to face emotional challenges growing up and their mental health is as important as their general physical health and wellbeing.

We recognise that everyone has a role to play in supporting young people to keep emotionally well and thinking about what might help when someone needs additional support with their mental health. We think it’s important to think about what we do in a flexible way, with different layers of support and action from different people and services.

You can find out more by clicking here.

There are five key ways of keeping emotionally well. Click here to find out more about some simple things we can all do to make a difference.

HandsOn

The HandsOn website (below) provides help and practical advice for supporting children and young people’s mental health and emotional wellbeing. This website is for parents, carers and people who work with children and young people in Fife.

Parents and Carers wishing to find out more about their child’s wellbeing can access information on alcohol, drugs and smoking on a number of information rich websites.

In particular,

  • ParentZone has a Health and Wellbeing section covering Alcohol, Bullying, Drugs, Sexual Relationships, Smoking and other issues
  • Childline covers a wide range of advice

To help support your child’s education there are websites offering Homework Help and ideas on how to foster Study Skills.

Secondary school pupils have extra links included in their own Pupils’ section and teachers will be adding more links within their own subject pages.

The school itself has a number of initiatives cover your child’s health and safety such as Promoting Positive Behaviour and Health Promoting schools so please look at the Initiatives section of the school’s site.

Solihull Approach – Improve Emotional Health and Wellbeing  Fife Council are delighted to announce that multi-user licence for three Solihull Approach online courses, will soon be made available for all parents, carers and parents-to-be.

The Solihull Approach aims to improve emotional health and wellbeing by supporting relationships and is designed to understand behaviours in a non-judgemental way and to develop the most appropriate responses. This supports the emotional health and well-being in children, families and adults (www.solihullapproachparenting.com). The courses are written by CAMHS professionals with other health and education workers and are evidence based.

The approach has been well established within Fife and has been used successfully within all our Fife Council ELC settings, our Educational Psychology Service, within midwife and Health Visitor teams and throughout CAMHS.

This approach will now be available online for every resident, free of charge and will be of particular benefit to our parents and carers.

These courses are for ALL parents-to-be, parents, grandparents or carers of any child from the antenatal period to age 18 years who want to be the best they can be. You don’t need to be struggling. This course is relevant to parents of all children, including those with additional support needs, autism, ADHD etc.

We know the current situation is placing a unique level of challenge for our families and we hope the materials will be particularly helpful at this time and beyond.

Together we are aiming to encourage and support parents‘ self-development and improve children’s wellbeing at the same time. A home life with strong and trusted relationships can improve concentration, learning and performance at school.

More information will follow which will provide details of how to access this programme.

Fife’s Educational Psychology Service (EPS)

provide assessment, consultation and advice to schools and parents about children’s wellbeing, learning and behaviour. We specialise on the children identified as having Additional Support Needs under normal circumstances but recognise that the current arrangements to respond to the threat of Coronavirus has led to children and families experiencing challenges that may not normally arise. In response to this pressure, Fife EPS are going to provide direct consultation to the public during this period of school closure where we have educational psychologists available to respond to your questions or queries. Click here for more information.
